  1. I went through this not to long ago. I set up a trust because I was doing 3 NFA transactions and I have a young family. Then once complete I'll add my trustees.

I went with a SiCo Omega 300 because I plan to run it between ARs and bolt guns. Best option for weight/length/versatility in my opinion. Then for the little stuff I went with the SiCo Sparrow- got a smoking deal on sale and it will go on the .17hmr and .22s.

  2. You're crazy!  But hey, you asked for it!  Here in Texas we get quite a few deer tags, not to mention the hogs... makes having extra ammo handy.

More importantly, it never hurts to have another round available, the animal (and conditions) often get a vote and I want to have a back up. I won't be carrying a single shot either when I go to AK. And for the same reason I don't carry a revolver or BP pistol on duty ;)

But back to the issue at hand-- I've found DBM that allows loading to 3.5" but seems the long heavies in 300wm will push beyond that. Just looking to hear from others who have done it.

I dug up an old load development thread from Lance on a 300wm Tikka I think but I wasn't sure if he was single loading or what.

  3. Been looking at Tikka rifles again, especially now that better aftermarket stocks are becoming more common. The biggest draw back seems to be magazine length. I've heard 3.2 or 3.3" for long action cartridges.

However- now Grayboe and Mountain Tactical are both offering bottom metal that allows for use of AI mags and I've hard a few more companies are as well. Anyone have details or experience with DBM Tikka's?  What about preference of magazines? Would polymer mags be better for hunting if they don't have that same rattle or noise as a metal one would?

I think that you should stay with what you have.  In case a coyote shows up.  unless you are selling furs overkill is not an issue.  Better to be dead than wounded in the dark.

Let me ask you a question where is best duck hunting, spring snow hunting in TX.  I would like to hire an outfitter.  Got any suggestions?  Thanks

The boys from Crooked Wing absolutely smash birds out around Lubbock!! A few buddies of mine from Midland have hunted with them. They are probably some of the best specialists at the Sandhill Crane game too!

If you come further east then I think North Texas Outfitters does well too!

  6. Found a great new hobby here in Texas-- Predators... have access to some spots with lots of coons, skunks, badgers and foxes.  Took the .223 and 12ga last time and it was a bit overkill. Didn't see many coyotes and we are primarily hunting at night with red lights. So- I'm thinking a .17hmr might be the ticket, and suppressed might also be the way to go.

    Looking at:

Ruger American Rimfire Target (grey laminate, threaded barrel)

Savage A17 Target Sporter (laminate, semi-auto, NOT threaded....yet)-- ALSO- has anyone run this model with a suppressor, I've never run a suppressed rimfire so I'm not sure of gas issues.

Tikka T1x MTR -- if I can find one

Which models have I left out that might be a good fit?

Thoughts on optics for nighttime hunting under a redlight?? A thermal is on the dream list but Im thinking something light and small for fast acquisition, even maybe a mini red dot?
