I picked up a couple smaller brown elk sheds last weekend near a snow line. Didn't see any still packing.

Anyone seeing any dropped bulls or antlers on the ground? I saw a FB post from 2016 that I was picking up browns on this day that year.

It is tough to find sheds in AZ. In flatter areas they will drop all over the place and we have good road access pretty much everywhere so those spots get cleaned out fast. SE facing hillsides close to good water sources are the general best places to find sheds. Anywhere that gets good sun mid-winter is where you want to start looking. Wind sheltered valleys where elk bed down and fence lines are also good spots to start. Everyone here says shed hunt valleys and that may be true for the country off the rim but I've found all my best sheds over 7-8k feet usually close to snow lines. Google earth, find a good water source close to some hills and varied terrain where you know a good herd is and then start pounding ground. If you are pulling 1-2 horns every 10 miles or so of hiking you are doing well for AZ.

the ditch or the fence is usually what causes them to drop. some fence lines pay off every year if you know where to go.

Got into a few browns in 7 yesterday. The big one is 9 lbs and I've picked him up 3 years in a row.

Put down about 30 miles in AZ and NM last week or so and 3/4 of the bulls and bucks we saw were still packing. One bull looked like he was running around with a set of chalks on his head they were so bleached. Holding longer due to the mild winter maybe?

Brown down in s. NM. Not my pic.

Don't forget to ride your quad all over the forest...

I am thinking they will drop up high this season due to the general lack of snow pretty much everywhere in the west. Last season they definitely dropped lower than past years. Snow line seems to have a big impact on where the sheds fall in the area I hunt. What do you guys think for your area?

Bump - Jared is in AZ right now if anyone is looking to sell. -
Yeah, I've pulled some really weird sheds out of there. Pics below are from 7W as well. Love the club set and got him 2 years in a row, exact same spot.

dang. Where I grew up in NM we've had a few people die from elk vs. car accidents. Scary stuff.

Good find. Go back to the same spot next spring and see if you can get some fresh ones.

Shed I pulled in 7W last summer. Definitely some weird genetics going on out there.
