    A 2022 6A elk hunting saga

Be sure to practice In every possible shooting position imaginable. I missed a bull 2 years ago at a mere 27 yards while hunting in a brush blind near a wallow. Bull came in while I was laying flat on my back during a time I wasn’t expecting elk. I sat upright, drew (it’s difficult while sitting), turned my body 90 degrees to the right to shoot and let one fly right under him. 😮

The last 10 days have been hot in SW Colorado but the temps drop Saturday for the muzzleloader bull opener. Hoping this weather pattern gets them going. Leaving tomorrow morning

  7. I’m getting rid of a few muzzleloaders, too many in the safe. Both are shooters but not safe queens. 1. Thompson Center Renegade, 54 cal, Williams fiber optic sights, Mag Spark 209 primer ignition, standard nipple and Remington #11 caps if you want to change back, almost full bottle of Pyrodex RS, 1 full box of 50, 485 grain No Excuses lead bullets. Rifle is older, external metal is rubbed but overall good condition. Good shooter. $225 OBO 2. CVA Optima Magnum, .50 cal, 3-9 Weaver scope, extra breech plug, 2 full boxes of 20 Hornady Great Plains 385 grain bullets, 22 Pyrodex pellets. Recoil pad was torn off at some point and replaced with a slip on. rifle is a good shooter but well used would make a decent backup or primary. $125 OBO FTF cash, trades considered, I live in Ahwatukee near the 202 freeway 602 5one2-five345 text preferred or pm here

    Draw results

I saw an exceptional amount of birds in 12AW last November
  9. Florencia is good, decent bar to sit at whlile waiting
  10. Hunting Colorado so no optics, sabots or pellets. I don’t know my velocity, don’t really care I’m not shooting over 100. Couldn’t find any .54 Buffalo Bullets so I picked up some No Excuses 485 grain slugs. 70 grains of 777 is pretty accurate out to 75-100 yards out of my Thompson Center Renegade. I’ll be hunting dark timber interspersed with small marshy meadows and doubt that a bull would function very well after getting hit with one. My backup rifle is a .50 cal CVA Optima, 85 grains of 777, 300 grain power belt, or 385 grain Hornady Great Plains. 100-125 yards.

I’m scouting the unit where I have a September ML tag, beautiful country, rugged and steep. All the elk I’m seeing are either on private or 10,500 and up. Tons of bear sign so I’ll be buying the $100 add on tag. Sharing a few pics, arrow pointed to where I’m seeing elk above tree line, few others just under. Hiking is tough, I have a cabin at around 8800 but once you hit 10K to hike things change quite a bit. i got back to the truck and a marmot was under the hood chewing on the firewall which was spooky when I popped the hood. Fortunately no wiring.

Cards are being hit! Who's going hunting?

Consider bringing/renting a satellite phone out there. I hunted/camped solo in my tent for 5 days on the late hunt last year before my son arrived and the ability to make a call from anywhere gave me peace of mind. I was able to find a spot to camp where I got AT and T service within 100 yards of my tent. Fun hunt, lots of mature bucks daily, just watch out for all the speeding taco trucks.

Headed back out this morning after several days of rain. Not much to see other than some fresh beds, couple cow elk and deer on the trail cam, and this buck that I walked up on. Anyone recognize the peak? SW Colorado IMG_3402.MOV

I’ve been going out there for years and this was the first time I’ve had one in the engine compartment. They can do some damage

Buffalo Bullets are great, think they stopped making them? Same, wish they were .54
