Congratulations looking forward to watching that video.

Nice looking calls Ammon I love the sound of trumpet and wing bone calls.

Job well done and nice bird. Thanks for helping the youth.

Nice tom from what I have heard you did better than most in New Mexico this weekend. I have a friend going for a US Slam and one of the better turkey hunters I know he went home empty handed today still needing his New Mexico bird.

Good Job. Thanks for sharing those great photos. It was a great time out there this weekend.

This ought to get you turkey hunters lucky enough to draw a Gould's tag in Arizona stirred up a bit. Here are a few Gould's at my friends ranch in the corral eating the range cakes put out for the horses. Will be in this area helping a friend with his fourth Gould's tag on May 1st.

Heading out to Florida to hunt this nice Osceola in Florida this next week.

Turkey like meadows over thicker forest on windy days because it is harder for them to hear in the wind so I glass meadows on windy days.

Good luck to you and your son Sean. I will do everything in my power to help your son get a chance at a gobbler so please keep in touch this weekend.

They usually pair up hunters with their mentors Thursday evening hopefully there will be some mentors remaining. It all depends on how many mentors they have. Last year there were a lot more hunters then mentors and with the amount of kids showing up this year I would imagine the mentors will go quickly. I have sent you a PM.

thanks for posting couestracker. I already have three kids I'll be mentoring in units 1 and 27 hopefully more if time permits. I'll be at the Colcord Ridge camp. Good luck! Thank you sir and good luck to you too.

This is my favorite time to turkey hunt the hens are on eggs the bigger birds are still looking for love and there are a lot less hunters out in the field. I call in a lot more birds and they tend to be the older bigger toms.

I use the upright hen and the Jake and this combo worked great just added the submissive hen to the bunch and looking forward to seeing how it works this Friday. Usually the only time I use them is for the youth hunt and the archery hunt.

I don't agree with the "one and done" but I do think AZGFD should have a 3-5 year wait period like they had back in the sixties before applying for that same species once you are drawn.
-
No problem hearing the birds in their roosts this morning, found three different random roosts and called one bird in.
-
I don't know how he does it the last time he was drawn was 2012 guess he hold his tongue just right when he applies. I have only had one myself. He is hunting 35A.

Man, you got it made! Just sit on the porch with a hot cup of coffee, shotgun, and a box call! Is there still much snow around up there? LOL I was thinking the same thing the ultimate blind. No there is not much snow, what remains is mostly in the higher country

paddle/long box calls work really well in the wind.

not sure where you are going but the are gobbling in the Reserve area.

Good question and one that does not get asked very often. Some say it is/was a fad. I'm not so sure it was a fad. The main thing for me is lighter weight and it is easier to swing the shorter barrels. As far as ballistics goes I don't believe there is an advantage to shotgun barrels longer than 22". I believe the tighter turkey chokes they have on the market now is more important than barrel length, but I have yet (knock on wood) to miss a bird with the setup I have now so I'm staying with what I have. Main thing is to pattern your gun I like to start at 20 yards and move the target out to 40 yards in 5 yard increments. If you are using the turkey head targets the experts say you should have any where from 12 to 40 pellets in the head and neck area. Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Depends on the gun and choke too Rack I shoot a 12 ga 24in 870 REM and use the factory full choke and use the Winchester Double X 3" 1300 velocity (i believe the Winchester XR's are only 1200 velocity) 1-3/4oz 6 shot have yet to miss a bird with this combination. I will not shoot 3-1/2 on shells no need IMHO and I will not shoot past 40 yards if I'm not good enough to call the bird into that range or better the bird wins. I also use an Ithaca Model 37 22 in barrel 12 ga with factory choke and the same shells as above. Last week I shot this gun and it did exceptional from 20 yards out to forty yards in 5 yard increments where I put 18 pellets in the head/neck area of the target at 40 yards. The main thing is to pattern the gun for the load you are using. I might be able to help you save some $$$ on shells if you let me know what gun and choke you will be using. Good luck. Bill

Becareful Willy if you were drawn for the first hunt you must wait until after the second hunt to actually hunt which would be May 8Th when you can hunt again. Actually this is my favorite time to hunt turkey.

I'll be out mentoring youth hunters all next weekend in that unit I'll give you an update at that time and it will be closer to your hunt.
