  1. To finish, like I said I have 500 dollers in Elk points and 2 behind max ,so I will never get a premium hunt there. Plus tag cost travel, and motel or campingand missed work its $3000 hunt unguided in a non trophy unit. Just saying. If Your rich no problem. 75% of the Guys on here could not do it......BOB!

It's definitely disheartening, especially for someone late to the game. I'm 34 and have only starting building points across the west about 4 years ago. BC of the non-res changes in AZ I can swing for the fences each year as the points build up. The real question is do I try to hold out for the outside chance or just draw a mid-tier hunt every few years across the states I'm applying in. Which in reality is still going to be an amazing hunt compared to my options now that Ive left active duty and put down roots in TX.

Like you said- the mandatory annual licenses and cost of points does really stack up. This is the first year I'm tracking cost in every state for every point, fee, license.

Hope WYO treats us all well this fall!!!

  2. I have a McMillan Edge Game Scout that I'm a big fan of. In a smaller profile you can get to the 28-30oz range I'm sure, especially depending on what recoil pad you go with. I had a take off BC that came off a 700 Mountain SS- the barrel channel was extremely narrow and would probably have to be opened up for even a normal sporter contour. With the McM Edge you can get them inlet for up to a Proof.

  3.

So she is almost done!! 75gr Amax, 80gr ELDM and 90gr Sierras are on hand.

To make this a true replica I need to get the bolt jeweled. Anyone have a recommendation where I can send it off to?

Jon Trammel in Breckenridge,Texas does it all. Excellent accuracy smith, phone:254-559-3455. When you fireform seat the bullets well into the lands and work with the bottom load in your reloading book for a standard 22/250. Do two fireforms before working on full loads. I found best accuracy in mine seated into lands at .010". Again I was shooting single shot.

I will keep him in mind for the future-- bolt will be headed off to Kampfeld for the jeweling. Picking up some Lapua brass this weekend as well to start loading the fireforming rounds.

  4. Headed over to watch the Day 3 festivities today with a buddy who scored some tickets! Should be an interesting experience. If it's a bust then it gets me to the side of town where my gun shop and Cabelas is!

  5. Shotgun would be typical weapon of choice. Some states allow rifles. Archery is generally permitted everywhere.

In the east and south turkey gun trend towards short and compact--- long hikes, tight woods and spending alot of time rested on your knee. I've used 12ga 3 1/2 down to 20ga 2 3/4". Get the bird within range and they will do the trick. I prefer federal heavyweight #6 or hevi-shot #6 for pattern density. I've also had good results (on the pattern board and on birds) with the Winchester Longbeard XR in 12ga.

  6. .50 cal 350gr TC Maxi-Hunter-- Oklahoma whitetail buck, 78 yard shot, hit just behind near shoulder, broke one rib, broke offside shoulder, found under the skin. Shot from a home made CVA Deer Hunter percussion kit gun.

All my reloading kit is packed but I will get a weight on it. You can see where the shoulder bone sheared off some of the lead (2nd photo).

  7. I always give the Smith a dummy round taking into account magazine constraints and a bit of flexibility to shoot other bullets if the want or need arises...

I'd have to go look at old notes but a factory 700 action/mag is perfect for the .22-250 Ackley....

If you find anything it would be great to see how you went about your build.

If my math is any good there shouldn't be an issue getting the heavier bullets to mag length if they are seated down to neck/shoulder or slightly further in.

  8. Mine was a faux Remington 700 Ti. 22" 1-8" Pac-Nor, mountain rifle contour dupe. It was a backpack rifle.

    I throated it for 80 Berger's to kiss. I was running 80 Berger's at 3,250 from the 22"...

Best powders were in the RL-19 or so burn range..

Killed coyotes forming brass, killed all with formed...

Killed my best coues buck at about 500 yards with said load. Dead on feet.

Great cartridge, fun to shoot, great bullet choices...

How deep were those Bergers seated into the case?

The one print I've seen showed a throat (W measurement on the print) of 2.1067- that was measured from the rear of the case as the 'datum'?

If you want to specify a longer throat how is that accomplished? (Curiosity is getting the best of me). Is the smith taking a dummy round for measurements and then reamer the chamber and then ream a longer throat?

  9. Any idea on your CBTO for that 80gr?

Mine was a Savage model 11 vt, a heavy barrel model only available from Dick's sporting goods. I had just bought it for a cheap coyote killer and hadn't intended to build on it but when I sighted it in I discovered it had a bent barrel. Ratter than dealing with Savage I decided I should just fix it up the way I wanted it anyway.
I ordered a m40 Bell & Carlson, and a Douglas air gauge 26" 1/7 twist rem varmint contour barrel. Rather than deal with the feeding issues mentioned above I ordered several Savage magazines intended for a 6.5 Creedmoor. The Creedmoor and 22-250 Ai have identical case taper and just a few degrees difference in shoulder angle. Just switched magazines when going from fire forming loads to AI loads and never had any issues.
Don't remember how the rifle was throated but I know a 53gr V-Max could still be seated into the lands for fire forming. The pic I've attached is a 80 gr Berger VLD seated .005 off the lands next to a 55 gr Hornady factory 22-250 load.attachicon.gifIMG_20160921_165541017.jpg

  10. I've had experience with both the 22/250AI and the 6mmAI. Both had feeding problems with feeding that big square 40 degree shoulder cartridge. I found that a long action worked better for both cartridges and shooting single shot eliminated those feeding problems. I would give the 6mmAI the edge especially if you're going to shoot the 90's. The slow burning powders needed to propel those long heavy bullets really take up the volume in the case. A 7 twist is what I shot with the 90 grain Bergers. Be sure the reamer has the necessary throat length to shoot heavys otherwise you'll be sinking those long bullets way past the shoulder/neck junction and occupying valuable powder capacity. I used a reamer in both with a .120" freebore. Krieger still buys the best barrel steel on the market so I would choose their barrel over the other two. Having shot many years out of a south Texas blind, I never found a need for a repeater. A single shot always did the job!

Do you have a copy of the print you could email to me?

What rifle / action / magazine combo were you using when you had feeding problems? Did you try any aftermarket followers? My RUM was finicky but a Wyatt's follower solved the problem.

DSE or Big/Bust did you guys have specifics on your chamber set up in your 22-250ai??
