    Done for the Year

Awesome story and very solid buck!! The fact that you sat on him for 2 hours, wow!
  4. Meeting a friend from NM this weekend around the halfway mark to put the AZ bird season to bed. That puts us in the Willcox area so we are planning to search the nearby mountain ranges (Dragoons and Chiris) with a focus on finding some mearns and then chasing scalies after we get too tired and frustrated to keep looking. Neither of us have ever been in these areas, so we are just going in with a map, fresh legs, good boots and hoping for the best. I'll have my shorthair so I'm hoping we can put some scent in his nose before the long snakey months before he'll be able to get after anything again. Anyone have experience or success in these areas that wouldn't mind sharing some general locations to try? A decent access road, or anything would be very much appreciated. PM's welcome too. Thanks and good luck to anyone else going out for the last time this weekend!
  5. Broodstock!! May they have a successful nesting season (double hatch?) and provide a lucky sportsmen with an opportunity next season!
  6. Didn't cover nearly the ground we had intended. Thanks for the information a few people shared. We got into the dragoons but didn't put up any quail. Never made it to the Chiricahuas. Hunted a few places in between for scalies/gambels but action was slow. 3rd Gen Native- it was nice meeting you. Thanks for showing us around a bit! Going to be a long off-season waiting to hunt quail again.

    Most Prized Waterfowl

Pshhh... pathetic!! Only a peasant would shoot them flying away. The only acceptable way to kill a duck is to give them a gentlemanly greeting with your kazoo, tip your hat, and an give an honorable bow. If they accept your invitation to join your decoy orgy and commit to landing nearby, you can ONLY shoot them if they have locked wings, are no more than 15yds above the water and at a total range of no more than 30yds. If one is allowed to land because there are others still working you, and those other birds flare, you've got to let the one on the water go because you should be ashamed you didn't finish the flock. If you wound a bird and it hits the water, you can't dispatch it on the water either. Better have a good retriever!

    Most Prized Waterfowl

Guys that b*tch about people harvesting birds legally in a way that is "below them" are simply jealous you are shooting birds, and have more than likely pulled the trigger on ducks sitting on water themselves... internet "mega-ethical" hypocrites.
  10. That bird (sorry don't know what species) is eating that cottontails face off! Never seen that before.

I brought my ice gear down from Nebraska if anyone wants to go give it a try this weekend. I'm new to the state so wouldn't know where to go!

    First Mearns Hunt

We were both shooting 12ga. I was shooting hotter 7.5 loads moving at 1300fps. Seemed to work fine on these birds. We didn't have any cripples, but keep in mind most of our shots are pretty close because we are flushing the birds from a point. I found some 12 ga, 1oz of #6 @1350 fps loads that are probably going to be my go-to quail loads from now on, however. Will be most beneficial on gambels.

    Sitting a Tank

Get there before first light and throw out some dekes and wait for the 1st hour of shooting time. If you haven't seen any, get outta there... unless you know they are coming in sometime later.

    First Mearns Hunt

Ya I think the old saying is "location, location, location". I think that's a good motto for hunting these birds.

Just google whatever county- Maricopa or Pinal + GIS and use their GIS viewer programming to find out ownership.

    44BN Hunt

Loved hearing about your personal HARD WORK, and SUCCESS! Far more pride to be had by bringing it all together yourself rather than having all the work done for you and just pulling the trigger. Anticlimactic, maybe. But as you said, thinking about the possibility of drawing and the million hunting scenarios you had played out in your mind, it's going to seem that way! But, you didn't need a crew of 20 guys helping you glass and a $10K long-range robot rifle setup to harvest a FANTASTIC trophy!
