    Best Ground Blind?

Have a primos double bull and it has been great so far. Depending on your price range take a look at Roger's Sporting Goods. They are mainly duck hunting gear but sell lots of ground blinds including the 'generic' double bulls and others!!

Any one use a tree stand?

hookedoncoues --- I have hunted extensively from treestands in the eastern US (KY, GA, NC) and I have rifle hunted Coues from the ground. After seeing the terrain and trees in AZ I would probably opt for a lock-on model stand and use climbing sticks. This will open the aperture of trees available, as climbing stands like the Summit Viper require a straight trunk. I would use a bike lock to secure the stand to the tree and then you can take your sticks with you or just take the bottom two sticks and I've found that will keep your stand from 'walking' away. I have 2 of the Millenium M25 lock ons. Very lightweight but solid and they have a very generous platform size. You can pick them up on sale for around $80 a piece. They don't have a rail or back rest but they are comfortable and PERFECT for bowhunting. I leave my 2 up all season and have had no durability issues. If you do find a tree you can climb then I would recommend the Summit Open Shot. Very comfortable, open design and lightweight. Good luck!!

    Online Draw Issue

Still having issues... trying to apply as a group and it will only allow 2 people to be entered as the 'party' every time we try to input info for the 3rd person it says "You are already on the application". Doesn't matter which order we input the info. IE-- we put in Hunter A, B and it won't let us put in C. Or C then B and we can't put in A. Very frustrating. Called AZGFD and got the same crypt keeper, who said she would advise them of the issue and to keep trying. If no luck then call back tomorrow.

    issue with 2016 hunting license

They were having lots of issues online it seemed. My profile on the AZGFD website did not reflect that I even possessed a license and then it showed I have a deer pref point... which I do not... but I wouldn't have minded that part staying as is!!!

    New Regs are posted

Sneaker- Maybe I am mis-interpreting; I thought the new system actually increased the chances for low point holders both resident and non-resident. I was under the impression that previously 10% of total tags went to non-resident with highest pref point totals... now that is only 5% and the other 5% go into the random draw which is competed for by both residents and non-residents. ie: 100 tags available, normally 10 go to non-resident high pref point holders... now only 5 do (which is why people are pissed) and the other 5 go into the random draw where anyone with any points could draw them including residents. This means the # of tags that low point resident can draw actually increases. What it really means is that low point non-residents, we now have a crack at those 5 tags in the random draw when normally it would be literally impossible to have drawn that area because all 10 NR tags were gone before the random draw. Can anyone confirm/deny?

"The draw" help a new non resident hunter out

Lamrith--- Looks like we are chasing the same strategy!!! I'm starting to put in for elk in AZ too. Mainly just to build points but I've done a lot of research to figure out how to maximize my chances and I think it boils down to a few things. 1. We (non-residents) now have the opportunity to draw tags in the random draw for the top areas when normally the 10% non-resident cap would have been met by the highest point holding non-resident hunters. It sucks for them because now it means more years of them applying to guarantee a tag and up to 5% of the NR can draw without even having any preference points... BUT those tags are fair game to residents also in the overall random draw. 2. For a group application this limits where you can apply-- otherwise you only guarantee yourself a preference point. If you have a party of 4 and all will be considered non-resident then the area and hunt you are applying for must have at least 80 tags available. Meaning no more than 8 tags (10%) will be given to NR... of that 4 are guaranteed to the highest point holders and MAYBE 4 will be allocated in the random draw to non-residents, but the residents can draw those tags as well. You have to win the lottery to have your application drawn while ALL 4 non-resident random draw tags are available. If you are drawn and the NR quota is reached or there isn't enough tags for everyone on the app (ie- there were only 2 tags for NR left) then you get passed over and get a point for that year. 3. This means that the quality hunts in specific units you are looking for might be impossible from the get go, and you will technically have better odds applying in smaller groups as non-residents and this will open the aperture of hunts to apply for. Lemme know what yall end up doing!! We are going to start swinging for the fences this year by applying for only one unit/hunt and then we get a pref point otherwise. In the event we hit the elk powerball then we will drop everything else for that season and get to business on the hunt of lifetime. Otherwise we wait and wait.

    Light Weight Deer Gun?

Not sure what your budget might be but besides the T3 lite I think you might want to look at the new Legendary Arms Works rifles-- They make two models (Closer and Professional) that will fit your bill. Custom stock, timney trigger, bedded, etc. Retailing for $1500 if you can find them. My gun store has a 6.5CM that almost followed me home....

New rifle caliber choice? You tell me!

Just had this discussion at work!! I love my 6.5x284 and I had my 7mm rebarreled to .338WM to cover both ends of the spectrum (long range, mid size game and mid range, large game). However, I have 3 friends all with .300RUM and they've harvested everything from Coues, Caribou, Bear and even Moose. My next build will be long range/large game and will be a .300RUM.

    First "deer"" hunt in Arizona

AHunter119-- You've found the best resource on the web. Strongly recommend wearing out the 'search' function for the areas you intend to hunt. I hunted AZ for the first time this year and followed threads back years and years researching my drawn unit because all the questions have been asked before! Good luck to you, stay active on the forum!

    THANKS VETERANS

IA Born-- As you know the Army is a small small place and those who were members of the Herd are found far and wide. My wife's Grandfather was a Vietnam 173rd Vet as well. A very tight knit group. For another small world story, I was in getting an MRI and a gentlemen asked how I liked the 'outfit' in Italy. Turns out he was there as replacement soldier... CSM(ret) Sneed who did 4 tours in Vietnam with 3/503 then A/2-503 and 30 years and 500 jumps of airborne service later retired as a Command Sergeant Major... his commander?? None other than the father of my Company Commander when I was there. Love it!! Battle Hard, The Rock, Sky Soldiers!

    THANKS VETERANS

IA Born--- Great pics and write up. The 173rd is an amazing unit with a rich history that continues today. The annual reunions and unofficial get togethers are some of the best veterans events that I have ever been to and glad to have been a part of such an amazing unit! Newbie Success!!!! (Pic Heavy)

This is why CWT is the best forum I've been on. Nothing but great feedback from great members! That buck is def gonna go on the wall and it will be a great story when guys ask. Looking forward to doing it all again. I've sat in my treestand twice since getting home to KY and it's just not the same staring at 100 yards of woods compared to literally miles of terrain. lamrith-- Very different hunts!! but I can't imagine how things would have gone if we didn't see those bucks on that first evening. It seems that early October hunt just gets more difficult the later it gets. Need to give it a whirl again next year!
