That makes NO sense at all. All guns have "custom" serial numbers. They are whatever the manufacturer decides is needed. MANY guns have the same serial numbers- they are NOT issued by the govt. I can't imagine what you mean by "they couldn't find his gun" and "it came up as a 12 Ga shotgun". Who couldn't find his gun? Anyway don't worry about the serial number- there will be a place for it on the gun permit. I never had them look at my caliber stamp. Also. you can't take anything bigger that a "300 magnum" into Mexico unless they have changed their laws recently. I can't imagine why would would not have a caliber stamp on the gun somewhere? If it is not stamped- you can always take it to someone who has a pantograph or laser and have something put on it.

For every light contour barrel that can shoot that good, there are 10 heavier contour barrels that shoot better. Rare is the #1 contour rifle that will shoot 3/4" groups. Another advantage to a heavier contour is that it will shoot different bullets to a similar point of impact. A light barrel is good for about 2 shots and then it is too hot and will start walking. I guess you can take this all into consideration. I just built a long range rifle for myself and it weighs 9 lbs all up. This is pretty heavy for a whitetail rifle in my book. Can't want to carry anything much heavier! I could have shaved about 3/4 of a pound with an ADL style magazine and a 1" scope tube. It works for me though.

Do I have to go shoot it first so you can see if it shoots or not??

I use one in 222 for calling.

The word is that game and fish intentionally held off on releasing them BEFORE their stupid expo was over so that disgruntled hunters wouldn't fail to attend the expo. I have heard if from several sources so it is probably true. If they are out on Monday, I then will be completely convinced that it is true!

Huskemaw 5-20 LR Rifle Scope
catclaw replied to Bucks_N_Yotes's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
The glass in the Huskemaw is as good as any of the Leupolds that I have. That said, my only knock on it is that it is basically limited to one bullet, one velocity, one elevation... it is not very flexible. It is very simple, the turret is marked in yards rather than MOA or milliradians. I prefer to use a hand-held computer and click into my turrets what it suggests. My biggest complaint is a lack of suitable laser range finders that will range much beyond 700-800yds without a real reflective target- and yes, I am talking about the Leica and Swarovski units. I have not tried the Zeiss but I doubt it is any better. Newcon has some that look interesting but the interesting ones start at about $2200. -
I wasn't sure the best place to post this but this has as many hits as any place. For those who may be looking for employment, we are hiring transport officers. This will be in Florence, AZ at the Dept Homeland Security Processing Center. Requirements: [*]Must have a CDL and high school diploma with preference to corrections experience and those with passenger endorsement. [*]You must be able and obtain a "P" endorsement ASAP. I can help arrange this for those who have CDLs and lack the P endorsement only. [*]You must be able to obtain an Armed Guard card from DPS (criminal background check) [*]You must be able to pass a Federal background check as well. [*]You must have a good driving record- no DUIs etc. [*] Starting pay is $17.74/hour ( I think) until you finish training (about 6 weeks) and $24.39 after that. There are other benies such as 401(k) and health care. This wont be open much longer if anyone is interested. It involves transporting detainees to and from airports, to the port of entry (Nogales) and to and from medical appointments as well as miscellaneous pick-ups around the eastern half of the state. If you have a DV conviction or felony you cannot get an armed guard card so you wouldn't be eligible. PM me for application info. Thanks to Amanda for letting me post this. Dennis

Kent- you misunderstood- your credit score is meaningless- you can't have over $7500 in outstanding debt (I think that is the cut off) Meaning that if you defaulted on a loan(s) and are behind- it can't be more than a certain amount. You just can't admit you are wrong can you? There are quite a number of folks who had bankruptcies and bad debt that were hired. Most had to catch up on a couple of loans and they were fine- the bus drivers of which I speak were all hired at the same time as me and they were told they had to have good credit. They were told if they wanted to take a chance and write a hardship letter they could. Some did and I think they let them slip. The ones that were let go all had felonies or recent misdemeanors or domestic violence convictions. Nobody was mislead- in fact, they were told repeatedly that if they had any of these issues they would not pass the background check. It was their call. Some were so desperate for work that they just lied on their apps and worked until it caught up with them. They got paid to go to training and then were no longer allowed on the Federal Property. You should really let this go- I am sorry that you don't qualify and didn't want a job- those 6+ that did get one from here are grateful that I posted it. I wanted to see if I could attract some like-minded souls to this job and I succeeded- I didn't mislead anyone. They called me or emailed me for more details. I refused to take apps from quite a few people because they didn't qualify. Several were brothers of folks that post on here regularly and were told about the opening by someone that read it here. This thread is dead until I report back with how many we hired.

You are absolutely correct in this. You should not quit your job if you have any criminal background or bad credit. We have already started submitting backgrounds on people that are not even hired. We want this to be a painless as possible. There were some real stupid people that quit their school bus driving jobs ($13/hours) to take this job ($24/hour) that had issues. There are about 4 of them that are now unemployed but since they basically lied on their paperwork. I don't feel the least bit sorry for them! To clarify a couple of things: since you have to work on a Federal facility- they run a Federal background check on you- a very thorough one through the OPM. They have not recinded the 40 year-old-waver at this time. They have raised it twice now. Don't see them changing it back myself.

When I told my son-in-law about your post, he said that the government would not hire anyone over 35, or some such age, when wearing a sidearm is involved. Is that true? He's 51 years old. Bill Quimby That is not even close to true. First off, to be hired as an 1811 (investigator ie. DEA agent, FBI agent et al) you can't have reached your 40th birthday. Same might be true of 1801s (armed federal officer- not investigators) but I am not sure on that. We are a PRIVATE contractor- we hired some 65 year folks that really have no business with guns but the discrimination laws are in their favor and we have no choice. He should have applied!!

Kent- when I got hired here, I was guiding an elk hunt in 27. I had the company email me an app and went home for a day and filled it out- my wife FAXed it in and i got a phone call the next day offering me a job. I drove home from Alpine and started Sept 29th. A month later I was promoted to supervisor. Pretty painless if you ask me. I had a CDL but no P endorsement. I went and paid a guy $75 and got my endorsement. No biggie. We are vetting people a little more closely this time so that we don't get so many folks who can't pass backgrounds, are lazy or just plain dumb. We lost about 6 people to back grounds and I had to let one guy go yesterday and one quit last week. People don't want to pass on a job that pays this good right now. I just thought I would throw this bone out there to those folks who have common interests with me and might possibly be good employees. So far I have about 6 from here that will PROBABLY be hired. How is that for odds? I need resumes for anyone else interested by COB today. Email me for a FAX number. Thanks Dennis dwslade@gmail.com

I am not sure what you are insinuating that the hiring process is "crap" but it is actually very straight forward. It is being done locally instead of through corporate so that we can better screen applicants and have a better pool to hire from. You turn in an app, can pass all the stuff, have a decent interview, there is a good chance you have the job. As far as being a new company, not hardly. This company has contracts in NY, TX, CA and now this one in Florence. Congress has mandated that ICE and other Fed agencies contract these services out to save money. This is a brand new contract and we are doing what ICE agents were doing previous to Nov 1. If you have buddies that work as DOs at the facility in Florence and they are bad-mouthing the "new" company it's probably only because they are more restrictive than the previous contractor and are making people tow-the-line so to speak. The detention side is a different company than the transportation side. Some things haven't gone smoothly but that is to be expected with a new contract. I think we are doing a pretty good job right now; good pay, good benefits, 4-10 work schedule, provide all the uniforms and gear, pay for training etc. Things will only improve. The drivers being hired now will come into the job with people on their side to train and help them so it should be pretty painless for them. This is the easiest job I have ever had.

No, it is not with Wackenhut. I don't think they are currently hiring.

My son-in-law is wanting to finance an AR-10 project and decided he will part with some of his "horde" to do it. I dunno if ammo is still hard to come by or not. If anyone is interested in this get with me. He has 9mm, 40 S&W, .223 and some 7.62x39. This is NOT a fire sale so don't get your hope up that he is giving it away. He lives in S/E Mesa. Dennis
-
The only Wolf stuff must be 7.63x39 and he didn't bring me any of that. I have Winchester, Remington and Federal
-
You driving to Mesa, I am not bringing them up. I have 80,000 rnds of 223. No discounts.

I got a call from Eric at Jay's Bird Barn this morning telling me that the 15x56 Kaibabs that I ordered several months ago were here. I know testing in mid day is tough but tried anyway. I set them up on tripod beside my 15x56 SLCs. Right away I decided I didn't like the head on the Vortex tripod but the legs were fine. I stuck a Vortex resolution chart up 60 yds away so I could make some meaningful comparison. The Kaibabs are very, very good- no handicap hunting with these. I found that the focus was much stiffer on the Vortex than the Swarovski and the depth of focus was a little better on the SLC as well. The SLCs also had a little wider field of view- at 600 feet it was about 8' wider near as I could tell. Both were sharp edge-to edge. The resolution on general items was tough to differentiate. When looking at the chart though, the slight nod went to the SLCs. My SLCs are over 3 years old and the new ones may be even sharper- I don't know. The Vortex would close a little tighter than the SLCs for those of you who have a tough time with some of the other big roof prisms. Physically, they were about the same size. The eye cups on the Swarovski are without competition and the Vortex was no different; the objective covers are similar but the eye piece covers on the SLCs are still the best. The Kaibabs came with a two-piece tripod adapter that is very small. It has a quick-change feature that worked well. For $1200, my first impressions are that it is a great glass for hunting whitetail. It gives up very little to the $2000+ Austrian optics. I will take them out next week and do some more comparisons in shadows and lower light conditions so I can compare brightness. Vortex has the best warranty in the business- can't go wrong here.

How did you guys do?? We went 3 for 4. Killed ours along the Baldy Wilderness area. Dennis

My son had it the past two years and it was dismal for us. The only nice bucks we found were in a burn and the stupid sheriff closed the road the day we went in to hunt them. Saw lots of does, very few bucks bigger than spikes. He has the other side of the highway this year. We glassed for hours above Skull Valley and saw nothing. I have written it off.

I am not sure I see the utility in camo painting a sniper-type rifle? Like the deer is going to make it out at 500 yds?? It is an interesting pattern however, but just does trip my buzzer. I guess I am too old school.

We will be camping off the 273 by Lee Valley somewhere. Good luck with your son.
