    Mule Deer in January

Pretty much all the Northern units are closed during the January hunt including the 3's. 4a, & B have a couple weeks open but your best bet if you are planning on going somewhat north is 22,23,& 27 ... It usually is not very hard to find good mule deer in any of the open units in January ... IMHO no need to waste a bunch of gas that time of year looking for big trees to put a stand in ... Just stay close and spot and stalk...

    Gunna Go Postal!

No amount of work or expense gives anyone exclusive rights to any spot in OUR public forests. The notion that a person baiting and/ or just leaving a cam close to a tank feels his rights to pictures are greater than those of a hunters during an active hunt is ludicrous. I see no issue with the guy making your cam inoperable while he was actively hunting that spot. Lets face it they make enough sound and depending on the amount of overcast the flash could be an issue during the day ( low light day pics use flash not IR). He was wrong in leaving it that way once he was done with the spot, just as you were wrong with your actions of revenge. I feel that this rant is based on an Idea that your cams have exclusivity over the actual hunter in that spot (and that was not you) you talk of Sabotage when your actions are no different. You then Rant as your actions should be defended, in my opinion they should not. If you have an issue with a specific person or even six people, man up and work it out over a cold beer. No one should come into this kind of forum looking for validation for being a self centered jerk.

    Weather effect

I have always been told and witness to the fact that the temperature will not move them much unless there is not enough exposed vegetation for those big bodies to keep fueled up. Once the snow gets deep and starts hard packing over the grass ... start looking for lower surrounding areas with good vegetation still exposed. Sometimes you don't have to go very far. What hunt and unit ?

    what would you do?

I personally think that many hunters that use blinds and tree stands get their panties bunched up to easy. If your doing it right the whole point is to be hard to see. Often this means another hunter is not going to see you until he is right on top of you. Also with the practice of guys setting up multiple Blinds and stands and leaving them. It is becoming a more common practice for hunters to check out and make sure it is an occupied blind. Nothing like hiking into a spring and all the sudden hearing a pissed off quiet tone from 15 - 20 feet in the air questioning you why you did not see he was hunting this spot. Well Mr. tree stand man, The last time I looked I had not found any deer or elk up in them trees So my eyes are focused more on the ground. Again 150 yards in a forest is quiet a distance and sound does not travel upwind that well especially if it is over 20 MPH. From the way I read it was that this guy came in from another direction and did not go right to the water. Know if you tell me that he came in right on the water, seen you hunting your blind then moved to the right upwind 150 yards, I may feel you have a right to be upset. If the guy came in 150 yards to your right and never approached the water hole or immediate area then that is just something you have to deal with and in no way makes that hunter a disrespectful SOB. If you hunt close to water in Arizona you better be prepared to have some interruptions. That is just the way it is an. You made your Blind Now you have to sit in it !

    what would you do?

Hidden water holes in our public forests. I guess if someone besides you set up a cam they are not all that hidden
  8. Str8Shot

    what would you do?

If he knows your there then it is just a lack of respect. However, 150 yards depending on the density of cover and trees is it possible he did not see you. Not being in a blind and just sitting still I have had hunters come in almost right on top of me from a direction they did not see me until they were right there. If he was upwind at that distance it is very possible your whistle nor cow calls even caught his attention. If you were right on the water and he was in a pinch point or overlooking a trail into the hole then he may not have seen you there. I would Sit it out and try to meet up with him when leaving the spot at dusk to ask the questions and find away that tomorrow it does not happen again. A pissing match at 5:30 6:00 pm is not going to help you or him.

    Unit 33 suggestions

Has anyone actually come across any animal rights people during a hunt trying to mess it . I see the occasional weekend warrior or at worst a group of Storm troopers tearing up the trails with their quads. I find the fear of and all the blaming for missing cams on Antis pretty amusing. Maybe someday one will jump between me and my target and I can put the Law to good use but til then I don't see the worry. Post what you want to post .
  13. I must say I had a great laugh this weekend at what I seen tacked on a National forest sign. It was up where I was assisting my bro on his archery hunt. I will not disclose the exact location, but... ... Four miles from a major state highway at the intersection of 3 very traveled Forest roads was tacked a flyer. On the top in Large print was CAMERA THIEF !!!! Not sure if it was posted by anyone here, but man seeing that made me laugh almost to tears. Sorry(but not really) to the guy that lost your bait (TROPHY ROCK) and your camera, but thanks for the entertainment this windy weekend. I snapped a picture of the flyer but will have to wait for my bro to put it up.

    Someone lose their Trophy Rock?

Most probably don't care as long as everybody involved isn't jackass about it. I am guessing it doesn't really crank your chain when you find somebody already in your favorite glassing spot or sneekin spot or whatever type of spot you prefer to hunt that is naturally laying there untouched by human scent or hand. You are making it sound like you are going to intentionally ruin somebody elses plan just because you don't agree with the way they have chosen to hunt. And if you did choose to slip into somebody's already exisiting blind that was sitting over bait and kill his monster he had been seeing on his cheating trail cams all year long then you would have lowered yourself to sub standard type of hunting which would diminish the trophy of the monster buck. I have never sat a blind, or hunted over bait or treestand. Mostly just glassing and busting brush hoping to bump into something with antlers. Reminds me of a elk hunt in 3A over at the tree farms, we had done some scouting and thought we had it all figured out until WHAM...opening morning, people crawling all over the place in ATV, 4X4 on foot...you name it. Was I mad, heck yeah.....did I have the right to be mad.......not really, they all had the same tag. So what did I do........went somewhere else............. If I see a tank I want to sit and it is unoccupied, I am gonna sit it. If I see a natural rock mineral area I want to sit and it is unoccupied I am gonna sit it. If I find a block of salt sitting out there and nobody is hovering over it and I want to sit and watch it grow moss, I am gonna sit it. If I wanna go tromping through your favorite glassing, sneeking area and I don't see anybody that I am going to be disrupting.....I am gonna go tromping.... Guess just depends on how jackass I wanna be about it...... What assumptions! My comment was stating, regardless of what a person is doing out in the middle of a public forest it is still public land. Was I a little upset on opening morning to see a guy perched on a ridge over looking the bed of 115" + coues I had watched use this spot for a few weeks including the day before the hunt. heck yeah I was pissed, but not at him. I was pissed at myself and moved on knowing plenty of other spots were around that would not be getting attention. A person using bait can have effects on every type of species within a couple of miles of the spot. If I find that this hunters actions are having an impact on the games behavior and where they are located then how is that messing with his hunt. My point is when I am scouting if I find that someone is baiting in the area I plan on finding out where and how it is effecting the movement of the game. That my friend is called hunting. So as I stated if some one is serving up snacks in the middle of the forest thinking they are creating a honey hole they still need to remember it is still public land. I am not going to steal his bait or mess with his cams. I just stated that I hope to drop a deer in his spot and leave him some entrails next to his Trophy rock. p.s. Lark, your posts are always good for a laugh... Thanks for keeping the humor alive here

180+ Coues Sheds --- You better sit down before you look!

Holy mother of Mary ... those are sick in the best way! Showing off the pics of these monsters from the res could be some great marketing if they ever decide to let White man hunt deer on the Res.

    Someone lose their Trophy Rock?

Yes stealing personal belongings regardless of where you find them is the action of worthless scum sucking individuals. However ... I find someones bait Just to make a statement I may just sneak in a steal the Honey hole a few hours early on opening day. This is public land and just placing cams and especially putting out bait does not entitle any individual to feel the spot is theirs. an empty blind 2 hours before sun up is an empty blind and the spot is open. An empty baited honey hole 2 hours before sun up is still first come first serve. Hope those of you that do bait realize this and respect this as still public land.

    Someone lose their Trophy Rock?

It amazes me all the assumptions that fly through the digital data stream of the internet. I think the guy was paid by Obama himself to steal the Trophy rock and camera .... It is an individual that is pretty worthless regardless if he is a tree huger, a guide,a weekend hiker, or just Joe hunter. While I do not approve of anyone taking something that does not belong to them, I still find it funny. I am sure it is my personal bias against guys who use bait. Something tells me the guy is putting out a trophy rock to try to get better horn not just a few pictures, so please do not try to defend it as the addiction to just using trail cameras.

    Someone lose their Trophy Rock?

Not so sure I would want my white azz showing up in some trail cam contest in the non coues funny category. on a serious note ... with the help of his billboard, I do not think it will be to hard to find any of his spots in this area. p.s. Lark you know he probably has pictures of his accomplices too ... The construction worker, police officer, and that Indian chief

    Someone lose their Trophy Rock?

I just plan on finding this guys spots... Then dropping a toad of a buck right there and gutting it all in front of his camera while using his new Trophy rock to lay my knife on during the process

    Someone lose their Trophy Rock?

Sorry for the delay... pretty certain that since this was only posted one place the brilliant hunter that lost his bait was telling the rest of the world if you look around in this general area you will find more of my baiting spots. Maybe he should have thought about it harder before saying hey this way to my honey hole.

Yes and Yes.... new tag and license on January 1 2011 is needed

Hows your archery hunt going ?

100% agree ... 90 + % of water holes and tanks in AZ are published and have roads that run right to or by them. If you are hunting that close to the road the only one you should be cussing is yourself. We were in the cool country the last couple weekends and the Storm Troopers ( that is what my dad calls the big groups of recreational drivers ) were all over the place. Just something you have to deal with on public lands.

    blinds and respect

Not being one for using cams or bait, but it your case just move it. look for the heaviest signs of ingress and egress into this spot .... look at surrounding landscape for best possible corridors to bedding areas... look for saddles on any ridges close to the area .... Then move your cam up away from the dinner table he has most likely set and catch them in the cutoff... pay attention to position of the camera so you understand the direction of movement, and if you can find the right corridors set up opening morning catching them between their nighttime buffet table and their bedding area ... But for me I would just save the money and the drama of Uncle Jessie and his clan of mineral lick thieves by not putting one up.
