Take care of the meat guys!

If you want less gamey tasting meat drop your game in its track and don't hunt the rut ..... and to some degree let the big guy walk by and take the spike .....

    BP

the 1-800-be-alert can sometimes be slow not sure what unit you will be hunting in but if your in the 36's by chance the quick way is to hit the main dispatch for that area at 1(520)761-2565 much faster and much better response times .... If not check at any BP checkpoint and find out from them which number is best or ask an agent out in the field and they should be able to give you what you need to know .....

    Distance

Both posts look like your trying to bait someone into a fight. I'm not interested in arguing I will just give you my opinion. Speed, gravity etc... is only a small part of the equation and is easier controlled/compensated for than buck fever or a buck jumping the string. I'm not interested in getting into a debate about ethics as everyone is different and I feel that I have as much or more respect for the animals I hunt than others, but one thing I find interesting is that a lion doesn't sit there and think, "lets see if I drop off this ledge on that buck, I might not be able to effectively kill it because of that little kicker antler that is going to hinder me catching it by the throat, I guess I will have to pass until that little fawn comes along." IMO a real test of ethics is not how far the shot is, because I can and have missed at under 30 yards, but ethics to me comes into play after you have made a poor shot. What do you do? Look for 5 min and then move on, do you spend time on hands and knees, do you wait a day then come back? What is it that you do? Have you ever seen a deer killed by a lion, or coyotes, a bunch less ethical than a poor shot IMO For me I shoot regularly at 80+ yards Longest kill mule deer 81 yards closest is bull elk at 7 yards I am not going to get in a debate but I must and have to Laugh at someone comparing us hunting big game and ethics to those of predators.... the day I see a Cat or dog setting up a snare trap, using a dead fall, or pulling back a bow string and on the flip side A hunter perched in a tree limb for hours and hours over a game trail to drop down on a big buck and claw it and bite it to death with finger nails and teeth, chase it down on foot and beat in head to head combat .... I may then be convinced it is closer to apples and apples not apples and oranges .... again I must With that being said I give props to the guys that feel they can make high percentage shots at those distances the $$$$$$ , the time spent knowing your weapon, the hours and days of shooting target after target has to be given credit for and as someone who is slowly getting back into archery I Some day would like to say I would have the ability to drop an Elk or even harder a coues at 100+ yards but something tells me I don't think I would not take a shot over 70-80 yards but until then I will stick at 40 or less.... The ethics comes with the confidence of your skills with that weapon and lets face it a couple steps in the right direction at 300 - 400 yards on our rifles can make the difference between a miss or a misplaced shot as well and we won't even talk about the rapid fire of bullets often slung out on fast moving game at similar as well as much shorter distances ..... Just MHO

    36B ??? Not E-scouting

+1 .... be ready for a bit of hunting pressure that first weekend but if you are staying the whole time hunting traffic will be minimal after sunday

    reload advice!!

I agree with moving away from the Ballistic tips (seen a few coues damaged a little too much ) .... I would not worry to much on going to a lighter bullet just one that will will hold its weight and expand well ..... Look at the 140 gr Swift scirroco 2's (over 70% weight retention and good expansion ) or Nosler Accubonds believe the maintain about 60 - 65%

    DIRTBAG ARCHERY ELK HUNTER

I am thinking dingleberry and mason are one and the same or best of buds ....... either way only a moron would look at my post and think I said anything about communal property ...... I clearly stated that you make a calculated risk when you put your cams out and if the risk is worth it for you have fun but don't go around crying when things did not go the way you liked them to.... I am not condoning trashing or stealing any persons property.... but the sad reality is that too many out there did not learn the same lessons that myself and many others learned about respecting others and their property .... Now armed with this knowledge make a calculated choice ... mine is not to use them.... Love how people try to spin everything to make an argument seem more valid from their point of view .... comparing quads and parked vehicles or long range shooting to the use a game cameras... WOW .... here is a big difference for you dingleberry ..... Steal or take a joyride in another persons rhino, quad or truck and it is a felony ..... Shut off someones trail cam and no law is being broken and if it was missing well try to build a case on leaving (abandoning) a camera in the middle of nowhere ..... If you feel you need to keep crying let someone call you a WAMBULANCE
  11. Str8Shot

    ugh!

For an extra 2k you can rent the tracking device to pinpoint you on the microchip implanted during the tagging process .... that of course is a joke but probably the next logical progression for canned shootouts (can't call it hunting)

Take care of the meat guys!

I'm with the Claw and Coues diehard. I have not cleaned an animal in years. I am slow, but I can completely bone out a coues deer in 45 minutes. I do bring the back leg bones for the dog. I think a good set of directions is on a sticky on one of the main threads. The hanging thing is probably a pride thing. In addition to that it is probably a that is how 'Granddad did it" mentality. It would be perfectly fine to hang an animal though on cool days not above 60 with cold nights if it is skinned of coarse. WHen is the last time we had a cool early hunt down south. Honestly I can't remember one this decade. Bob The last few days of the early hunt in 36b was plenty cold .... We brought our deer back after dark they hung til morning with it getting to the low 30's over night ... But they were down and headed to be processed before the sun broke the hills behind camp .... that being said it did not get above 60 that day and much cooler with the wind chills and the following two days barley broke 52 degrees amazing what a 30 degree temp drop does to you (and the deer) when it happens that quick .... BRISK BABY ... To bad it only lasted a few days and you guys after us got stuck with the heat again

    DIRTBAG ARCHERY ELK HUNTER

Lets see .... Hmmmmm ??? #1 there is no invasion of privacy you are on public land no different than a public street or sidewalk so that argument does not fly #2 there is no inherent right to said use of public property by leaving personal property behind (i.e. cam ,blind,treestand,ect..ect) #3 the hunters have the right to hunt unobstructed and if camera was deemed by the hunter as an obstruction and turning it off was all he needed then be thankful it was left in tack and not stolen or damaged.... (not such a dirtbag) #4 there is no such thing as a secret hunting spot just very low pressured spots and maybe knowing/getting to know the few others that may know and hunt such shared areas is much more valuable information than a few pictures will ever give.... #5 It is your choice to leave personal property out in the middle of nowhere hoping to give yourself a leg up on mother nature and in doing so you now need to calculate in Human nature .... Stealing or breaking someone's personal property is never right but the reality of it is only a percent of people live by ethical behaviors these days and the rest are the reasons for post of things gone missing out in the field .... That is the risk YOU take ... that is personally why I do not use Cams I am not that trusting #6 thank the guys for not stealing your camera and have a great rest of the hunting season

    Kofa input

SO if it were 1 tree hugging , electric car driving, I wanna be green but I actually have no clue about how an ecosystem works Hiker being turned into LION fodder each week I Doubt it would take very long for the lion/lions to be purged from the range .... Maybe they just need to get a little taste of human meat , then be rounded up and sent to California in the green suburbs to do a little population control on the misguided souls who think that in a biological ecosystem hunting is not part of the process ..... And if we the true top predator do not control other top predators like the lions it will only be a matter of time before the handful of Human Attacks by mountain lions each year becomes more like a weekly ritual ..... especially if they realize how much easier the ones without guns are to get over Deer ,Pigs, and Sheep

    GIANT MOOSE....

Don't those Moose up there run around With BABE ??? You know Paul Bunyan's Giant Blue Ox .....

What Scope and power do you like?

Simple Hunter you might want to Start doing Reloads for your 300RUM and get those cost down to $ .80 - $1.20 a round..... I still limit my Shots but it is nice to know I am not spending that $50 - $65 a Box for Ammo.... As Far as Scopes I think most post here tell you that a little more magnification is always good ..... Brand is a preference ..... Your Zeiss, Swaro, and some other high end scopes may get you a little extra shooting time 10- 15 minutes , and any system is only as good as its weakest link ( usually in this case our Eye's) .... Find one that you like .... Put the time in at the range to know it .... and Have confidence in Shooting with it .... I think that is the one common here among these guys They All Have confidence in the Gun and Scope they are using and have the knowledge of their own complete systems to Do so.....

    Lion Kill

I have seen deer scouting not far from where a fresh lion kill had been drug off into the thick .... pools of fresh wet blood and nothing else but some hair ..... I was always under the impression that if there was anything left after the first feeding that the cats stash the rest of the carcass to feed upon later ....

    The giant spike

Wow... Some spike there!!! One like that is so rare to see that he would be a Taker even in a group of 4x4 typical bucks not your average everyday Spike that is for sure... Nice Job
  19. Str8Shot

    UDA'S

So what would bring you to that conclusion... Do you think that when 1 UDA in a group gives up they all do? I would think they leave his or her lonely butt behind ...... Not to mention All the Mules I have ever spotted were not close to any high traveled roads they were way back in the thick ruff stuff that is away from the major roads .... Either way BP should be called
  20. My brother and I scored our Bud's Big Fork (2x2 with eye guards) That was taken out of 36b on the early hunt this year along with a smaller frame 3x2 and a Spike.... This guy was one of the largest bodied Coues I have ever seen as well as the Guy who has been butchering these little guys up for the last 20+ years .... He easily weighed 110 lbs. dressed out and made His maker and our other friend know it as they packed him out over some fun terrain .... He gross scores at 94 6/8

    Ray's 36b Big Fork Scored

Casey, I NEED to see that buck. PM's are fine Thanks Amanda, I'd be interested to hear what you find out. Maybe I'll start a new thread. Coues Sniper, Many years ago a good freind and hunting buddy shot a MONSTER 2ptr! This buck was officially measured by a B&C measurer at 111 1/8" net with a gross score of 114 and some change. Although he was measured I dont beleive he ever entered it. This deer has 20 inch beams--10 inch G2--5 inch eyeguards with a 17 inch inside spread. Unfortunatly I dont have any photos. I'll try to hunt one down. Jim Sounds like a dream deer Jim. Thanks for trying to find a picture for me, I'd really like to see that. Kevin Kevin, When I walked up to that buck on the ground it was very EYE OPENING!!!! I knew he was BIG in the binos! Just not that BIG!! Jim I would Love to See a Pic of that Monster

A Worthless Waste of Hunting Gear

Hearing all this and I have to put up the cure for so many things like that blown out boot thing . .... every camp and pack should have some to take care of the mishaps on the hunt from fixing boots to tents and I have even heard of Gun Stocks broke in half from being dropped on the trail and the magic of duct tape in the pack let em fix it and use it with a kill the same day .... I know I am going against the grain but anything that Macgyver can use is a good thing to have

    Ray's 36b Big Fork Scored

http://www.coueswhitetail.com/how_to_score..._Coues_deer.htm Look under measuring circumference On Coues as all whitetail deer you allways have 4 circumference measurments regardless the # of points if there is not a third point then the measurement is taken half way between the second point and the tip of the main beam and C3 and C4 are given the same value .....
