    Two-way Radios

I was wondering if any of you have used two-way radios that you would recommend? Any limitations? Have been researching but curious about in the field, actual use. Thank you

    Two-way Radios

Sorry if this is a basic question, but does ham radio get better service from canyon to canyon(or when not in line of sight)? I hunt areas that tend to be fairly steep and there are times that normal walkies do not work very well. Also, I have not used Ham radios before, do they tend to give a lot of feedback or is it clear when talking? (Sound similar to regular two-way radio?)

    Two-way Radios

Thank you, Adicted. Which one do you have 650, 650t, or 655t? Also had any issues with them sharing positions, etc?
  5. My new good luck bow! I typically do not like to post pictures, but feel this is important. Here are some pictures of the first Elk I have taken in my life (Saturday 9-19-15), this PSE bow strapped behind me carrying out the rack (sorry it's blurry but the guy taking the picture needs glasses), and the first shot I tried at 120 yards with this bow. This bow has rapidly become my favorite; Shoots lights out. I hope all is well with you Jared. I saw the last post was awhile ago and haven't heard if the final results have come back yet.
  6. Hi. Typically I hunt during the winter, so temperatures are generally not a concern. This year I have a hunt in September in an area where daytime temps average 82 degrees and evening temps are around 59 degrees. This hunt is for elk, but the question is for all game. How do you keep the meat from spoiling in these temperatures while you pack out the meat in multiple trips? How long is too long to be out at those temps? What I have read so far is: 1. Store meat hanging from tree on Northside of hill, mountain, canyon, in the shade. 2. Cover with breathable cloth (game bag/pillow cases, etc.) 3. Gutless harvest 4. Spray with either citrus juice or meatsvr? If this question has been asked before, I apologize, just wanted to know what options are available to start preparing for the trip.

    Preventing Game Meat from Spoiling

Agreed, pepper does work. I'm just not used to hunting at a time of the year that has flies. The other thing to mention was within an hour of taking the elk we had 5-6 buzzards and 2-3 Ravens circling overhead.

    Preventing Game Meat from Spoiling

Thank you to those that responded. I was able to harvest an Elk two days ago (2+ miles away from a road) and was able to save all of the meat with some of your recommendations. Wish you all a great year of hunting. (I am still shocked how fast flies came in while we were harvesting).

    Backpacking in border units?

I have solo hunted/hiked down south for about 4 years. In the time I have been down there I have had many encounters (neutral and negative), seen interesting things happening from afar and heard many stories from other hunters of what they have seen. In a twisted way it does add to the excitement/experience. A plus is that it is some of the most beautiful country I have ever been in. You hike in half a mile and you eliminate 90+% of the hunters and do get to have a lot of opportunities for deer. If you do decide to hunt down there I would recommend talking to some of the local people and the local authorities as it tends to paint a whole picture this way. List of items I do not leave my car without: 1. SPOT satellite emergency beacon (not a lot of cell phone service down there) 2. Pistol 3. Pocket knife 4. Camera

    Preventing Game Meat from Spoiling

Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it. List in Progress: 1. Meet as many people as you can. 2. Get animal 3. Skin immediately 4. Remove bones 5. Wrap meat in separate game bags and let air hit 6. Store in shade 7. Call people that you met in step 1. If step 1 was a failure go to step 8. 8. Hire employees from Home Depot. 9. Make sure in step 1 that you meet and invite a butcher. If fail, PM 5guyshunting to see who his friend is. 10. Get on ice as soon as possible. Can build cooler out of tarp or purchase a 120qt cooler. Tilt cooler to let water drain out. You guys have a great day.

We're under a little snow right now (Albuquerque), but would be interested in meeting her. Does your friend still have her?
