Start to a busy spring!-Update-Osceola Down.

one of the officers in the West Palm area told my friend "They've been gobbling around here for a while it's too hot out, not normal for sure". besides a little heat sounds like you'll be hearing a lot of gobbling thats a good thing, bug juice for them squitoes might come in handy. Good Luck hope Jaycie bags a big beard with nice spurs looking forward to some pics and video.

Start to a busy spring!-Update-Osceola Down.

I know it's been windy down there the last few days so the birds have not been real active. the winds are suppose to die down this weekend so it should be good. If you let me know what area you're hunting my friend is the director of the Fish and Wildlife down there and he can let me know how the birds in your area are behaving.

    Tags?

Let me know if you're interested in meeting up and/or swapping info. Found out my daughter will have the whole weekend, after all, assuming she doesn't fill her tag in the opening of the youth hunt. heck yes Brian lets plan on it if your daughter does not get one on the youth hunt we'll make sure she gets first shot on our hunt. plenty of birds (snow too) up that way we should not have a problem getting a couple of birds.

    Leftover turkey tag success!

Says I was drawn for a 12A leftover tag too but the way the GnF is handling this draw I won't believe it until I get the tag in my hands. This late 12a hunt is a great hunt good luck at actually getting a tag.

    Unit 23!

NB is correct the best locater call is a turkey call. I carry 2 different box calls, vibrating tongue call (can't wait to see the responses on this one), five different pot calls four diaphragm calls and a trumpet call. Usually one of those calls will make a gobbler respond and I will stay with that call. I do not like to use cookie cutter box or pot calls all my calls are custom made, you pay a little more but it is worth the extra $$. Ammon at Little Creek Calls makes some great custom calls, he also has several turkey hunting seminars down there in the valley that are worth attending. IMO later in the season the better not as many hunters the gobblers are away from the hens, it is much easier to call in and kill the bigger gobblers. Start practicing now with your turkey calling there are many instructional videos online. Like Coues79 stated above "Wait til you call in your first tom you'll be hooked for the rest of your hunting days." Happy Turkey Hunting and Good Luck.
  17. yes I planned on getting in touch with the bank after I was sure the draw was complete it's any ones guess how the GnF would have handled that before the draw.

    Any one use jebs choke?

3 or 4 boxes? That would last me 30-40 turkey hunts. I originally bought two boxes of 10 shells each. After 3 hunts and 3 birds, I still have 17 left. Turkey hunting isn't like dove hunting.makes my head hurt just think about that many shots of 3.5 mags yea I purchased a box of 10 of those 3.5 mag turkey loads three years ago took my gun out to the range to see how they would pattern, three years later I still have 9 shells remaining those darn things kick like a mule and I'm getting to old for that. don't see much use for them when 3" do the job. I do not shoot turkey beyond 40 yards any way I like the challenge of getting them as close as possible.
  19. FYI GnF seems to have issues with every draw. They charged my account four times for the application fee and all I applied for was Turkey and Bison. I've had been in contact since late September about being charged the extra application $$ and all they keep telling me is we are working on it, not that $26 is going to break me.

    Question for Mexico Hunters

you need a CITES permit. FYI it can take up to 60 days to obtain so plan accordingly. The outfitter if you are using one usually takes care of all the paper work for you. USDA Requirements for Gould's and Ocellated Turkeys The USDA requires bird skins and/or raw body parts to be processed by an "Approved Establishment." Taxidermists apply to the USDA for such approval. Commercial taxidermists are permitted by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to handle domestic migratory bird specimens such as ducks and geese but that has nothing to do with USDA provisions. The two agencies issue separate permits. If your taxidermist is not sure whether he is approved for foreign birds by the USDA, that means he is not. You should do the following things in advance of your hunting trip. Contact your taxidermist long before your trip to learn whether he is USDA-approved. If he is not approved, go to this USDA web site: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/animal_import/downloads/query-app-estab.html. Enter in the blank space on that web page only the 2-letter abbreviation for your state and click SEARCH. That should take you to an approved taxidermist list for the state you asked for. Select a taxidermist from the list that is approved to handle bird skins and arrange for him to do the work. Prepare a mailing label with your approved taxidermist's name, phone number, and shipping address and have it with you when you return to the U.S. border with your turkey skin. Having the label will simplify the process of shipping the specimen if that should be required. You will usually be permitted to import your specimen and carry it to a shipping point or hand-deliver it to your taxidermist. Fish & Wildlife Service Requirements for Gould's and Ocellated Turkeys You will be required by the USFWS to fill out their Form 3-177 at the port of entry whether you cross the border by land, sea, or air. You can visit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service web site and obtain form 3-177 and instructions and fill it out in advance at this link: http://www.fws.gov/le/pdffiles/3-177-1.pdf. You will find other pertinent information about importation of trophies on the USFWS web site at http://www.fws.gov/permits/. If you have difficulty with Form 3-177, print out a copy and bring it with you on the hunt. We will have instructions in camp and can assist you. I will have a supply USFWS forms 3-177 and we will fill them out before you leave camp. It is advisable to avoid arriving at the port of entry with your trophy on a Saturday, Sunday, or a holiday. Even at large ports, the Fish and Wildlife Service may threaten to charge an "overtime" fee.
