    Going east for deer

I'm very interested in taking a vacation east of here to hopefully hunt some deer. What would be a good list of states that are cheap and have a good amount of deer. I don't want a trophy, strictly meat. Even if I take all does I will be very happy. Which brings me to another question, what states allow more than one doe.

    Going east for deer

Nebraska sounds good but I've been reading about it and they don't seem to have a whole lot of public land. I'm leaning heavily towards the northern part of Kentucky since I have some family in Cincinnati plus it's cheaper to travel there from Az and the license/tags cost less

    Going east for deer

Thanks for all the advises. They all sound like really good ideas. I also know people in Ohio. They don't hunt but hopefully will get some connections. One of my friends has family in Georgia. That sounds good also. Will a hunt in Nebraska require a long shot? I was planning on taking my 45-70 or a Henry in 45 colt.

    Once in a lifetime bull

That's awesome, congrats! What load did he use in the 45-70? Grains and powder? Were they hard cast?
  5. Hello, I drew a tag for mule deer on 36A and I'm trying to decide which rifle to start with. I really want to get something with my 45-70 which I reload for, but I'm worried that the shots in that unit will be too far. Is this mostly the case for hunters in 36A? My other option is a 30-06 with a 3-9 scope. Thanks for your help.

Advice on 36A terrain and rifle.

Any mulie with antlers within 150 yrds will be fair game for me. Even if it has crossed eyes and buck teeth. Well it will be a buck with teeth but you know what I mean.

    Guns for muleys 2016

I don't know if there is a thread like this one on the mule deer forum like there is in the coues but if you end up with a mule deer tag, what gun are you planning on using this season to get that muley? I'm using my Marlin 45-70. If I find that it's too hard to get close to the deer then I'll switch to my 30-06.

    Guns for muleys 2016

Flatlander I'm too clumsy, I have a hard time not putting dings on my rifles when I just carry one, so two is a no go for me

    Guns for muleys 2016

Yeah you're right. Common sense is lacking now days. That's how we ended up with liberals running the country twice in a row.

Big or Bust seriously? I guess I should have specified. What I meant was if for the first couple of days I couldn't get close then I would switch

    Texas Hog Hunts

I just want to resurrect this thread by asking if anyone has hunted the hangemhighwhitails for hogs yet. I'm planning to bring up the idea to some of the guys at work tomorrow. If you have, how was your experience, also how far from Arizona is it?

    Elk with Marlin 44mag

What's up CW, I just have a quick question. I got a Marlin in 44 mag and I want it strictly for elk and pigs. Has anyone hunted elk in AZ with one of these? If so what round did you use? Did it take more than one shot to bring it down? Reading on the Internet, people give mixed reports. If the consensus is that it's not enough then I might think about getting a 45-70. Sorry, I gues is not just one quick question, it's more like 3. Thanks

    Elk with Marlin 44mag

Are there other companies just as good as beartooth but with more efficient delivery methods?

    Elk with Marlin 44mag

Thanks Sourdough for the recommendation on the speer bullet. I plan on start reloading this spring, once I get everything ready. From what I've been reading the Marlin likes big diameter bullets. I think the unicor only goes up to 429 and I may need between 431 and 432. Maybe something from beartooth might be what I start with. Would a 250 grain hard cast do the job?

Thanks PR, $43.00 is really not that bad. Hopefully my rifle will like them. I also hope the POI is not to far off. I got it bore sighted earlier this week. It shouldn't take to many rounds to dail it in. We'll see. Ron thanks for the info on the 30-06. I'm going to the range sometime this week. Maybe I'll have some HSM's by then.

    Brand new hunter

Hello everyone, I'm a brand new hunter, well somewhat. The only thing I have ever hunted is pigeons in Puerto Rico for my cousin. We used to go to the Kmart parking lot and shoot them off the power lines with bb guns. Then my grandma would clean them and cook them for him. If it sounds nasty is because it is. I never tasted them, I think they are disgusting. Now a little about myself. I moved to AZ from Puerto Rico about 22 years ago. I finished high school here and then join the Air Force. After 10 years in the AF I separated and joined the Air Guard. I'm also a BP Agent in Nogales. I got drawn for 34A rifle hunt the first week in November. This whole hunting thing is consuming my life right now, in a good way. I've spent a lot of money in equipment and I'm still not done. My plan is to start scouting next month around the east side of the Santa Ritas. I'm going to be solo for the majority of my hunt since no one I know put in for the same dates, but I think it will still be fun. Youtube has been a great source of information on how to field dress and carry dear. This forum is also full of good info. Hopefully good luck will be with me. Well that's it from me. I'd like wish everybody good luck, be careful and have fun.

Well the one I saw was about 180 yards. I actually didn't see it until I spooked it out when I walked down to the ridge I was scouting. Will a 150 grain round have considerably more distance than a 165 out of a 22" barrel, or will the difference be minimal?

Thanks Ron sportsmans is a little far from me that's why I haven't gone there yet, but I think I'm going to go check it out this weekend. How much was the HSM?

Hey all, I'm still doing research for my hunt in November. I'm trying to decide what ammo to get for my savage axis in 30-06. Roninflag recommended HSM Berger but I haven't been able to find it locally in Tucson. What other ammo do the members here recommend. Should I go with 150 or 165 grain for whitetail in 34A? I don't reload yet so it has to be factory ammo.

Thanks for the all the advise. I have another question though. Should I glass for deer in the shadowy slopes or the slopes where the sun is hitting? I know it's easier to see them with the sun behind you but if they're hiding from the sun then they will be on the opposite side of the ridge. Do they like the heat in November or do they still like to avoid it?

Yeah I came to realize today that it is going to be harder than I thought but at least I got eyes on one. Beginners luck I guess, hopefully there will be a repeat.

David, My scouting today produced mixed results. I scouted an area for about 3 hours. After I had enough I decided to walked down to the area I was scouting to see if I could find a better place to glass from. On my way back I spooked a deer on the south facing slope of the ridge I was standing on which is the same ridge I was glassing to 5 min ago. The deer looked small and it was brown with a white behind. Was this a whitetail? My gps indicated I was at almost 6,000 feet. Do muleys get this high up? Would it be worth it for me to go back to the same spot in a couple of weeks even if I already spooked this guy? Is it common knowledge that where there is one there are more?

    Brand new hunter

Thank you every one for all the support and greetings. Lamrith, thanks for the info offer, good luck in October. My hunt is November 6th. Let's see how that goes. I went to the range today and was having issues sighting in my scope. I was shooting 30-06 165 grain core-lokt and 165 grain hornady superperformance. The remington seemed to shoot a little low at 25 and the hornady a little high. At 50 I got the same results. I guess my question should be which round should I stick. If it's high at 25, what will do at 100?

I worked on the A-10. Then I went to Okinawa Japan and worked the test cell for the f-15 engine. Now I work on the F-16 engines for the guard. Still my favorite is the A-10. Old and ugly but still awesome. I got a decent pair of binos and a decent rifle. I still need a havalon. I'm going to have to google that think 'cause I have no idea what it is.

Thank you so much for the good wishes. Edge I'm a jet engine mechanic. But SP is a good guess. Gardner Canyon will be my first scouting area. Can't wait!
