  1. Beautiful Coues buck Doug!!! It does look cold. I'm glad to see you put the smack down a big ole bruiser buck, he's a dandy!! For as long as I've hunted Coues deer I'm not a great estimator on score but he's certainly one to pull the trigger on, and maybe one to go in the books.

How far from roads? Picture for your time

I hunt unit 27 almost exclusively where we have huge expanses of roadless areas. I consistently find most of the Coues deer a mile or more from the roads. Although I'm aware one area where one can glass Coues deer consistently from the road that is the exception rather than the rule. The biggest bucks we have killed which includes 3 nontypicals and one typical were killed anywhere from one to six miles from the nearest road, with the biggest being a 123 inch typical that was six miles in and a 118 inch nontypical that was one and half miles in.

    My 2007 AZ Coues Hunt

Great story Amanda and thanks for all the compliments. It was a great time, with great scenery and great company. The success was just icing on the cake. It was nice to break away from the house building project for a little Coues Killin'. Congratulations on a great buck!!!

    The well is in!!!

Thanks Brent custom cabinets will be great. I'll let you know some details when I get closer. Thanks for the offer Tommy. I'll be in touch.
  15. We finally have our well on the 40 acres we will be building a home on. The well is putting out an unbelievable about of water. The driller tells me it's in the vicinity of 100 gpm. So it's time to start breaking ground and going up with the house. I'm not using a general contractor so anyone out there with any skills at home building want to offer your help, we can glass Coues deer in the mornings and build during the day. Here are some photos from yesterday at the property. The mountains in the background hold Coues deer.

    The well is in!!!

Tony, thank you for the offer. I will probably send you an email as I get closer. I'm having the plans drawn up. It's much too large to build from a rough sketch. Thanks again. Scott

    The well is in!!!

Thanks guys. Effenjeff, it's in that general vicinity but you can't get to it from the Mule Creek road. I'm about 6 miles west of there. You access it from Skyline View road through Lomo Linda and up Rattlesnake Road. My property ends where Forest Service Road 215 begins. Grizzly, I'll send you a PM. Doug, the well is 400 ft. We hit the first water at 240 ft. (5 gpm) and the really good source at 320 ft. By the way Doug there are lots of Gambel quail on and around the place and even a few Mearns, but for really good Mearns we would need to go up on top where the Coues live. Tony, it will be a wood frame using Post and Beam type construction. We will probably stucco the outside and install a metal roof. I was going to build a daylight basement but with the cost of concrete being what it is and the fact that I can get my lumber at wholesale cost I'm going to go with a concrete slab and then build it 2 story. Probably between 2500 and 3000 square feet. It will be more like a log cabin with the prow design with a wall of glass facing the mountains.

    Gila Wilderness Hunting

I used Tommy's service about 3 years ago when I took my 14 year old son on a Coues hunt there and had a great hunt. My son busted a nice Coues buck on the second day which now graces one of the walls in our home. A very memorable hunt.
