Lately Ive been working on my 300 win mag with ladder test, hot loads, now coal change ups to get better grouping. Going through lots of rounds, I was was using the lead sled, but was told others from the forum it messes with the harmonics of the barrel. How does it mess with it, and not with sand bags, or bi-pods??? Plus what do you guys think of the Caldwell tack driver? I know for precise shooting the Lead Sled does not move or vibrate when Im shooting it. I know when I shoot, the shot was good and the bullet is truly reveling itself to me. (unless Im totally wrong) Any help or your preferred way of load development shooting would be great.

Shoot off sand bags, sled, stands, bi pod?
Zeke-BE replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Long Range Shooting
You might have to educate me a little more, i thought pushing a 208-215 grain bullet out of a win mag around 3000 fps is a hot load?? So dropping it down to 2940 is moderate? -
Shoot off sand bags, sled, stands, bi pod?
Zeke-BE replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Long Range Shooting
Right I know, I guess let me explain more. Shooting some loads that were 2850-2920 were 1-1/2 to 2" spreads. Some of my best ones were shooting at 2700 fps and 2990. -

pushing 208 grains 3010 fps and sub Moa groups. I got it up to 3060 with no sticky bolt and backed off a 1/2 of grain. But the best one is shooting 2990 with another 1/2 grain off, so Im looking into that one more. -

QUAIL, WHERE ?
Zeke-BE replied to davidkucharik's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Do What we all do. Pick an area and just try it out. One year it does great. I go back the next year and there is nothing. Then I start over all again -

Thanks that is what i was thinking. I got 2 load choices to get picky with now. Im going to be shooting from the shoulder and the bipod. -
Huh interesting!! I need to read up on that more. I was also told to use magnums primers instead of my 210m. My groups went from 1" to 2". Switch backed to 210m federals and it tighten back up. I don't know if it will work out for me in the long run.

Hunting to a lot of people is preparation! This includes looking for a new hunting pack, going over maps and units, scouting an area, glassing an area, talking hunt on this forum, and definitely developing loads for a gun. Especially striving for that Sub MOA is hunting for me. If you don't like to reload just shoot factory rounds. If you want to shoot out past 600 yards your going to want to reload unless you found a great match factory bullets (Nosler, Hornady) that is consistent with you shooting. Reloading is a blast and Ive learned alot from the guys on this forum. So I hunt all year theoretically! I would go back to that 72.5 and mess with the coal a little more. Also a lot of win mags are on the H1000.

Fluting a Factory Heavy Barrel?
Zeke-BE replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Couple years ago I asked the same question. Found some links I don't know where it is now but most people recommended to flute match grade barrels. Fluting a factory barrel could cause your barrel to shoot worse. Just what I've been told. Lances gun saved him slightly over 1/2 a pound. So if you did that, put on a lighter scope, and maybe flute the bolt you might be 3/4 of a pound weight saved. But if you have a 10 pound gun and you drop it down to 9 pounds it will make those hike feel just slightly better. -
Congrats well done

I don't know why people exclude energy. Why not have both! As sjvcon said, and lets say a bullet is a 30 cal. Accubond 180 grain shooting out of a 308 and take the exact same bullet and put it into a 300 RUM. Same bullet, same perfomace, but one is going so much faster. Lets say that Nosler has a guaranteed that the 30 cal Accubond will expand to 1/2" when impact occurs. Wouldn't the bullet with more speed cause more damage because of energy? AKA speed= energy. I mean this makes a lot of since to me unless this is totally wrong??? There is a reason why an apple only cracks open with a 22 and explodes with 22-250

What did ordered a threaded barrel? What did you use to take off your old action and installed the new barrel with?

270 tikka with scope and bipod 8ish. I do not have a problem with it out to 600 yards. Farther I really need to be steady with the light gun 300 win mag Remington Long Range heavy barrel 26" with everything on it 12#. I haven't taken it out hunting yet. Short half day hike only Weathyby 6.5 creedmoor 9# 24" barrel

Shoot off sand bags, sled, stands, bi pod?
Zeke-BE replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Long Range Shooting
I have had 2 hot loads that shoot sub MOA. But I got a few response from members from other threads that shooting off of sleds will cause your rifle to shoot differently. I never had heard of that. Its either they are right and stay away or it doesn't really change much. I don't know. If it doesn't change much Im going to keep doing it until I get the load I want. I want to see how much better I can do with those 2 sub MOA loads using the sled. Once I have that Ill start practicing. Unless from the shooters world they say don't touch the sled because it is really not good to build a load off of it I'll change my process.
