    2017 Javelina

Congrats!! Glassing up 2-3 heard's a day??? I have never glassed up javalina yet. Thousands of deer but not one pig
  2. Tikka T3 is the way to go for off the shelf! Pick one up a 260 rifle for around 650 dollars or a Tikka CTR 260 or 6.5 creedmoor. Sadly tikka doesn't make a standard 6.5 creedmoor rifle.

    Long Range Get Together

I am with Big Browns sorry guys. Plus we are doing Disneyworld and the week after that its our anniversary all in that month. To much going on!! If I decide to make it out there it will be last second but I won't throw a monkey wrench in and disrupt your shoot out, Ill just watch for fun. Unless you have someone drop out. But don't plan on me, if I make it great!
  4. I went to the other place and i don't remember what it was called. It was a single guy who owned it and he used to work there, but has his own fields in Maricopa. It was alright, and I took my dad with me and the birds looked like in the same condition you were talking about. He hired some extreme red neck young couple to help them out. I notice the same thing when he said "once the bird flies and lands its a dead bird" so you shot at it anyways even if its a bad shot! Dogs kept pointing a dead feathers and one bird couldn't even fly. Once I plucked the feathers off I knew why! There was almost no meat on the breast. It didn't even have enough muscle to fly. I bagged out and my dad got two. Over all it was alright but nothing great. It was more of a "just to say we did it" kind of thing.
  5. Mr Owl only counted to 3 before he got to the Tootsie pop!! That mean we hunters are screwed then!!!

    Leica 1600b- Want your feedback

I have the 1600B and love the beam. I think the farthest I hit was 2300 yards, and hitting 500-1200 yards is never a problem. The hardest thing to hit is when the sun rays are right in line with your laser you will have a hard time picking it up, but same with everything else. From what I've read you can't input your ballistics into it. You pick one thats closest to your rifle, or you do the strait line of sight and the 1600B will tell you the degree of angel and you can put that into your app. If Im wrong about the ballistic I would like to hear how to do it from someone who has done it.
  7. So probably another 100 on load development, another 50-100 double checking Moa drops and another 1--200 rounds on practice. That would put me already on a new rifle 400-500 rounds. Those numbers are probably high but if I practice with it about 40 shots a year it will last me another 10 years then.

    What to do ?????

I had 12s glad I went with 15s! I can see lots of details on antlers with my Cabelas Euros out to a 1000 yards, and pick out spike bucks out of the group. But I bought 8s Athlon Cronus from Douglas-Gun-Guy for the hunts in the pines or thick stuff.

    Ranging question

Thats what i've read and im only doing the line of sight and adding the degrees to the shooter app. But from what I've read the angle shots on the 1600B is just a chart it has loaded up to use. So you need to pick the one closes to it. Well at to 600 yards variables can change big time. Maybe not 400 yards. Even shooting 400 yards 15 degrees its not enough to change impact on a deer. I have shot out to 1000 yards at a 8 degree hill. I think it was really only about a couple of inches off. But shooting at 20-30 degrees you will shoot over its back. Ive read elsewhere that you will never get true exact shots using angle because the math comes out wrong (close but wrong). You need exact line of sight and exact degree. (from what Ive read, I would love see to others input on this) Does the Sig 2000 range finder have a better angle shooting program??

Stepped Over to the Dark Side

Awesome buck! I hunt rifle coues and archery mule's. Ill be out tomorrow morning chasing some mules.
  12. When I was a kid we just shot and then made adjustments. My first deer I ever shot at I could barley make him out on my grandpas 4x scope. My brother said it dropped and hit a foot below his feet. I was aiming at the top of his back with a 100 yd zero. That means that bullet dropped 4 ft. Meaning 30-06 150 grain was probably shooting close to around 450-500 yards and didn't know it. Never knew any better! By the time I really got into hunting there were range finders.
  13. I am assuming abused means over heating the barrel correct?
  14. Of all the stories I've read it seems like 1 out of every 5 barrels that is the wrong twist seems like it will shot that bullet with no problems. Then Im reading about guys who are shooting the 6.5 CM shooting the 148 ELD-M which on the box says 1:7 but these guys have 1:8's and quite of few of them are shooting lights out. 1:8s work best for 140's but who knows it could work out really sweet for you! The loading part I have know idea. But Ill enjoy reading about the loads that end up being posted here. Good luck and let us know how it all pans out.

    Ranging question

Explains the two options again? I have a 1600 b Leica and all I do is put in the yards and add the degree in the app. That's good, enough right??!! What's the angle options?

    Limited Opportunity Elk - WHY??

Its called "hunting" not bagging out. Hunting is a way of life of enjoyment and being with family and the outdoors. Bagging out is a bonus! Shooting a bull or buck is a double bonus!! Shooting a trophy, well you get the picture!

    Trophy and Meat Care? Gutless?

This is my grandpas advise with pigs, "once you shot your javalina skin it as fast as possible and throw the hide as far as you can, then cut the glands off and throw them as far as you can, then pick up the carcass and throw it as far as you can, and that's how you field dress a pig". Ha ha bless his soul he has past on and onto a better life!!

    Trophy and Meat Care? Gutless?

The only way I can see if you want to gut it out is to get ribs and tenderloin. Not much rib meat on deer and I can't imagine there are more on Javis and the tenderloin on deer are just a couple of bites so I don't bother. Gutless method is the way to go. No reason to stick your arm up an animal chest and cut the esophagus for bits and pieces of meat. The only thing I will hang up and gut is elk. Lots of meat worth while.

    Unit 22 OTC Deer Advice

What they don't tell you is hunting is expensive if you want to spot deer all day! But in the old days our grandpas just walked around until they saw one and shot it. But there are lot less deer today and more hunting pressure then when grandpa went out 30-40 years ago. But we are not saying don't bother to hunt unless you get the nice stuff. If I couldn't afford any binoculars I would still go out and beat the bush you will kick out something sooner or later (but more work included). If your on a tight budget do what matty said! You can even get the 10x50 nikon the big bulky one for around 150. If you got a couple hundred more get the monarch line they can do you good. But once you start looking through some really nice glass deer almost pop out like magic compared to the lower end binos. Get the tripod adapter and pop off the cap that is on the middle dial of you binos. You should see a brass threaded insert. The tri pod adapter threads on that and then the adapter snaps in you tri pod. I first started off with the cheap walmart camera tri pod for 20 dollars. It works but you need to find a spot that work out on the ground for you. Once you get going with you tripod you can scan without fatigue. Your hands don't get tired and your eyes start adjusting to your binos. It takes some time but after a while you can sit there for 15-30 mins just looking through your binos. A month ago I pick out a nice hill hiked to it and sat there all morning glassing. I could easily glass out to a mile away with a pair of 15x. If money is not a problem get good glass!! Everybody usually makes their way that direction and I never heard of anyone ever saying I wish I get rid of these and go back to the 300 dollar binos. No one regrets it.

    Man cave bar

    Fancy!!
  23. What Stomp just said!! That was one of my question to Dougsls-gun-guy why he built it. With the longer neck and fire forming it your neck goes right to 0.013 wall thickness at the neck instead of 0.044" on the 6.5-06 AI. No turning needed and you have the longer neck and longer brass life. Plus I like .270 over a 30-06 so I thinks it looks and sounds cooler saying 6.5-.270 AI. Not to many people have that. But I'm using the 6.5-06 AI 40 degree shoulder dies. Once fired formed I had to shave the shell holder down just a tad to bump the shoulder back 0.002-3" because of the longer neck. (With a little help from Lance on how to do it). Stomp is the one who built it and Dougals the gun guy sent the reamer so I'm assuming the reamer accounted for the longer neck on the 270 instead of the shorter neck of the 30-06??

Spot on!!!!!^^^^^^. That's what I do!!! You will see more and be more rested by glassing all day instead hiking. I only still hunt areas with lots of small hills with tons of pockets and ravines, and thick brush and trees. I only still hunt when I have to.
