Thanks for the advice and encouragement guys, have my father in law with me who is also 70 and can't put in the miles I can. I am convinced there is more donkeys in this unit than elk -
Struggling in unit 10, question on elk behavior

We've been getting up high and trying to glass area that covers more than one water tank -
Currently still in the cow elk hunt in unit 10. We have found an area we keep seeing a young bull in, and one that took off before we can identify it for sure, but that is just in the mornings, not seeing anything at dusk/sunset. Should we keep hitting that area hoping a cow will show up? Should the be split into gender herds by now? This is my first elk hunt, I've seen plenty of mule deer and donkeys, just no cow elk. Any help/insight we be greatly appreciated. I had considered calling a guide service, but I think it would be a bit out of my price range

Good Luck to you as well, I'll be in unit 10

Let's hear it vehicle options for momma ?
Souporman replied to Eagle mountain ranch's topic in The Campfire
my wife has a 2014 Subaru forester, nice enough family car. Has a good safety rating, the all wheel drive works great, gas mileage is pretty amazing for an SUV, however the AC feels kinda weak for a vehicle its size. -
I will be going up to scout in august/September, I have a cow tag for unit 10 in October. If anyone else has any more advice for the unit (its my first elk hunt) please let me know, thanks. Hunt2live if I see any areas with good bulls when I scout ill shoot you a pm

So this hunt ended up being a lot of firsts for me, my first bow hunt, first javelina and first time solo. Basically all my buddies had to bail on the hunt early. I was out with the bow trying to get a deer but could never close the distance enough to where I felt comfortable taking a shot. On my walk back from where I had seen a group of deer earlier in the morning I was walking back in a wash and heard some snorting and rooting around, but when I put my pack down I startled them too. I had ordered a javelina call but it hadn't shown up yet, but I had some hunting app the had a javelina distress call on it on my phone so I gave it a shot. Sure enough about half of them came running back and I took down the one that stood still. Sorry for the bad picture, my phone was dieing so I didn't get a follow up picture, and the sun was going down fast so I was trying to get it field dressed while I still had light. It was a long, dark and stinky walk back

I had called the main office because I sent my left over tag application to the PO box and the lady said it would be checked on Monday 8/3. There seems to be a huge variety of answers depending on who you talk to, I guess ill just wait. -
Me and a friend did Dos Plumas in Texas (it was the closest one I could find to AZ) . it was $300 for 2 nights, which included 2 pigs. There is a tax so be prepared to pay for that as well + 50 for an out of state hunt license. The land was real dense with cedar and they setup up feeders they take you to early morning and just before sunset, with blinds set up at the feeders. The first day I only saw some baby pigs that were barely off the teat, so the owner, Allen, took us around in his pickup after "corning" the roads and still saw nothing. The next day a storm moved in and it started raining/ snowing (it was mid January) and the pigs were much more active, nearly all of us saw some pigs, I shot one in the neck with a 30-06 and it still got up and ran in to the brush and we weren't able to recover it.(They did find it after we left and sent a pic). My buddy that didn't see a thing was offered a free do-over hunt. The lodging was nice, good beds, warm, fridges, stove etc, if you don't come with 6 people in your group they will book up the rooms to other hunters. We do plan on going back next January, even though they have upped their rates to $400. I would recommend not bothering going in the morning unless its really cold out and just stay up at night and get some of the red hogging lights.
