Hey everyone, I have a young hunter (15 years old) that has a Unit 24 Archery White Tail tag for January that i'll be trying to help out. I understand that this can be a pretty difficult unit so was hoping some of yall may have some starting points for us. I sure appreciate any help anyone may have for this young man! Josh David

Well living in New Mexico doesn't have too many perks but one of them for sure has got to be OTC turkey tags. Funny though how turkeys seem to quiet down after the season starts. I had several groups of turkeys located before the season started but due to my wife's surgery and work I wasn't able to get out and hunt until yesterday. I picked a spot that had 4 or 5 toms that were hot and heavy, as I made my way up the canyon in the early twilight hours I could not believe that I hadn't heard a gobble. I figured maybe the area had been hunted and that caused the turkeys to quiet down. I was rounding a bend into a big meadow when I saw 4 toms running away from me I quickly gave them some calls on the diaphragm call but to no avail. I did however locate a roost tree that was being used heavily and I made plans to get back ASAP. This afternoon I made it back to the canyon and quickly made my way to the meadow adjacent to the roost tree. I knew that the birds weren't going to be talking so I laid my bet on the fact that the birds would be coming back to roost for the night. I quietly called every 5 minutes and kept my eyes peeled. About 30 minutes of keenly waiting I saw movement to my left. Two toms were entering the meadow about 80 yards away. I gave a few soft clucks and they started strutting and making a B-line in my direction. I had to slightly adjust to my left as they neared but was concealed quite well at the base of a juniper. At 30 yards I let the biggest tom have it with the trusty old Mossberg. Since you can get two tags here in NM I thought about nailing the other tom which didn't seem phased in the least that his buddy was flopping on the ground but decided to prolong the hunt for another day. My only regret is not having anyone to share the moment with, the last turkey i killed was 13 years ago with my Dad and I remember the hooping and hollering and high fives we had. I gave a couple whoops into the wilderness just for good measure and admired the beautiful bird. Now like i said it had been a while since i killed a turkey so a quick look on the internet and I was off to plucking. The plucking went with out a hitch, but the gutting my oh my. I didn't realize how stinky the things were on the inside. Then there was the jelly like consistency of the breast. Not sure what that's all about but maybe one of you can fill me in. I decided to cut it all out and stuck the bird in the freezer. Then I felt something on my neck, something like a bug...... WHAT THE HECK TURKEYS HAVE LICE??????? A quick call to my pops and he assured me that they are specific to things with feathers, but tell that to my scalp. Maybe i can get some reassurance from you turkey experts. Thanks for reading! JD

Is the pic working for everyone now?
-
Thanks the good lord! Where were you hunting azpackhorse?
-
Nice work there Fam! One thing though I believe there's a mercury warning on that lake, so I'd check with the G&F before feeding those little tykes!
-
The blade in the last pic is the same, it just looks like it lost the thin bars on the side and back while trying to remove it from the steel. That's my guess at least!
-
Well, glad ya got it fixed, it's a shame that this happens!

Hey Amanda, the front page was hacked by some douche bags, I hope they didn't do too much damage! If you're out there loser, perhaps you don't understand you're messing with a couple hundred well armed coueswhitetail.com FINATICS!

Need an antler fix?

Awesome Amanda, but you forgot this clip!!! LOL -
What unit is it in? I would contact the warden for that specific unit and really give the what for (nicely of course) and offer to meet him out there when the problem is occuring. Just my .02

Thanks for your support Mike, the whole reason we started the association was for people the likes of which frequent this board. Keep spreading the word! -

Amanda, and all forum users! If you have any questions regarding the Self Guided Hunting Association I'd be more than happy to answer them via private message, on the open forum, or by email josh@selfguidedhunting.org ..... A huge congrats to Jay on that Self Guided monster buck! Josh David -

I'll let you know what i see this weekend but previous trips into 23 and 24A have shown little to zero rutting activity. I've seen groups of does without bucks all season long.

Thanks for the help doug, what would the cost of the PF5ED and the camera adapter be? If you want to digiscope I really suggest an ED scope. Perhaps you would be better served with the Pentax PF65ED which we are offering @ $599.99. The Vortex is a great scope, but when it comes to digiscoping you are cheating yourself without ED glass.
-
Great job, is it me or has this been an acceptional year for archery pig?
-
How's the clarity of the spotting scopes and do they have a digital camera adapter. I'm looking for a lower priced digiscoping setup i know i get what i pay for but a starving fish biologist still wants to take pics of animals a LONG ways off.

Monday morning pops and I headed out to 24A for a try at his first pig since 1984. A buddy of mine had given us some info on an area that he and two other guys had taken their pigs, and he was pretty confident they'd be in the same area. It was one of those glorious days, cool temps with blue bird skies, dad and I were excited and had our eyes peeled as the sun began to rise. We ended up spotting several deer on the way down the highway and spirits were elevated as we unloaded the quad to head into "pig country". Our first stop was the ridge that my friend had told us about. There was plenty of pig sign as we slowly worked our way along the ridge with the wind in our face but alas no pigs were spotted. After glassing the surrounding areas and only turning up 3 white tail does we decided to head into some new country and cranked up the 4 wheeler to see what we would see. The very undertraveled road wound up and into the mountains and put us in an awesome glassing spot. I had been glassing about 5 minutes when my dad whistled at me. I went down to meet him and he says "I see a pig but it's all by himself". I thought that's sure wierd so i throw up the 15's and sure enough there's not just one pig but 8 and their moving. I tell dad that he better get over there before they get out of sight. Dad begins his stalk and i was truly amazed at what a little pig motivation can do to the legs of an aging man. Before i knew it he was 80 yards away from the piggies. He drops his pack and begins slowly approaching the peccaries one slow step at a time. Watching my dad through the binocs was one of the better times i can remember. When it looked like he was right on top of those pigs i see him slowly draw, take aim, and loose the arrow. Pigs exploded all around him, one actually running by him at less than 5 feet. The next words i heard on the radio are ones i wouldn't mind hearing again "well I got one stuck". He went through the motions of going back and getting his pack, giving the pig time to expire and looking for the blood trail. He had made an excellent shot and the pig expired in less than 30 yards. I was a very proud son to say the least! I ran over to help him gut the thing and carried the pig back to four wheeler for him. I figured it was the least i could do for his unrelenting support and for getting me out in the woods when i was just a young tyke! Thanks for sharing our hunt with us! Bob and Josh David post script -- This was my first attempt at documenting the hunt by photographing through the 15's so i apologize for the quality. Hopefully you'll get the idea though!

Congrats Troy! You did a heck of a job on that pig. Enjoy these times with your father, in the years to come you'll have great memories!

You're right on that desertbull, he shoots that bow like a pro! Although as much fun as we had on this hunt i think i have him hooked on bowhunting again, and the thoughts of a new or updated bow are in the works! Or at least some carbon arrows!

My dad and I were able to get down to 24A on saturday for a very memorable pig hunt. At about 11:30 I spotted 4 javelina feeding WAY across a large canyon. Dad stayed behind the binocs and I started my way across the canyon and was able to get above them. The stalk lasted about 2 hours (told ya it was a big canyon) and I was able to seal the deal on a nice 40 lb. boar! My dad and I were reminiscing and we realized that it had been almost 10 years since we've shared a successful big game hunt together. It was a hunt i'll always remember. Hopefully we can get pops in on a pig here in the next week or two. Some may be wondering why I didn't put the old man on the pigs, well he left his javelina tag sitting on the counter so by default the stalk was mine.
