With the monsoons we have been getting there will still be water every where. You can try water but it would be better to find food and bedding. 3 of the last 4 years I have had the early season and temps can vary greatly. In wet years it will be high 70's and low 50's depending on where you will be. If it is a dry year add about 10-15 degrees. Find the cows because the bulls will be getting close. Last year I did not have an elk tag but did have a deer tag. Sept. 14th a 6x6 was pushing and herding cows. I watched them for an hour as they fed and they never made a sound. Had a cow walk 2 yards from me, what a rush. The elk are usually bedded before 9 am and come out the last hour of daylight. Look at north slopes for bedding areas. As far as being quiet, after Labor day they will not make a sound. I have been in there and the elk were starting to be vocal and then Labor day hits and everybody driving roads are bugling like it is full on rut and the elk shut up. That has been my experience anyhow. Two years ago I was using a cow call just mewing and called 2 spikes and a 5 point in to 80 yards, this was Sept. 1st. They were bugling so I knew they were coming and my daughter had a blast seeing them. Then Labor Day hit like the previous 2 years, traffic increased on the roads, bugling by hunters started like full on rut crazy bulls, the elk shut up. I could not even get a bugle response at 2-3 in the morning where I knew bulls to be. Have fun and good luck!

The other thing to think about if you rent. My uncle had a little Datsun Diesel P/U that he used for a work truck. One winter morning he turned off his propane heater and threw it in the front and went inside for breakfast. The heater wasn't all the way off and the truck burned. Anything attached to the truck, i.e. 2 way radio, and the truck were covered under the vehicle policy (full coverage). Anything in the truck but not mounted to the truck, i.e. tools, were covered under homeowners policy. So if you rent and don't have a homeowners policy get Renters Insurance.

If you know anybody that lives and or votes in NM I am thinking of supporting Garrett Veneklasen. On Bowsite under the NM regional forum they have a thing about him and Randy Newberg is a guest speaker for a fundraiser on Aug. 28th. and I figured I would go. The nice thing is he is a hunter and not a rancher. If Randy is speaking for him I figure he must be pretty good for hunters. Try to pass this along to all voters in NM so maybe hunters can finally get reasonable access to state land.

Maybe ranchers and hunters can start working together rather than being at odds with each other. Maybe we can get rid of the good old boy system that has been in place for years. Would you prefer Lyons be elected back in? How about Ray Powell or Jim Baca? I can understand why ranchers don't want to allow access to state land or BLM land in checkerboard areas. I also say that hunters should not have to pay for state land they don't have access to. So tell me how much public land do you hunt or is it RO?

Can't imagine using it on my solo hunts with a bull coming in. Being able to use a mouth diaphragm I can stop a bull when I am at full draw without having to move. Why not just buy a bite and blow?

Just like buglethemin said. Cut the cord about 18 months ago and I can watch what I want when I want. Came home and checked out Sling and the original Planet of the Apes was on, about 30 minutes into it. Decided to not watch live but restarted from the beginning. I also do the hunting channels and Youtube. As stated above if I want to watch live sports I either use the antennae or go to the bar.

Get it in your mouth and practice! I've been using mine on the way to work or when I'm shooting my bow. All of a sudden one day it'll start to sound good!! Single reed for cow call, which is all you need to learn. Good luck. The sound generated comes from the latex and your tongue , not the roof of your mouth. Yes the call comes from the latex and your tongue pressure. Also the amount you blow and most starting out blow too hard. Single reeds don't take as much air pressure as triple reeds. The only thing the roof of your mouth does is allow the call to seal so you don't have air leaking by. That is why they make so many sizes and some can use one call great and others suck. Try a variety until you find one that works for you.

Depends a lot on the roof of your mouth. I would love to use one of those dome shaped calls but can't do it. The ones with the "palate plate" rather than a dome I can do.

The one we had had a pistol grip on it since it only had about a 14"-16" barrel. If you put a shoulder stock on it you fall on the wrong side of federal laws of having a barrel under 18 1/2" inches.

Citranella candles for camp. Wondering about the Thermacell since I will be at 8,000 ft. elevation. The skeeters up there were like helicopters coming in to land, huge suckers.

I see 208muley and AzDiamondHeat have hunted NM. At least the advice they give seems to make me think so.

Disclaimer---Do your own research before using my load. I use Prodex P. Yes you can use P in a .50 but it is like a magnum load. I use 90 grains VOLUME of Pyrodex P and a 200 grain Shock Wave bullet for my deer loads. The same powder charge with a 250 grain Shock Wave is my elk load and it is a max load in my ThunderHawk, that according to T/C will handle 150 grains of RS. Started showing signs of pressure on the #11 caps. Very accurate load for me. You can try Triple 7 or BH 209 and follow the charts.

Just do what I do when I find that many......Throw on the banana hammock and clown mask and go for a stroll.

The one I have is the best. My dad sold me his S-10 when he bought his Ranger and took the shell off to put o the Ranger. My dad called me up several weeks later and said "The people around the corner moved out, there is a camper shell that should fit the S-10 I sold you, it says free". I was there in 30 minutes and putting it on my truck.
