I got to take my 6 year old son and my 9 year old daughter out for squirrels. Thanks for all the help from my previous thread. I nailed 2 and my son got one. First shot and first kill! It was a tough shot and he tried setting up on him about 4 times. Arms getting tired, and bad ammo. Finally when the 22 went off dropped it from 40ft up. I couldn't stop laughing because I couldn't believe he made that shot!!! They really had a blast. My daughter had such a good attitude. When we lost the first one we chased she said happily " well at least we saw one" Ha ha. She got on a couple but couldn't make it happen. But she had a good attitude.

Western hunting is awesome! Unit 23 has plenty of mule deer and coues. You can do your thing and lots of people do it. But the bow rut hunters live for more open spot and stalk hunting. I love getting to a vantage point and glass and glass looking for moving deer rutting. All the big guys come out and you make your move. Your moving around more, your seeing more and you get plenty opportunity to put on stalks. You can bed them, you can cut them off and wait while they are pushing deer towards you. Or you can just try to sneak up on them. Its common out west to shoot at 45-60 yards at deer because of lack of vegetation. Just practice at 70 yards all the time and your 45-50 yard shots will be easier. Good luck and tell us what your going to do and keep us updated on your hunts. You can tell people about your units but keep your location to yourself or you will find 10 people in your spot the following week.

congrats those are some nice bucks

There are monster coues in every unit. Late tags are good but I also know many people bagging 100 inch plus in Oct and Nov. Good luck

I thought it would be a fun question to ask. Ive met guys who go out every other weekend to scout and be out doors. Then stay a whole 8-14 days on a hunt even if their hunt is only 6 days long. I talked to a guy in elk camp this year and they take 2 weeks for Javalina. They go before it starts, scout, hunt, and then hang out afterwards when the hunt is over. I personally know So I Hunt on the forum and when its elk season he will be on his hunt a whole week before it starts so almost a total of 3 week hunt. AKA takes it very seriously So from 1 through 10, while One is just a weekend warrior, never practice shooting, scouting, just shows up the day of the hunt and hopes for the best. While Ten being the Die hard, scouting many days for their hunts, practice shooting their choice of weapon all the time, plans on hiking in or not afraid of it, plans on being there before the hunt and the entire time the hunt is on! Now im not knocking anyone if they say they are a 1 weekend warrior. There are times I do that!. But I also get when I have a bigger hunt Im willing to scout more and stay lot longer then needed. So as for me I would say Im a -----5------

Taking the kids squirrel hunting
Zeke-BE posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Taking the kids on their first hunt tomorrow morning. A 6 and a 8 year old. They both have little savage chipmunk 22s.. We practice walking around in the house about gun safety ๐ I haven't hunted squirrels since I was a kid but the plan was to go up north of Stawberry, or go the eastern route towards Heber and go on the 300 rd. Unless other people have better ideas? CJ has suggested other routes below the rim but Im not familiar to much with the area he has suggested. Are those areas worth going to ?
