I've been working and chasing elk for the last 3 weeks and finally found some time to hike in and check the trail camera. This big buck showed up at the spring and was captured on the SD card! I think I glassed this buck up this morning. He was quite a ways off but I think it's the same buck. Now whether or not this is the buck I videoed back in late August in the velvet, I'm not sure, but I think it might be. He is definitely one to keep an eye on! If I pass on him I know my 15 year old son won't. Can you guys give me a guess at the score? Scott

I'll be there this morning. Probably a little before lunchtime. If anyone is there and wants to hook up, I'll have my cell phone. 928-651-1586 Scott

Yes we do have 3 rugs already adorning our walls. I was about 750 yards from the bear. The photo was taken from my video camera which was videoed through my 30x80 Docters. I finally have a new Leica Digilux 2 camera so hopefully I can get some better quality photos. Scott

I've been back in 4 times looking for that big nontypical and have yet to relocate him. This last trip in I set up a trail camera on the spring I saw him drinking from and will check it in a couple of weeks. I did see the smaller of the 3 bucks in this area on the trip in yesterday. Also spotted a bear. He was a good one, maybe 250 lbs., chocolate brown and making a glutton of himself on acorns. The hunt is still on in unit 27, but I haven't bought a tag this season since my emphasis has been on this big buck. Here's some photos of the bear. Scott

Chris send it to me and I'll check it out. Daniel, I don't know when then got it, but surely have one now.
  6. I've got a son in metal shop this year and I would like for him to cut me out a nice coues rack silhouette with their plasma cutter. Anyone have a nice coues rack silhouette that would work for this? Scott

You better believe I'm helping him. Pulling up the camp trailer too, even though we're only hunting 2 hrs. from the house. It's just better when you're camped out. Scott

That's not too bad Amanda. I think about that one.

Yea, you're right about Austin. At 15 he already weighs what I do and he's still growing. He still can't hang with old man in the hills though. He's gonna have to wait until my age catches up with me a bit more. Fred hasn't said anything to me about it, but I'll ask him. Would you believe that he drew the early muzzleloader bull hunt in unit 27!? His hunt starts Sept. 30. He's pumped!!!! Scott

    Coues Head Silhouette

I was hoping to find someone who already had one, but I might do the shadow deal. I'm not sure what angle to use, I guess it would depend on the rack's configuration. It would be the full head, lifesize. Scott

Tommy you may be like me and prefer the hunt over the kill. I know as much as I like to hunt I would prefer to kill later in the hunt if I'm the only one with a tag so my hunting time isn't cut too short. This year my 15 year old son has the December tag with me, so if I can find a monster early on I'll put the smack down on him and then continue hunting with my son. No, he's not shooting the monster. He's got the rest of his life for that. Scott

Thought I would give you guys an update on the big buck who's photo is posted here. I've been into the area three more times since I took the video and have not been able to locate that big rascal. I have found the other 2 bucks, one of which will probably go in the 90's when it's all said and done. My next step is to setup a trail camera on the spring and see if he's using it, and I'll keep making some trips in there every week or two to continue my search. Looks like this one is going to be a real challenge. Like a lot of older class mature bucks, this one acts like he's a different animal. He doesn't hang with the guys like most bucks this time of year, I know the other two bucks gave him lots of room when they watered together at the spring. He's definitely not using the same grazing grounds or if he is, he's doing it at night. Anyone have any other suggestions? Anything I might have missed? Scott

Way to go Tommy! Do have some stand sites picked out? January is really not the far off, 3 1/2 months. Scott
  15. A few years ago in unit 27 we were hunting the Nov. bull hunt. For a few days during the hunt we could see a very low flying plane circliing an area we knew held elk. In talking with a friend who was camped near there, he said that USO had a camp there and in visiting with them was told and shown that they had some new guides who had actually never been to this area. They had a plane locating the elk and giving the coordinates to the guys on the ground. I think opening morning the head guy handed out GPS's with the coordinates of the bulls they had located the previous day to the guides and they took out their clients and went "hunting". I'm not sure but I think this was actually legal then. The only thing I can verify of this story is that I personally saw the plane for 2 or 3 days, during th hunt, flying very low, circling the Mud Springs/Robinson Mesa area. I know if I had been hunting that area I would have been fit to be tied! I think this incident is may have been what triggered the rule change on that. Scott

Wow Jack you really need to get some video of that big monster!! What a find. I've been out and located one big buck. I took some video of him from about 700 yards out. The video is not the best and the still photo from the video is even worse but that's all I have right now. My Leica camera is down and I'm franticaly working to get a new camera. Anyway, here's the best photo of that buck. He is big, going well over the 100 inch mark. Other than that I can't tell, he was just too far out. Scott

    Scouting NM

I spent all day yesterday in NM, scouting for the hunts. I went into some new areas mostly to see if they looked like they might hold whitetail. Since I'm running to stay in shape, I took a fanny pack, put on my running gear and ran 4 1/2 miles into one area to find a place to glass and camp. Took me just under 2 hours to make the 9 mile round trip. It's a nice way to scout an area if you're just wanting to see if it's suitable for Coues deer. All of unit 23 is green from top to bottom, thanks to the monsoon showers. I didn't see any deer on my scouting trips but was out during the middle of the day and only had my 10's. I did see fresh tracks that had been made since the rain the day before. I found 3 good areas to glass, one looks great all the way around, one looks really good but there's not a lot of area and the other is absolutely beautiful but looks questionable for holding Coues deer; this one may be a good muley area. Time will tell, as it cools off some I'll make some trips into these areas to glass and see whats there. I only took video and don't have any photos as I wet my Leica down pretty good on a fishing trip and had to ship it back east for repairs. Scott

Ah shucks guys. I've been running for quite some time to keep in shape for hunting and really do enjoy trail running. So, I figure why not incorporate a trail run and a scouting trip into one and kill two birds with one stone as it were. It works well if I find an area that I've never been to and don't really want to hike in the dark, hunting a trail in the dark and finding a good spot to glass from in the early morning hours when I should be setup and glassing already. Going through all that trouble only to find that the canyon is too brushy or not really that great of Coues habitat. So that's the method to my madness. Where I went yesterday, I now know the trail and where to sit to glass and even where to camp (I now have the GPS coordinates). Plus I know that it looked more muley than Couesy and can decide when or if, to go back in there and glass. All based on what I learned from that little trail run. Amanda, as anyone who has ever hunted with me knows, my pack is very heavy and it tends to slow me down a bit. You won't have any problem keeping up. I decided to go ahead and post some photos that came off my video camera. The quality is poor but it will give you an idea. Here's the canyon I ran 4 1/2 miles to see. Looks great but don't know if it has any coues deer. Here's another area that looked better for Coues deer. Scott
