Kodiak Brown Bear Hunt 31 Oct - 6 Nov 2021
catclaw replied to IAMMAC's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
I deer hunt a lake in that unit. I saw 12 bears in 1 hour a couple of years ago. Some spots are thick. The fall hunt is tough with short daylight hours, no salmon left ( usually) and thick brambles. I have a spring tag on the other side of the island. -
Funny thing is, I didn't apply for 22!
-
I'm sitting on max points and until i understood the draw i wasted a lot of years trying to draw 22🤷

10mm for grizzly bear defense
catclaw replied to bojangles's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Must have been a double charge is only thing I can think of -
As soon as the pear and turbinella Oaks are on they're much easier. Same is true of the manazitas.

10mm for grizzly bear defense

There are no 9 foot sows FYI. I live in Kodiak and i carry a Glock in 40 S&W. I did have a model 35 blow up in my hand last August on n grizzly hunt but i was shooting a caribou thank goodness. -
Spring is so much different than fall that you can't hardly compare them. Food is scattered in spring. Hard to target them like fall. I've seen them move to new mountain ranges come fall. Last spring bear i killed was feeding heavily on a desert plant. His scat was pure green and pungent like the plant. He was very close to his den also. Good luck

Anyone know a .243 Pelt Friendly Load?
catclaw replied to broadhead's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
No such thing as a fur- friendly 243 load. You will lose fur more often than not. -
Wasn't there like 170,000 more applications than last year? I didn't get an easy tag!
-
I wonder how the sheep are fairing with the big fire in the Superstitions right now. I remember when the Wallow fire killed a LOT Of sheep!
-
I get the impression they don't expect it to stop until the can contain it at 88/188.
-
Looks like the whole unit is going to burn.

What is the story this year for the desert sheep. A lot of big ones were killed last year, any left? I have max points and want to apply for the best units but I have heard conflicting reports of Pneumonia, blue tongue and so forth. I am looking at 22 and 24b. Anyone know why they have a separate hunt just for the wilderness? Wouldn't 24BS cover all that too and more?
-
I did 28 and 24B
-
I hope this is a good year but like said, I may still have to wait 10 more years to get a tag. I heard they are capturing the rams out of 24B and sending them to Texas.
-
Here we are again. Same argument as last year. You can't count on the outfitters to help you choose as the several I talked to only wanted to steer me to the units THEY knew and not somewhere else that was potentially good. Obviously last years strategy didn't work.

I went to Nambia in July. I had a great time, shot some nice trophies and enjoyed the relief from our heat. Congrats on your great trip!!

4 bodies recovered from ATV crash that sparked Arizona wildfire
catclaw replied to Freakycamo's topic in The Campfire
Has anyone heard if they were hunters? Isn't archery elk going on up there? -
I never set the 180 as my goal, I want to hunt a unit that has that potential. Who wouldn't?
-
I still have 20 good years of hitting the hills left. I asked because maybe somebody knows something and disease, die-off etc. There are 4 different hunts in those 2 units as well. There are folks who know a lot more about sheep than I do. I have only been on a few sheep hunts myself. All were for nelsoni rams, however.
-
I don't care what everyone else is putting in for, just what I am putting in for. When I drew my antelope tag I applied for one choice and drew tag #1. I am open to 22 or 24B, not really thinking there are 180 class sheep in any other units right now.
-
Yesterday it said "drawn" and even gave me the tag number for rifle bull in 23. Today is is back to Pending. something is amiss.

I know a couple of tanks in 23 that have hundreds and hundreds of water dogs.
