Making baby gila monsters
crotalus replied to peckl1's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I'm not an expert, but i think what you may have are amazing photos of Gila Monster combat. Were they biting each other or making hissing noises? Typically they will attempt to dominate each other by some serious wrestling. Now on the other hand your last photo lookz mighty suspicious. Did you notice if their cloacal vents were bound while taking the last photo? Thanx for sharing because it is something hardly any of us will ever witness. Thanx again. -
wow! the cajones those peepz have> thatz no good at all. I will pray the promises of Ps. 91 for you and your family. man... unbelievable. Ernest

I'm sorry about your lost Ernesto; I just don't know why people can't just leave stuff alone that doesn't belong to them. May they get the justice they deserve.

HAVE U EVER HAD A CAM STOLEN
crotalus replied to FOGGER's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
WOW... that's too bad cause I really wanted to believe in the good of my fellow hunters. But thinking about it TAM, I guess you're right competition is fierce and some people just lack the moral fiber to just leave others stuff alone. But nothing surprises me now a days. Just makes me wanna MMA some dez fools! -
Super shots, sweet set up... I really love moon pix but they are major pain to set up. Can't wait to see what you all post when ya scouting for the really big one. Thanx for post'n.

HAVE U EVER HAD A CAM STOLEN
crotalus replied to FOGGER's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
This is friggin annoying!!! To hear all this going on is just a big pile of "stuff". I'm starting to think the "anti's" are responsible for most of these MIA's or sabbotage crap. I know competion for the sweet spots is fierce but I just cannot think with all the postings and recordings of the thieves/vandals that an ethical hunter would be doing this to another hunter. Call me naive but I really hope our fellow hunters are not responsible for this crap..... sorry for the rant. I want to get a game cam up but with all these reports I refuse to drop any change just to have it stolen. -
I was at Sportsman's the other day and noticed Hornady has some .270 Customs factory loads called "Light Mag" and "Heavy Mag" in the 130 to 140 gr. Are these okay to shoot outta my Rem .270 700ADL? Rifle is in great shape and no issues. I've been shooting Federal's Fusion and Remi's Scirocco Swifts; these are friggin awesome, but I've heard so much about Hornady Ammo that I'm jones'in to try it. My second questions in the poundage for trigger pull, is it better to take it to a gunsmith for adjustments once the decision to adjust is made? How much effect does this really have on your shooting? Thanx in advance for any info. Ernest

name that snake Part 4 ?
crotalus replied to AZ RANGER's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Yep, a Nightsnake. Agreed that to be found in the day is unusual but maybe lookin for some lovin. There are a couple of "rear fanged" snake in Az that are "venomous" this is one of them the others 1) Ring-necked snake, 2) the Black-headed Snakes 3) Sonoran Lyre Snake 4) Hog-nosed and 5) the Brown Vine snake. Supposedly some mild reactions to the venom if any and all considered "mildly venomous". I've heard of the hog-nosed causing some pretty descent swelling though. The Brown vine snake looks like a friggin Boomslang or Mamba when confronted. Thanx for the post -
Thanx a bunch for the replys. I'm a typical "do-it-yourselfer" so I'm worried 'bout screwing up the trigger. Might just take it in. On the ammo some good info, thanx Doug. I tend to shoot high and I read it was either my flinch or the trigger. With my .270 I'm pretty solid but with my ".30-06" it's a different story. My groups are good though. I'm think'n for my late Coues hunt I'll do the Scirocco's and my early cow hunt use a Hornady round, all shot out of the .270 of course. Thanx again, Ernest

Cowards Strike Again!!
crotalus replied to AZ402's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Thanx gents, looks like I better brush up on my self defense tactics... Either way I would be very tempted to put the smack down on a loser stealing friggin someone else's property. Only thing I ever stole in the mountains is a nap while glassing... -
Ever see a Rattle Snake being eaten.....
crotalus replied to scoutm's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
sorry Eagle Eye, I think you looked at the wrong clip. Perhaps the July 28th one with the "rock python" that is supposedly from Texas. Take a gander at the Jun 25th clip.... That rock python made me jump too, sort of like Amanda's black-tailed rattlesnake video. Ern -

crotalus replied to scoutm's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
KGAINES is right it's an Indigo Snake. They're found back east, so far as I know there are none in Az. The rattlesnake appears to be a D-back so I would say probably taken around mid to east Texas somewheres. These pix are makin the rounds, a neat slideshow can be found at the June 25,2008 post http://texanareview.typepad.com/posts/ Ernest -
+1 Scottyboy, thanx for the words. Makes more since to leave the snakes alone than bang everyone you see. Snake bites are nasty, no one will deny that. I've seen my share of envenomations, not one of them have been accidents. Guys usually trying to pick one up, etc. Then there's the true accidents, usually children, very sad no doubt. Bottom line, it's a wild alive desert out there be careful and leave the snakes alone it's probably more afraid of you than you are... besides Killing for the sake of killing is not healthy. And I really like those sheds as well. You shed hunters have all the luck, been hunting for 34 yrs and I've only found one shed. A tiny coues shed(a two point total length a whopping six inches) at that. Ernest

Nice atrox coueschaser3, good to see there are still some healthy snakes left out there. The pix of the fawn is great. Thanx for the post. Is that bear the same one causing the eclipse on pix two?

Went to the AzGFD sponsored "Bat Night" at Oracle State Park, July 11 2008. Had some great information on hand and a good lecture given by a wildlife biologist. Thought I post some pix because there is some really bad urban myths about bats out there and thus misinformation leads to a bum rap for the bats. They are very special critters, protected in Arizona (it's illegal to harm bats) but sometimes ignorance reigns. Fairy tales and concerns about rabies drives the bat fear, but you have a bette chance of getting struck by lighting than getting rabies from a bat. The bats are a Pallid Bat(the one with big ears) and a California Mytois. Although some Myotis are hard to tell from others so this may just get filed under "Myotis". Here's some cool links for bat info http://www.batcon.org/home/default.asp http://www.azgfd.gov/w_c/bat_conservation.shtml

Immpressive... What's the price of those gators? I couldn't find it. The only thing that bothers me is the lack of front coverage, but most snake gators don't have it either. The one frame of the snake hanging up on the tip of the boot nailed the vunerability of any snake gator for me. Either you'd better have a steel toed boot or some very seamless snake proof boots... the only reason a snake would get hung up is that its fang some how penetrated the boot or it got through the boot seam(did ya notice how quickly the "model" kicked the snake off). Both would make for a very bad day.
