  1. Google "around the neck hearing protection" Lots of companies make some that are a hard plastic U with foamies on the end that stay around your neck perfect when you're hunting. Cost 3-4 bucks.

A brake will certainly make a world of difference. If your gonna have a factory rifle threaded and add a brake make sure the diameter at the muzzle will support the thread pitch you want.

  2. Dad passed down his Bushnell Spacemaster this Christmas! It is a 25x eyepiece and 60mm OBJ. The model # appears to be 78-1800.

Initial google search seems to show that guys used these with a 15-45x eyepiece or they mounted two with fixed magnification together to make some big eyes.

Having issues finding other eyepieces or even another spotter with the dual mount. Any ideas besides eBay?

    Thanks!

  3. Got my hands on 3 more Rem 783- all in .270 and all with factory 3-9x40 scopes. They are going to be given to 3 lucky vets on a deer hunt here in TX in JAN. I took apart all 3 and cleaned them, properly remounted the scopes and adjusted the triggers down slightly.

As they came out of the box all were in good shape but the scope mounting and torque on the action screws varied wildly from rifle to rifle. I torqued the action screws to 45in/lb and scope rings to 20. I boredighted then and hit the range today with the $19.99 Winchester Deer SeasonXP 130gr. They dialed in quickly.

The limiting factor in the equation was the scope. Even at 100yd the glass was not great and it was difficult to focus. The large, thick crosshair made Precision difficult. My 783 .308 with a Prostaff Nikon was night and day difference.

Here are the best groups of the day all 3 shot consistently. There was some shooter error but they all got at or under 1.

Looks like pics got rotated a little.

  4. Is 1500 rounds an expected barrel life from a sporter weight barrel in 300wm? Maybe it is just fouled up and needs a good scrubbing with something that will remove the copper?

If it really is shot out then I would give the folks at Pac-Nor a call. I've had two of their barrels that shot great. AND- I sent them a M70 and for the price of the barrel, truing the action and chambering/installing the barrel it was way less than your $1000+ mark. The turn around time was not fast.... but it was done right and it looks/shoots great. Mine was a 7RM that is now a .338wm.

  5. I hope those guys slip up and get caught and you can get your gear back!! File the police report and def check your insurance.

I had a rude surprise too when I found out there were limitations on my policy for firearms and optics. I had to add a rider to my policy as well.

Since then I keep an excel document with serial numbers, make and model of everything of value-- scopes, binos, guns and I have pics of them in there and the serial numbers as well just for that reason.

We will all be keeping an eye out on other forums!!

  6. I didn't like the interface on the 1600B-- I like the Leupold 1200tbr that I have right now but I find the glass is a bit dark. I'm going to Cabelas soon to take a look at the Sig 2200 that is on sale and decide between those two.

Don't pay more than $250 for a new Leupold-- they are on sale several times a year at Cabelas-- like right now.

  7. I killed two bucks this year with the factory Barnes LRX 7RUM-- 145gr @3350, 26" Proof Sendero Lite.

    127 yards bang flop

    411 yards bang flop

Neither bullet recovered, exit wounds were slightly larger than a fully expanded bullet.

I am running the 175 Berger Elite Hunters for my final hunting load. It darn near matches my 7RM. They are a max load, so you will need to start probably 4 grains lower and work up.

    Rifle info: (built by AxisWorks)
R700 LA BDL trued, fluted bolt w. CF knob & alloy bolt shroud
26" 1:9" Proof Research "Light Sendero" w. Hawkins 3 port brake
    Manners EH-1 bedded
    Seekins 20MOA Picatinny Rail
    Seekins 30mm low rings
Premier Heritage Light Tactical 3-15×50 w. Gen 2XR
Weight of scoped rifle: 8lbs 15oz
    Recoil is mild, less than my 10.5# unbraked.260 pushing a 140 @ 2850.
I thought the scope might be a little under-powered for really long shots, but the 15x is plenty for medium sized game out to 1300+. Also allows enough for refined holds out to 1000 easily.

    Nosler .280AI brass
    Fed GM210M
    58.0 RL23
    175 Berger Elite Hunter
    2.690" CBTO (.0100" jump)
    2976fps MV (verified w. Drops @ 545/763/926/1191/1268/1365)
    Shoots .213" @ 100, 2.9" @ 926.
250 yard zero gives me 2.4" high (max rise) at 165 yards, 2.4" low @ 300 yards. In was really hoping to have some on-game reviews after this late elk season, but that didn't pan out. I will have to try and smoke a coyote or two this winter with them.

I also had a couple good loads with 168 Berger HVLD. They were much more finicky than the 175s. Two loads showed excellent accuracy once I tuned them up.

    Nosler .280AI brass
    Fed GM210M
    60.5 H1000
    168 Berger HVLD
    2.700" CBTO (touching lands)
    2850fps MV
    Shot .3 @ 100, 2.2" @ 565

    Nosler .280AI brass
    Fed GM210M
    63.5C H1000 (max load-start lower)
    168 Berger HVLD
    2.690" CBTO (.0100" jump)
    2987fps MV
    Shot in the high .1s @ 100, 2" @ 602

H4831 gave some pretty good speeds and accuracy during development too.

I have some 160 Sierra TMKs I am going to play around with for more of a varmint/paper/steel round @ slightly lower pressures/speeds to extend brass and barrel life. I am expecting good things from them.

I will also be working up a load with the 145 Barnes LRX in anticipation of drawing a Kaibab tag in the next few years. No use waiting until I draw that tag to start load development.

    Do not discount a 175-180 HVLD/Elite Hunter/Classic Hunter/Hybrid, 160-183 SMK/SGK/TMK, 168-175 ELD-X, 160 NAB, etc.

H4831, H1000, RL23, RL26 would be my powder choices for the heavier bullets from 160 and up. Some are more temp stable, some are more accurate, some give better speeds. All a choice you will have to make.

  8. Got my hands on a Remington 783 .308 about two weeks ago. It has a 4-12x Nikon ProStaff scope and the factory base/rings.

I have to say that I have a very positive overall impression of this rifle and wanted to share the limited experience I've had with it. I got my hands on it the night before a hunt (not optimal I know). Let's start with the most important part- accuracy.

Accuracy- The rifle was cleaned but unfired and the scope had been mounted and bore sighted by a gunsmith before I got my hands on the rifle. I didn't get to check torque on the rings/base/action screw or anything. Went to 25m, fired one shot from a front bag only, made some slight adjustments, second shot, now windage correct. Move back to 50m, third shot, windage correct, elevation still slightly low. Move back to 100m, shots 4-6 all 1", slightly low. Make elevation correction (wanted 1.5" high at 100m), two shots almost touching. Move back to 150m and hit soda can size tannerite target. Ready to go. 2hrs later in the stand, 1 shot, 1 doe, 125m, bang flop. Couldn't have been more impressed with how well the rifle shot given the conditions and one half of a box of ammo. Found out later they do pillar bed the plastic stock.

Ammo- was 150gr Hornady American Whitetail Soft Point.

Trigger- Unadjusted, slightly heavy but very shootable. Reminds me of an accu-trigger given the style. Once I get it adjusted I will amend the review.

Aesthetics- Nice looking rifle, the stock feels much nicer than the comparable models (Axis, Ruger American, XPR), weight is slightly heavier than I expected from the look. Not crazy about the small ejection port. The 4rd detachable magazine fed flawlessly (other guys were shooting different ammo and had no issues either), replacements are $27 so don't lose it. The front sling attachment is molded in- it fits a standard Claw sling with no issue but not a Harris bipod at least that I could figure out. Probably need to drill a standard swivel stud in somehow.

Overall- Couldn't be more pleased and I'm not sure you can beat that bang for the buck (under $500 total). Definitely want to tinker with bipod attachment, trigger pull and some different ammo to see just how accurate this rifle can get. This rifle might well push my Remington 700 .270 I bought before the season as my 'all purpose' rifle, out of the safe!!
