Advice on rifle for son 13yr

i ended up getting my son a 7mm/08 Savage Axis 2. I went this direction because i could load a lite load (120gr) for deer and a heavier load (140gr) for elk. He's a little recoil sensitive now. The Axis 2 is a shooter. I posted a review on it somewhere but it was shooting .3 MOA on handloads. The scope is decent....not high end by no means but for a start rifle it's adequate.
  2. I don't have time to build my own...wondering if anyone makes them or will be making some for themselves and i can pay some money to get one made for me. Something of medium size with cheap wheels on it so i can drag it out of the sun/weather when i'm not using it. let me know. thx miles

    Savage Axis 2 7mm-08 review

Picked this up from BPS for ~$400. Developed a few different loads (altering seating depth) at 41gr of H4895, with 120gr Nosler BT Hunters. Goal is to use the gun on my upcoming son's doe hunt in Kaibab. First impressions, nice action, nice accutrigger (i adjusted to min ~2.5 lbs). Stock is cheap, barrel is lite. I like hte lighter overall package, but the barrel warms up after a few shots which makes load development kind of a hassle. Results speak for themselves. i think i found a winning load....

    Youth Turkey Camp in 6A

took my son out in 6a but we didn't visit the camp. we had a group of 4 birds ,less than 100 yds from us 4 hunts in a row but could not get the birds to come in. with each hunt we fine tuned our setup to try and get in better spots/positions but we couldn't get them close enough to set eyes on them until Saturday night. two birds popped out of the trees from 80 yds or so, i called, he stopped, waited for 2 mins then ran after another bird. he was a tom for sure, but the other could have been a hen. did anyone else have a hard time getting the birds to come close? Was it my calling, or was it too early/too late?

    6a youth turkey

heading up friday with my son to scout for next weekends opener. he hasn't taken any big game yet so we're going to give it our best. admittedly i'm not an expert turkey hunter but i've been doing some research and know the area pretty well (just need to find birds lol) Is the 229 road open up there? how are the road conditions? has anyone by chance seen birds in the area? feel free to pm me. thx miles
  19. I bought it new. Nice little setup...bolt action so i can teach my kids better mechanics of shooting vs semi auto. So i put a pursuit rimfire scope on it....i didn't want to drop big coin on a .22. I took it out to sight it in and it was all over the place at 50 yds. I would have thought i could shoot silver dollars repeatedly at that range. I was using remington .22 thunderbolt ammo...probably had 450 rounds through it without cleaning up to that point. I cleaned it when i got home and hopefully that tightens things up a bit. Has anyone had bad luck with that ammo? I have a box of the Federal Automatch stuff...hopefully i get better results.
