Whats the longest youve left an Elk in the field
Zeke-BE replied to trphyhntr's topic in Elk Hunting
Great information. Been on elk hunts but still no luck! I thought you could because most elk hunts are really cold. Never had to worry about deer because it was always warm and I gut and skin ASAP and put on ice. This will make me think twice about my shots on an even hunt now -

Let's narrow this 6.5 chamber down (help)

H1000 60.8 grains CCI 250 Avg. 3115fps H1000 60.9 grains Federal 210 Match Avg 3120fps I don't remember why the 0.01 grain difference. I think I messed up on a load instead of taking it apart I just add the other rounds .01 grain more. But comparing it they are the same in very identical. It looks like with 0.01 grain I got 5fps more. Only difference is that my primer didn't flatten as bad nor cause a crater Sorry the Federal 210 didn't flatten like the CCI 250 did. -

To get 3,120 fps Im using H1000 60.5 g I got faster speeds up to 3200 fps with other powders such as H4831 but im at a 1" grouping ( still very good) but I wanted high velocity and under 1/2 MOA. I got .60 MOA with a light load of 57 grains at 2,963 fps which is really good with only 57 grains Im going to try Reload 23 later on to see what velocity I can get but for this year Im sticking with H1000 60.5g with Federal 210 match. Funny I was using CCI 250 and I was flattening out primers like crazy. Federal 210 still had round edges I gotcha. That's honestly a very comparable powder charge/velocity i am getting. I'm shooting 62 grns 4831sc at about 3150fps Looking back at my notes using IMR 4831 at 59.8 grains I was 3150fps. I didn't put down a MOA number (meaning it wasn't worth writing down the bad grouping) -

That's really good I tried it with my mine but mine likes more powder. -

Same here!!! Super fast and very affordably -
I haven't order a gun online yet, but looking into guns broker.com they said to ship it to an FFL Dealer. I understand it can only go to a licence dealer but when I hit search there are like 15 people within 5 miles of me. Some have their own in house store and online guns. How does this work? Do I tell the company to send it to them and pay a service fee or just use one of these guys online gun store and go directly through them? Have you guys done this much? Any recommendation of someone in the east valley around elliot and recker?

That may be true if the SAUM is hot rodded and the 260 is ran at factory pressures. You and I both know people trying to squeeze every fps possible out of those 260 size cases are at the limit of pressure and chewing up barrels faster than they need to. Even the 47L guys are leaning on them pretty hard and developing crazy pressures before the capability just runs out well below 3,000 fps. That SAUM was specifically brought into the light in the last few years because it hits that 3100 fps mark at mediocre pressures without leaning on it. You mentioned speed=wear but left out the pressure and heat that erodes throats and kills barrels. Doesnt need to be debated as it's already been proven. 2013 Sniper Hide Cup was won with a SAUM that ended the comp with 4000ish rounds through it. I have factory brass with 8 reloads and still going strong with tight primer pockets. A good friend has more than 10 reloads on a small batch of the same brass and still going. It's not the be all, end all but it does exactly what it was developed to do (130-140s @3100-3200fps) and it does it at lower pressures than the smaller cased offerings stuffed full of 4350. Good luck to the OP choosing a chambering. If you have any specific questions about the 4S I'd be happy to lend my experience with it after owning creeds. Sounds cool but Stomp442 already built me a sweet 6.5-270 AI pushing a Hornday 143 ELD-X at 3,120 fps with under 1/2 MOA. I wanted a tikka action so no short action for me. Lances SLR sounds cool and I've been messaging him about how easy it is to make those rounds. But Im not also a extreme die hard as Lance and Im not on the press every weekend (that is not an insult by the way). I think Im leaning over more to the 6.5x55 swede because I can just buy the brass and Im going with another tikka (no short action) I might as well take advantage of the length -
