Call me old school but when did a 160 buck become unworthy? I have shot Bucks in Kaibab much smaller than that. Truth is if you want a 200" buck start playing the strip game or late Kaibab. This are the only hunts with a fairly reasonable chance at that kind of animal. Quality wise, 3c is a small step down from Kaibab but there's a lot of nice bucks there and a few monsters coming in and out of the res.

And those elk got a ridiculous amount of pressure in the archery hunt! That part was not fun.

Spring hunting is the best! My favorite time is the earlier season as I find more birds talking then. However, sometimes they'll still be going great late too. I like to run and gun covering as much ground as possible while calling every 50-150 yards depending on terrain or wind conditions. The trick here is to call close to cover because every now and then they will gobble from close and come running! Once you get in an area that had a lot of sign,etc. it's not a bad idea to slow it down and set up a couple of decoys and call. Spend some time (sometime all day) if you think you've got a busy spot. Can't speak for the muzzleloader seasons much. But..... The early Kaibab hunt can be a fairly tough hunt. If you hunt hard for several days you should be able to shoot a mature buck. The nice thing is you could bump into a monster! Most of the deer shot are spikes and two points though. I seem to see nice mature 4x4's alms it every time I take a short drive in 3c. I've seen bucks up to 180-190 there in recent years.

Northern end mostly. While scouting in the Summer they were bunched up In a few big herds. Most broke up around the start of the archery hunt but we got into a huge herd on opening morning with several satellite Bulls. Tough to get close in that country though.

I was fortunate enough to help a friend on his hunt in 10 during the archery hunt. It was my first go at elk here. We saw a crazy number of elk. Almost every sitting we saw elk everywhere we looked. I, too, am surprised by the number of cow permits they have been issuing but it's hard to believe that overall numbers of elk are down from what is saw. We saw herds of 100+ just before the rut kicked in. I did see way too much pressure on the hunt than what I'd prefer to. We had two hunts messed up by other hunters.

March 20th has been the day for the last two years..... It's right around the corner!

Well I'm hoping that quite a few people took the bait and went with 1,10 or 23 instead of the archery hunt in 9. It would sure help me out! I'm just guessing that the 25 muzzy hunters won't take out all of the big bulls in the entire unit. That's laughable. Maybe 4 or 5. Just to be on the safe side, I put in for the muzzy hunt first. The archery hunt dates will be great for the rut I believe.
