Why do we love to hunt?

Parents grew up camping, camping, camping!!!! So the love of out doors was there. My dad still has the biggest buck in the family but he only went out a few times and thats it. Took me small game all the time but as a kid I longed to go hunting big game in the worst way. I day dreamed of being a guide in Montana as a kid and we did good at shooting guns all the time. Watch my friends off when they left to go hunting but not me. Dad never wanted to go. But it wasn't until I was 16 when I finally got to go out and bag my first big game!!! It was always there but sadly I was forced to wait

    New Mexico Landowner Cow Elk

When you really add it up for an elk hunt at home you are looking pretty close to 800 dollars-1500 dollars just to hunt. So thats a great deal

Alaska Trip Help (updated with trip report pics)

Been there and loved it!! But I agree with all the comments. I went up for just one all day fishing trip charter. With airlines, charter, rentals, shipping, it was a min of $2000( plan on almost 850-1000 dollars a day by the time the trip is over). There really isn't alot of back roads like they have in the lower 48. My whole drive from Anchorage to Seward (3 hour drive) I swear I only saw maybe 5 dirt roads off the side. Its thick and wet. I would try other places like said above. Maybe save a little more and make it an awesome trip.
  6. ohh thats funny I can't stop laughing!! Besides that, glad nothing bad came of it
  7. Im guessing you guys are talking about Landowner elk tags? I think this thread was more about draw antelope tags. I was talking about antelope tags but i was saying I saw elk way into the grass land that you think you wouldn't see them there.

    Monday Check in

Speaking of pull ups. I started really hitting pull ups 4 weeks ago. I could barley do 1 pull up. Mind to muscle activity for my lats struggled. Today I did 4 reps, 3 reps, 3 reps, 3 reps. So moving along for 2018
  11. I wounder that too! But I haven't heard of to many long range shots with copper. Only story I know is when Lance's daughter smacked that deer in the Bab i think over 700 yards and dropped it in their tracks. Im sure Lance will chime in and show the bullet recovery. But again I haven't heard of to many stories. But to answer the question I think I would def try them out for sure if BC is there.

    New Mexico Landowner Cow Elk

You gotta pay to play! Ive seen them for 800 dollars but the better ranches around 1500-2000 dollars for a cow tag
  18. Only 3 days yes! I was in the grass land down near a river where I saw some cow elk, so they are around. Once a rancher allows his tags to be bought out from a draw the ranch lets say is in unit 10 for example, everyone who has a tag in unit 10 is now legal to hunt in that ranch. But you can only hunt that ranch boundaries. If you bought it straight from the rancher for 2k dollars and he doesn't allow it to go through the draw or let an outfitter on the property then the only tag hunters can hunt that ranch boundaries.

    Removable Brake question

You bring up a good point that I struggled with for a while. I used to randomly pack up for hunts (pack, pouches, pockets, etc) randomly filling space. A few years ago I decided to start designating pockets for certain things and do not deviate from it. For example, X pocket always has ear plugs, pocket knife, etc. Y pocket always has the range finder, calls, etc. This has made a big difference for me, I'm no longer searching though various pockets, pouches, etc when I need something since I know it is always in the same place. It take a little discipline, but it has helped me a ton. Yes Great point with the same pockets. I do the same and practice going over pockets and know where everything is at. Most people just throw it in and when the time comes your scrambling around. A few years ago I read a book, the author was a Navy Seal who was with Chris Kyle on his tour and he always said they practice and kept the same pattern where they kept their batteries, maps, etc etc. He always said in his book what made Seals very efficient in the field was "slow is smooth, smooth is fast"
