Well my relatives are from Arkansas so I was probably hitting the homemade hooch too much for my fingers to keep up. So I might be Roy Clark to his Buck Trent but I will never be Ned Beatty.

If there are cows or other livestock in the area when it is put out it is not "baiting" from what I read. So just make sure there are cows or livestock in the area and you are perfectly legal.

Two examples to understand why some won't give unit numbers. Back in the 80's before we had a draw for deer and it was over the counter tags. My dad uncle, and I all tagged out on deer. My uncles picture was in the paper as well a a brief story with the general location, it was a nice healthy deer for NM. The next year we were overrun with hunters because of it. The next example is elk hunting I had a unit I would draw every other year. There were about 500 resident hunters putting in for 150 tags. Then a hunting show aired showing, with a "general description" of west-central NM, of a nice bull getting killed. The next year there were 1500 resident hunters putting in for the same 150 tags so draw odds went way down. The bad thing is I know the unit where the hunt took place and it is not the unit I put in for. So I won't put it out on a public forum that anybody can access but I don't mind keeping it private if I can help somebody out.

I thought he was just speaking New Mexican as I knew what a maroon was. We still use "over yonder" and stuff like that to.

I agree. Not only your firearms and accessories but all you have in your house. We have riders for extra insurance on the wife's jewelry and our computers. When we installed our home alarm we get a discount from our insurance company. Know what your insurance covers and make sure you are covered. Pictures and serial numbers are important to have as well.

How many use scent lock/blocker clothing?
Red Sparky replied to PelaPapas's topic in Other Hunting Gear
Do what I did and start searching Cabela's Bargain Cave. The only reason I have Scent Blocker is I bought two pairs of pants for $15.00 apiece and a nice mid weight jacket for $30. That way you are not out a lot of money of buying brand new gear and not having it work out. -
Well I was excited to go coues hunting with the bow this year when I put in for the tag. I put in for unit 23 here in NM since it is pretty much a guaranteed tag. I had three bucks last year on my elk hunt but had a muzzle loader mule deer tag in a different unit. I didn't think I was going to go, you can read about that part of my life in Loss of a Mentor in Memorials, but my younger daughter knew I needed to go. She basically made me. So we went Thursday before the holiday weekend and set up camp. My wife and older daughter came down to Reserve on Saturday afternoon and all three of them left on Monday the 7th. We got rained on everyday and I think the only day we saw the sun was Sunday morning. We were setting up camp and the bulls started bugling about 4:30 PM. We walked from camp and I was cow calling and bugling a little bit hunkered down in some young pine trees and I pointed out a spike, two rag horns a 3X3 and a 3X4, and one small 5X5 80 yards from us. They had us pegged but didn't know what we were and walked off the other direction. Thursday and Friday night we would listen to bugles from camp and then the weekend karaoke brigade arrived and they shut up. I had more traffic by me on that forest road than I do at my house in Los Lunas. We jumped two 150-180 class mule deer on Sunday morning but no coues deer. After my daughter left I didn't see any more elk. I did see three more nice mule deer in the 150 class and had does feed within 20 yards of me. Luck would have it if I had a mule deer tag I would only see coues. Then I got the call from my wife and came home early. Hunting is over unless I can make it back in January. They had Frank's services on Saturday and I knew he would want me to stay hunting so I did. My Dad was diagnosed with cancer and an aneurism on his heart. We are in the early stages of finding out how advanced the cancer is and if they can do anything for his heart. I figured I had enough time hunting and came home. Here are some pictures of my 11 year old in camp with me and some of the scenery but I didn't get any animals.

Crying about wolves again
Red Sparky replied to ctafoya's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Sounds to me like they are trying to stop coyote hunting through the accidental wolf killing. This was never a "confirmed sighting" as they had a picture but could not pick up a radio collar signal. As known by all a picture can be altered to show what you want. I mean a 200 mile radius from a wolf sighting at my house means no coyote hunting from Las Cruces,NM to Las Vegas,NM and the AZ line to the TX line. I call BS on this one. -

I was four years old when my father applied to NMSP. He was a teacher with a bachelors in math and a masters in physics when he became a uniformed patrol officer. We lived in Deming at the time and I told my mom there is a police officer on the phone to talk to you. That was my first introduction to Lt. Frank Young, Personnel and Training, NMSP. My father went into the crime lab in Santa Fe as a firearms/tool marks examiner. Part of his job was teaching accident reconstruction to the recruits at the academy. Frank and my father became good friends. My parents played bridge with Frank and Neva just about every saturday night and I watched it all. We were always over at each others house as well as camping, fishing, hunting, jeeping, etc.. My father and Frank taught me how to mechanic, weld, fix just about anything, shoot, waterski, and everything else that is important to a growing kid. When I lost a hunting knife when I was about 12 Frank got me one for Christmas. It was boxes inside of boxes like following a trail, one box I remember had dry dog food as deer droppings. I still have that knife and have carried it with me for the last 36 years. I remember one trip to the dump in Santa Fe Frank pulled over in his '66 Willy's Jeep on the dirt road and said time for you to learn to drive. I was like 11 at the time. There were so many good times and a few I got my butt chewed out, I never did that again. I always called Frank and Neva, Uncle and Aunt. After all the years, outings and experiences I loved them more like my second set of parents. They treated me like an adopted son. Neva died last year and my family stayed at Frank and Neva's house over on the Mimbres River by San Lorenzo. Frank looked well and about 15 years younger than his almost 80 years. Last week I got a text from my sister/cousin that Frank had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, he was requesting to see us. My wife and I took our two girls to Hatch to see him in the assisted living center he was in. He was still sharp in the mind but he looked to be close to 100 years old. I am lucky to still have both of my parents. On Aug. 27th at 7:33 a.m. , their 54th wedding anniversary, I got the call that Frank had died. I feel like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. With two weeks to go until my elk hunt, I hear the mountains calling to me. I don't think this year I can answer the call.

I sent you some ideas on what to look for as I can't recommend an electrician down there. I am gone for three weeks as it is hunting season so hopefully it helps.

I feel for you. Sorry for the loss.

I was not thinking I could make it but my 11 year old daughter is forcing me to go and to take her with me for a few days. I will just have to wait a few weeks but I know it is what I need.

We are humans and not robots. Crap happens and we have to deal with it. I think most hunters strive to make a quick humane kill but sometimes even when we try to take all variables into account something might happen beyond our control. It doesn't mean we are shooting outside the range of our capabilities. The thing we can do is learn from our and other's experiences to make us better. Ever hit a bird and see a big puff of feathers and have it fly off? Ever hit a limb with bullet or arrow and have it deflect? Sometimes it misses cleanly and sometimes it wounds. Watch just about any "pro hunter" on a show and watch all the perfect shots they make. NOT! It even ticks me off when they declare a clean miss and never go check for blood. Now what you do after the shot depends on you and your personal views. I know people that have spent the whole rest of the season trying to track that one animal. If they can't find it they quit hunting. Others keep hunting giving up on the animal they wounded by deciding it was not a lethal hit. This is all I am going to say except my hunts are coming up. Just so you know I am going to miss a 60 yard shot with my bow on an elk. Then I am going to wound a deer at 30 yards and not find it after three days of searching. Then I am going to shoot over the back of an elk at 40 yards. Then I am going to make a killing shot on a deer at 60 yards and I will end the season with a killing shot on a giant 400" bull at 10 yards.

So what do you do if you are above 6,500 ft. elevation. I would buy one but I am hunting at 8,500 ft and don't know if it would stay lit. Citronella candles? I had to spray for scouting as with all the rain this year they were eating me alive.

If you get one get the pulsing kind rather than solid on. When I was about 10 I grabbed the fence at my grandma and grandpa's place in KS after checking it with a weed to see if it was off. I thought it was but it wasn't. It took me a good long time to open my hand to let go where with a pulsing one breaks the contact so you can let go. The other thing I do is if the dog is jumping I run a ground wire under the top hot wire. Think of a bird not getting shocked because it is not grounded. If the dog gets off the ground on the wire they won't get shocked under the same principle. With the two wires the dog/animal makes contact with both and gets shocked. They will learn to stay away.
