  1. I just cleared the schedule for this upcoming weekend and a good bit of next week. This is the time of year where I just refuse to let my hunting season end, so I've been doing some research on how to extend it. I'm coming down from Denver with my bow (maybe my .45 as backup) and want to put some pigs down. Anyone hunt this area? Would you recommend it or just keep on going to the Pecos River? Looks like lots of public land in the Capitans so I figured that would be a good place to start looking. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks fellas! (and I'm sure a few ladies as well)

Feral Hog Hunting in Capitan Mts ,NM

Ha! You said it Matty. The hogs are just a bonus at this point. I'll write something up on my success or lack there of when I get back.
  3. Whipped these up over the summer for my Coues deer hunt. Was a bit excited/had a little to much time on my hands. They worked out great.

    Monday Check in

Dig this thread! I've been working hard on getting solid for January's backcountry bow hunt. Ran 12 miles today. Signed up for a 1/2 marathon when I go visit the family in San Diego over Christmas. Time to get after it.

    That sure is a dandy!

    Colorado thunder chicken!

Here's a shot from Colorado as well, but a bit different environment. Saw a ton of them, took a shot at one with my bow, but a clean miss. Love that you can find these birds just about anywhere! http://www.huntingtherat.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/20140517_071718.jpg

    Magazines or books to read

This one is not exclusively about hunting, but I can't put it down. Arctic Homestead ---> http://bit.ly/1wLIC4w . It'll make you want to grab your rifle and bow and head up to Alaska to start homesteading. This family leads an incredible life and some of the true stories in there seem like they come straight out of Hollywood.
  8. My buddy's stomach not being able to handle Mountain House meals. The stink that came out of him peeled the inner layer off the tent wall. Lesson learned? Carry the extra weight of your own tent into the backcountry, it's worth the extra effort.

    coues wilderness jan hunt

I parked at Courthouse as well Edge. We just might see each other out there. I'll be the knucklehead with a pack on for 6 days rations.
  10. Well now that doesn't help!
  11. Alright, I'm chomping at the bit here. There is only so many times I can pack and repack my backcountry backpack. And I'm not even leaving to head down until January. God I love anticipation!
  12. Figured I post this article I wrote up for you guys and hopefully it helps out in some small way. I know I'm putting my neck out here... as I am sure there will be many who disagree with my advice. Take it all in with a grain of salt, it's one man's opinion on what has worked for him. www.huntingtherat.com

How many animals have you harvested in Arizona

Gonna need to take my shoes off to count for this one... nope, still coming up with just ONE.

    Bike Riding

I mountain bike a TON to train for hunting (well, I do it because I like it, the benefits to hunting is just a bonus). When I'm riding hard in the summer, I really notice the difference in the success rate of my fall hunts. It helps you physically (of course) but also gives you that mental edge of forcing yourself through something that hurts and sticking with it. Commitment so to speak.
  15. I'm pacing in my office with my bow in hand. I'm either going to get thrown out of the building or I'm gonna wear a hole in the floor. Either way it's not getting me closer to January yet.... Is it January yet?
  16. Heck of a buck! And way to stick to your guns about the stand. I feel like sometimes our instincts just kick in and tell us what to do, we just have to listen and take action on them. Great work and great story!
  17. Alright, I'm to excited not to share this story with others in the know of how stinking elusive these animals can be, not to mention trying my luck with a bow. Hope you guys like the read, it sure was fun to write! ---> Arizona Coues Deer Hunt

    Redemption Buck!!!!! Good Pics

That's a moose! Great deer right there. Way to stay after it.
  19. Sure do appreciate the it guys. There's another story in there as well on hunting the backcountry of the Eagletails. So if you're at work and avoiding it like the plague like I am, have a read. Think it's titled Desert Mulies.
  20. Thanks! They are some fun animals to chase. Night and day from the high alpine mule deer I'm used to chasing here in Colorado.

    coues wilderness jan hunt

I did a hunt last January, hiking a good ways into the Eagletails. Didn't see much, but good God did I enjoy it. I'm going to make that a tradition from here on out. Get out of the freezing cold of Denver to hike through the desert in a camo t-shirt? Ummm, yes please...
