MeatEater Volume 9 Ep1 SKY ISLAND SOLITAIRE: BACKPACK HUNTING COUES DEER IN ARIZONA
lamrith replied to desertotter's topic in The Campfire
Those that like that show and feel also check out Western Hunter. Similar feel. They hike in deep usually OTC tags so they go real deep multi night camps to get away from everyone, and leave the field empty handed sometimes just like the rest of us. -

Carrying Extra Rounds in the Field
lamrith replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I will be carrying plenty of ammo, not that more than 1 round should be needed but I will have at least 1-2 boxes in the truck when we leave the city. Probably most of them loaded up and ready to go too, but then again AR platform makes that easy... sounds like a story behind that one.. care to share? Do many of you rifle hunters also carry a sidearm? this is my 1st tip to AZ to hunt and I will be south of Tucson. Family I have that has hunted area said they not normally carry, but I am thinking the extra few # on my hip is just extra insurance...? -
^^ This thread has been the same as I have seen for many "Not big enough calibers" There are some out there that think nothing less than .30 is good for hunting, and even then 300wm is required. It is very common to see in regards to the 300blk, "It was designed as a subsonic round, it is not for hunting". Fact is today's bullets perform better than ever before. the 300blk as an example is so popular that some of the big bullet markers have develops are are releasing more and more bullets designed to fully open at subsonic speeds. If a arrow traveling a <280fps can pass thru an animal and kill it quickly, why do people think a bullet traveling 6=700fpds+ cannot? The most important parts are: KNOW your weapon and it's effective envelope. 300blk is not a round I would use on game @500yrds, even supersonic.. KNOW YOUR limitations. Just because you are shooting 300wm that can take a coues @ 700yrds, does not men YOU are capable of hitting a 10" target at that raneg EVERYTIME you pull the trigger with that weapon. That is where lighter recoiling calibers shine, no flinch for more trigegr time and better consistency..

Ya think maybe this guy has been robbed before???

Interesting trailer with axles so far apart, must be a pain to maneuver..? -
It is not certain they are doing a change, but the discussion on if they are going to make a change may come back up in Dec and then they could decide to change things. That said current Form1 turn around time right now is over 100days, and form 4 are well over 120 so time is running out fast.

Thanks!! I have never been good at the ole' cook by touch method, like to have a number in mind so not ruin things as I learn..

Yeah I have a meat therm I use for my smoker with brisket and pork shoulder. Just curious what my target temps would be, is it the same as beef? pull @ 125 for rare, 130 for Med Rare, etc?

lamrith replied to Desert Rat's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
No problem, I did it the other way, grendel, then 300 :-p. -
So what sort of temp is considered rare or medium rare with Coues? How are you guys judging a loin is medium rare without the cardinal sin of cutting it? Those pictures all look amazing and you made me hungry!

AR15 in 6.5 grendel. Or whatever legal bolt gun you have and a sidearm.

Congrats on second draws guys. And on all the new 6.5 shooters!

I had a stack of AR parts laying around. I will not deny it I am a cheap SOB, I only bought above base Milspec on a few items, def not a pinnacle build but it is working VERY well, best most fun shooting rifle in my safe. Check out 65grendel.com for the experts and LOTS of information... I do not have pricing on everything, but list what I know off top of head.. Basic cheapest I could find stripped lower Reciever ($50) Anderson Lower parts kit (would not buy again, get a DPMS or other cheap kit) Generic buffer assembly with 6 position adjustable stock ($25 ebay) B5 Sopmod buttstock stock to replace generic 6position. (Used $50) ALG Defense Combat trigger ($65) Hogue pistol grip ($25) Basic stripped upper and upper parts kit. Basic Milspec barrel nut Brownells 18" Barrel with matching bolt ($299) Troy Alpa rail 13" ($100 ebay) Killer Innovations muzzle brake .30cal ($50 local Company, not needed but looks cool) Primary Arms 4-14x44 ACSS FFP scope ($280)(added sunshade and butler creek covers AD-Recon 30mm 20MOA Scope mount ($149 if bought with scope) This is with the original Ergo F93 stock, great stock but heavy. I swapped it out for Sopmod and dropped .5# for a 9.5# total weight. .6MOA or better with Factory 123G AMAX ammo when I am not jerking the trigger like a spaz on the last shot. Join the Horde it is fun! -
Well If it is like this year in WA there might have been a spike in people. There is a tag "Multiseason deer" up here that normally anyone that applies gets. This year we were seeing a 50% not drawn rate on the local forums, a BIG change from previous years, of course the year I put in for it the 1st time... DOH

Deer rifle caliber for teen
lamrith replied to couesfreak23's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Yeah 6.5's are pretty sweet rounds. 6.5 Grendel as well as creedmore. Grendel will not have the velocity of creedmore so 500 be right about the max I would think for deer, though people have taken elk @400yrds with it. Nice thing about it is that it is a very very mellow recoil round, and with the 6.5 bullet high BC flies really far. In terms of target shootong guys regularly shoot them to 1k, and one guy shot 1760 a few weeks ago. It is now a Saami spec round also, Hornady makes some great factory ammo for target & hunting. It fits in std AR platform, so if you have a few of them you can get a barrel/bolt combo and some magazines and convert an existing AR. Saves $ and some of the young generation will stay more interested being an AR platform. Mine has a $300 18"barrel/bolt and shoots .6MOA all day long. GL and congrats for your son, great to see families passing on hunting! -

6.5 Grendel can reach out. Not think it best if you are looking for 500yrd+ shots on game all the time due to it's lower muzzle velocity. But 400-500yrds on deer would be ok, there are a number of great medium game bullets in the 100-129gr range thta perform very well. It has taken Elk @ 400yrds. the round itself is capable of reaching out a mile reliably and consistently due to it's high BC bullets Then there is also 6.5creedmore, or 6.5swede for that matter for higher velocities. Grendel I know is just a real nice mellow shooter, something you can shoot al day and not feal beat up. Leading to better familiarity with weapon and performance which leads to better shots on game. I built up an AR in 6.5grendel and IT shoots sub .6MOA as long as I am doing my part and that was with a budget barrel and factory 123G Amax ammo. Don't let the size and #'s fool you, the 6.5 bullet is a great performer even if the # on paper do not make it look like it is to some. Europeans been using it (6.5x55) for their big game for over a century. Funny you mention the 6.5 Grendel, as I recently picked up a stripped lower I am debating building either a 300blkout pistol or a 6.5 Grendel rifle out of as my next project gun. For this hunt, since I already have the 300wsm and 7mm-08 in the safe, I think I am looking to add either a 243, 25-06 or 257 Roberts to the mix. I think the 257 Roberts will be out of the running due to factory ammo availability. At one point I was looking at the 280 and 260, ammo availability ruled those out as well. I do have a single stage press that I use for handgun ammo, I have not ventured into reloading rifle ammo, but this close to a hunt, and with hopefully a new rifle, I would rather stick to factory ammo for now. Built my Grendel over the winter and then built a 300blk a month later!! Really like the grendel, just a great shooter, with plenty of reach for medium/big game at distances I feel comfortable shooting game at. Round is such that I can spend a day shooting long range building skillset without breaking my shoulder or the wallet.. It is what I will be bringing down for Oct hunt in 34A. -
True.. I was thinking bring some calls and see if I could stir up some Yotes too.. Problem there is that is noisey and I am concerned about messing up others hunts by calling and spooking deer every direction. Not that gunshots will not do the same I guess..

Yeah we are all pretty amazed and proud to hear he reached out that far with it. It is not ethical for game out to a mile by any means but there is at least one guy on the grendel forum on target at that range. The Grendel (and most 6.5) have phenominal ballistic coefficients, much better than the 30cal rounds everyone loves so much for long range shooting. Certainly 1 mile is the longest I have heard someone shooting it, but there are a number who run 800-1000 quite often. He was shooting a steel plate at that range so would not show keyholling as well as paper, but the hits look nice and round. http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showthread.php?10403-Found-the-Magic-Mile-Mark!&highlight=mile I just love it for the mellow recoil, past shoulder injuries have made my shoulder recoil sensitive lately and it is nice to have a big game gun that I am not flinching from after 5rounds. It is fantastic for kids and other people of smaller stature. -
Yeah my reading comprehension function was shutoff when I looked the 1st time... So how prevalent are kitties in 34A? Being out of state it is a bit more expensive tag the in state and a dollar amount I do not want to just throw away.
-
I will look again, I was skimming and looking for the specific unit to be listed, but will take time and ready fully tonight. I am all about predator control and my Grendel is ready for coues, coyote or kitty's, whatever shows it's boiler room to me.. Up here in WA we have isues with predators now, they changed lion regs and I think bear regs in last few years making it extremely difficult to hunt them and regulate the populatios. Plus they brought wolves back which are not huntable so running amok.. Decimating livestock and big game herds.. EDIT: Checked the PDF of regs..

Great info thanks Duckhunter! Cabellas is 30min away, sportsmans is on my way home and Camo fire is on my phone all day long :-p I will be out there all week sounds like family have hunted the unit before just not sure how much and I am not sure if they will get a chance to scout it preseason as they live in northern AZ and I am in WA.

I am not seeing a Lion tag available for 34A? Or am I mising it somehow? I will be hunting 34A in Oct, and would be nice to have a second tag in my pocket...
-
Congrats Duckhunter!! I ended up drawing the same hunt this year. Also my 1st hunt, best of luck and maybe we will run into each other! I too am shooting 6.5 but in Grendel form.
