Leaf footed bugs. That subtype you have photos of are also known as Giant Mesquite Bug, Thasus neocalifornicus

I would never buy anything made by ALPZ. They rip off designs from companies that cannot afford to sue. Look what they did to FHF Gear with the bino harness this year. I would say buy an Eberlestock Team Elk or Mainframe with add ons. If you can afford it down the road buy a Kifaru. You don't want a pack failure during a stalk or after a kill. Have been through a lot of packs. Some with some great warranties that didn't mean much 10 miles in. I would highly recommend watching pack fitting videos done by Aron Snyder with Kifaru. He helped me out years ago on bowsite. Was almost able to double my packout weights.

Any place in the Blackhills (basically the whole west side of the Verde Valley) has a scattering of elk. These herds are the ones most people hunt during the 19A and 21 draw. They are NOT included in the OTC tag area. If AES could get approval to do a bunch of Water for Wildlife projects in the Blackhills it would result in some great elk habitat. Hunting would be similiar to unit 8 if they created enough water sources. These elk are generally in very rough country relying on a limited number of small water sources. Lots of predation has occured when calving due to limited water sources only in easy ambush areas. Some large groups can be found in 21 but in 19a when you do find them it is generally just 3-5 at a time. I heard that someone saw some south of 169 out in the open last weekend on the 19a side. I generally see some elk in 19a every couple months. If I went looking for them I would expect that I would see some every 5 days or so.

The MSR Guardian Purifier is the best thing going now. Low maintenance if you use a coffee filter on it. It backflushes for you and will remove just about anything. Also very fast so you can refill without wasting hunting time. It is not damaged if it freezes since hollow fiber technology allows the ice to expand out the ends of the fiber instead of cracking it. You can do integrity tests on the system and due maintence in the field if need be. The special forces will switching over to it. Was a special project that only MSR passed. Most other filters failed very simple tests. Have seen a few patients get really sick after using a steripen. Think the lip of the bottle is still contaminated. Would be a great secondary treatment and worth hauling since they are lightweight. Gravity systems and lots of filters for the most part are 0.1 microns so you can still have viruses get through easily. This has been a serious issue in some areas that previoisly had no problems. You also have to watch them closely since most are destroyed if they freeze.

OTC Verde Valley used to have elk. Now it is a waste of money. Think the unbelievable number of transients helped kill off any remaining elk. When the Prescott Jail closed and they started shipping all those people to the Verde Valley things changed a lot around here. I now pack a pistol all the time after having my life threatened more than once. Those elk used to be able to go to the river for water. Now there are illegal camps every half mile. Turned in 5 camps in one day. Somehow local law enforcement never caught anyone. People still get into elk by Winslow along the Little Colorado river and by Alamo lake. Good luck. I am sure you can get it done if you want to spend a few weeks at it or call TLO and still expect at least a week.

Leupold setup with rangefinder works really well. Very good setup for kesterels during late hunts.

As you can see the harness is nice and thin and rides similar to a crooked horn without the bounce or the sag and drag on the ground when crawling. 4th picture down shows how to tuck the lid for quick access which is not possible with the AGC.

With my Leica Geovid HD-B and Leupold Gold rings I never had an issue since I use a size larger than FHF recommends. First bought a large and could not quickely pull out my geovids with an arrow nocked. Only serious issue I had with AGC was the buckle would hit my binos sometimes and a coyote heard and froze at 110 yards when calling for a friend wanting to get his first coyote. Made for a good broadside shot. If you go with AGC get their new hook and bungee system. Glad they listened to me and others and fixed this flaw. I did see some complants from a guy using one of the models of vortex binos but not another model. This was with FHF and AGC sice they line thier pouches with similair fabrics. Think all cordura needs a few weeks of breakin to make them quiet. Since I have the Geovids I pull out my binos to rangefind before shots. Had 3 different whitetail bucks feeding together last year at 40 yards I ranged. No shot due to brush. Had 6 other occasions with mule deer within 60 yards with no issue. Sorry I live up north and avoid phoenix.

My dad uses the $60 snake gaiters from cabelas but they make you sweat like crazy and are loud in catclaw. Incase anyone is wondering CroFab is costing around $2800 a vial right now. See most bites in the lower legs and hands. FYI the anti-venom does not work so well on the Mojave rattlesnakes with type A venom which is highly neurotoxic. Saw a case that required 27 vials. Heard of a case with 42 vials.

http://www.classicusc.com/store/p/1052-TurtleSkin-SnakeArmor-Husky-Gaiters.aspx?feed=Froogle&gclid=CJ_Vsbff3cwCFQEGaQodEQAMLw If you take good care of the zippers they last a long time. Bought mine 4 years ago. Just warm weather hiking I have worn out 2 pairs of kenetreks and a pair of Lowa Baffin pros are about halfway gone now. I tie the gaiters to my laces with Para cord from the bottom side of the grommets. This will wear some on the laces. Have to replace kenetrek laces about halfway through the rubber wear on the bottoms.
-
I even wear them now when catfishing from the bank. Come in handy during dove season.

Yep those rattlesnakes can be a pain. I normally avoid thick cover or deep grass at night since with a red light you will still miss some. If you plan to night call a lot buy some turtle skin snake gaiters. I got the largest size they make so they fit over my boots easier and are cooler on the calf.

6A has around 3800 elk tags a year between all the hunts. Elk get pushed all over. Quality has slipped a ton in the last 10 years. Nothing you can do about the tag numbers this year, but please kill every coyote you see. Hike at least 10 miles a day for 7+ days and you will have decent odds of killing. Also be prepared to call Operation Game Theft 1-800-352-0700, lots of illegal activity in 6A.
-
Recommend that you listen for a pack then move within a 1/4 mile without lights before calling. Decreases your chance of calling in things other than coyotes.

Saw a bull grown out really well aready last week. Counted 6 points on one side for sure. Saw at least 5 on the other side. Everyone else with him was only out to the thirds. Too bad he is not in the unit I drew.

Anyone left handed should buy this ASAP. Only negative is the whisker biscuit.

If I had to pick one it would FHF gear. I buy the size larger than suggested so I can run my binos with one hand during a stalk. The FHF ones are like a more trim version of the AGC. The FHF straps are much better if hot out. Both are very good quality and honestly owning both would fit all situations. The biggest advantage to AGC is they block dust a little better. If you walk a lot when it is hot out get the FHF gear for sure. If you ride quads a lot get AGC.

Well what do you guys think about the online draw? Never have the time to go to the meetings and they never send out surveys about this topic. It has gone really bad for me the last couple draw cycles. So many errors and phone calls. Hope this poll is helpful. Maybe it can be shown to the commission.

By the way all 4 elk skulls were from kills in AZ
-
Even though deer are vegetarians they will eat skulls for minerals. I have multiple videos of a mule deer doe this summer eating elk skulls. She ended up eating a total of 4 cow elk skulls in about a month. The 10+ people that have seen the videos were amazed. I understand some of the AZGFD concerns because of this, but I think they went about this seriously wrong. I am a diy type person and will now be packing a ton of extra gear to process my animals while on out of state hunts. Doing europeans mounts in the bush and wasting an extra day will now be common place for me.

Hey those Swarovski 18x56s were deemed too powerful for fair chase. They capped them at 15x to prevent 100% success rates. Sorry could not resist
