Found this on my turkey hunt this past weekend. I consider it a needle in a very large haystack.

It was great meeting you and talking FH! Let me know if you're up in Flag and hopefully we'll see you at camp again! Thanks! I'm definitely proud. She went into this hunt more determined than I've ever seen her. She did quite a bit of the hunt planning and calling, which was great, especially because she planned pretty much like I would have! We got on birds Friday and Saturday, with Saturday being the best. I ended up calling in a hen to 8 yards and kept her talking just enough to bring the gobbler in eventually. He came in to 70 yards, fanned out once, and both hens out in front of us just packed up and walked off with him. There was nothing I could do to convince him. All we needed was 40 more yards! And that was the norm. Same goes for you if you are ever down in the FH area let me know, we can look for those jaguars you love so much.

Had a blast on this hunt, birds were pretty talkative if you got into the right ones. Kid I was mentoring tagged out at 6am on Sunday and I hit the road right afterwards because of some vehicle issues so not sure how many more were brought in after that. Learned a new area a little and met some great people. Definitely know where a lot of birds are hanging around in those areas now though. Got it on video which I'll post probably after my hunt in a couple weeks don't have alot of time for editing at the moment.

Bump again, I'll be up there as a mentor.

Have the same hunt, hope for snow, never been in the area but hear it's much better when the highlands get snow.

Awesome tom, that's my next goal is to harvest a large tom.

Nope but it's a leftover tag and they have til late April to get it here, I have faith they can do it by then.

And as far as a locator I use owl at night and morning and crow during the day. In Oklahoma I was trying to locate birds from my truck on a trail and used a box call, they ran into me while I'm still sitting in my vehicle, flat footed and dumb. That's the last time I've ever made hen sounds when not prepared to kill one.

Got that tag as well, did the same hunt last year no problem finding birds, very little snow at the very highest elevations left on ground, hoping for the same this year. Either way beautiful country and lots of birds.

Push button box call is great, paddle box, and slate pot calls for the beginner, diaphragms are great if experienced with them, but the easier ones have called in just as many turkeys for me as have diaphragms, it's all about the birds attitude. They say not to over call but don't believe that it doesn't work, sometimes that aggressive calling is what brings them in. Welcome to turkey hunting, there is no textbook.

Headed out this morning, for the 5th weekend, to intentionally target lion, little windy in the new canyon I had never tried, and alot warmer than it had been. Started off with mouse in distress, to rabbit in distress, onto mad domestic cat. Nothing seemed to be working at all, didn't even get a fox to come in on the rabbit call which is odd, considering they always come in to check things out. Had no luck with the electronic caller so switched to a small squeaker out of a kong ball I had destroyed the night before to get to the tube, dog was not happy about that, but I figured it sounded enough like a mountain lion whistle to give it a go, and I was bored with listening to the electronic caller, and didn't have the most confidence in this stand. Blew on that for a few minutes, and flipped back on the rabbit distress. If you've ever listened to a predator call sequence, you realize after a short time, that you can remember every note of them, and you hear them when they aren't on, it's like a song stuck in the head. So I tried a call (won't tell you what it was) I had never used on the call set it at half volume, pretty loud for the turbo dogg and let it run. Not more than three minutes later I hear rocks rolling on the trail I'm on, and before I can get my eyes adjust left, there is a mountain lion barreling towards the call, so in my head I'm screaming HOLY #%&^ A LION!!, while getting my gun up into position. Cat stopped ten paces from me, catching my movement and stared me down, found bead locked on and fired, cat turned during shot, and caught back haunches, she jumped around in the trail a little while and took a broadside shot on her, that was the end of that. I have the utmost respect for this predator, and everything they represent about the west, feel very fortunate I was able to harvest one, cross this off my bucket list, and will never forget the feeling, of having my heartbeats go from 60 bpm to over 150 in a second.

If you drew a tag for post and you haven't seen the new regulations yet, I highly suggest getting a hold of them before coming down, as there have been some major changes that may effect your ability to hunt without the proper planning and actions on your part.

Out doing some calling in the huachucas this morning, hoping for that lottery ticket lion, first time out calling. And was bombarded with grey fox, 8 individuals within ten minutes of starting the caller. Trail I was hunting looked like an alley of stray cats. My question is, what shot size is best for preserving their hide? Or do I need to find a 410 somewhere with 7 1/2 shot for minimal damage? Want a nice mount but don't want to drop the cash on a new gun, or wouldn't be able to afford the mount, such a quandary.

Went out for hour and half on Sunday, found four coveys and didn't fire a shot. Was seeing 2/3 grown birds mixed with adults and couldn't make myself feel right about it. All scalies probably typical breed in response to monsoon birds. Will try lower elevation next weekend more towards gambel hang outs to see what they're up to. Dog got some work though and no snakes was a plus.

Pulling out the gps collar puts my dog into a trance wondering why she isn't in the jeep and why said collar is not around her neck. Tomorrow I tell her but like a child they don't have a lot of concept of time for award.

Way to hot for the dog still, 60 as a low isn't quite where I'd feel good about her first runs of the year, warms up quick too. Hopefully will get a cold front come in put us in low fifties soon in the morning.

Hunting quail with dogs
spqhunt replied to Edge's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
That young dog you hunted with I would love to happen in Montana on those wide open prairies, great place for a dog like that. My dog will range a half mile at times on mearns up some rocky terrain and she's still on point when I lug my butt up to her huffing and puffing -

To be fair to the young dog coveys of gambles and scalies aren't designed to hold, if they did they'd be bobwhites or mearns. My dog has learned the difference flush the scalies and gambles hunt the singles, hold for mearns.
