  1. Yes it work that way if needed. If you leave it in a tree make sure you cable lock it. I would also recommend strongly to use a strap/rope to link the bottom and top portion of the stand. That way if you kick or nudge it and it accidentally slides you don't lose it down the tree. This is more common than you think with climbers. The other option would be to use a ratchet strap on the top and bottom portion to attach them more solidly to the tree.

  2. Which model? I shot a hardcore for years and just switched to a Carter?

Play around with trigger pull weight. Make it as light as you are comfortable with and then a little more and get comfortable at the range. I found a nice light release shrunk my groups considerably at distance!

  3. If it ain't broke don't fix it! I'm with most of the guys on the thread-- Leave it be... for now. If it is shooting ok and there are no mechanical issues I would just give it a good cleaning and if anything maybe work up some good loads for it.

Once if has given you a mechanical reason to make a major change (action issue, barrel shot out, etc etc).... then have at it, re-do the stock and make it into something that you will still be proud to pass down!

  4. Splatt-- Not a lot of Coues experience here but I've killed lots of whitetail in NC, KY and OK. After my trip to AZ I felt my choice of 6.5x284 was spot on. The only thing I might have changed was to go up to a slightly faster version of a 6.5 or maybe even a quarter bore. I think on an animal the size of the Coues deer you can focus on velocity to reduce your drops at range and simplify your shooting equations/hold over, without compromising terminal performance.

If I were building a Rem 700 specific to come hunt Coues again it would be one of the fast 6.5s (.264WM, .26Nosler, 6.5SAUM) as fast as I could push a 130gr or .257s (weatherby or a 25-06AI) pushing a 100gr or 110gr AB. Matter of fact I have the 25-06 barreled action right now so that may happen sooner than later.

  5. More pics when he makes it all the way back to KY!! Can't say enough about the shop or the folks there. Extremely kind and helpful and great communication with them!!
