280AI is a perfect all around gun. 300 win mag will do it all as well but more powder and bigger kick. If its just for big guys for elk stick with the 300. But my pick is the 280AI

Berger VLDs Let Me Down - Suggestions???
Zeke-BE replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
You very well could be right. But the hunter has seen the possible paper trails that lead to their conclusion and no longer believes in them. Two times in a row he lost confidence. If hunters don't believe in them just change. Right or wrong you still need to believe in your shooting and how your rounds performs. If you have concerns and feel better with something else well do it. -
No just went home. Nothing but rain. I really wanted to stay and if finished early do some fishing. Didn't have lots of rain gear

Berger VLDs Let Me Down - Suggestions???
Zeke-BE replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
We could see the shot hit vitals and hit ground behind. Bull dropped like a sack of potato's from 700 yard shot. Then got back up and staggered off. Next to no blood. Maybe a total of 5 drops of blood. Followed tracks for well over a mile. Got lost in a mix of tracks and finally found a baby drop bloop spot on some existing snow and kept tracking. Night came and went back the next day and tracked again and lost it in the mist of other tracks. We grid the area most of the day. To say it pencil through exactly we don't know other then bullet penetrated all the way through and can see dirt behind. From more research with the weight of the bullet and velocity from other sites and forums have seen a connection with the 210s slowing down past 500 yards have been seen and documented by other hunters that at slowed down long range 210s bergers pencil through. Couple years later on another cow hunt he shot the same distance on a cow and killed. Once we got up there it pencil through (the exit) and after that he switched his bullet out. So from experience and investigation Ive seen lots of info about the 210s doing this. Do I still believe in them? Yes! These aren't happening all the time and remember this round is probably one of the most used big 30 cal round used today!! So lot more shots have been taken and lot more info on kills, and of course your going to see lot more fails on it too because so many use it. (law of large numbers) -

Congrats on the BULL. Ive read about blogs and forums about every bullet failing and performing well. I was with a friend with a 30-378 210vld fail as well and pencil through. Never recovered the bull. Ive shot a mule deer with 140 grain accubond went 10 ft and died. It penciled through no expansion. Ive smoked a whitetail with 142smk at 400 dead in its tract. Smoked a antelope 400 yards in its bed and never got up with a fist size hole on the exit. Last year I shot a antelope with a 300 win mag ELD-m and put a huge hole on the exit and stayed alive for a few mins and kept kicking for ever with its lungs like soup and heart hit. Just yesterday I shot a another antelope in Wyoming (again) at 400 yards with the 142smk little in the front part of the vitals. He ran off 100 yards. While I knew I hit him I wanted him anchored down. Shot again hit him just in the neck meat. He then beaded down quarter away from me. I snuck up to 250 yards. The dude looked very alive. I shot again while beaded and hit him quarter away. A clearly thump sound and the dude doesn’t even move or even flinched. So we just watch him and then all of a sudden he starts kicking around and lays dead. I investigate may first shot and find my bullet broken up into 3 pieces about 2” apart and shredded through his organs. The quart shot hit behind the ribs and a quarter inch hole on the exit out his ribs. But for some reason he use kept going. Never has happen to me. One tough goat. Then 20 mins later my brother with his creedmoor shoots a goat with his sierra game king shoots through a shoulder pencils through the other side and drops like a rock!!! No expansion on it but hit the right stuff! Weird My point is bullets hit just right, perform just right, kill just right, and some times it misses everything or fails. But Ive heard more story’s about the 210vld then any other hunting bullet personally. Give the hybrids a try and I heard guys really liking the ELD-m and x on elk. -
Yeah last day should be given out or raffled out with no cost of BPs

Its my fault!! Im not making excuses. When you interview people and they claim they can do xyz and put them to work they can't perform. Everybody that we have hired from Washington, Idaho, Utah have more training programs perform better than local Arizona guys. As a "whole"more training equals better results (the masses) but most people don't think outside the masses and only perform what they are taught and don't elevate themselves. Anybody that does elevate themselves usaully end up being Foreman's, Project manger, or their own business. No matter how society teaches the masses will always be the majority. Im for the free enterprises but you leave it up to the masses no ones does it. Its like asking children if they want to go to school. They don't want to do it. And somethings needs to be in place (children need to go to school not a choice). Or we have the majority of the people uneducated and ignorant thats what happens when children don't go to school. Its self evident here in Arizona with trades, and self evident with hunting. Doctors need continue education, Lawyers, Teachers, Plumbers (self promoting), OSHA, Nurses, Mechanics, US Military etc, etc............. but NOT Hunting Heaven Forbid!!!!! These are just some thoughts Please lay out a plan how to get quality hunters back into Arizona and teach them once they draw blood you forfeit your tag?? "We've lost that in this country" please lay that out for a plan?? How do we take it back?? I have some other ideas and I know most of this is taught in the home which most ethics back in the good ol days was done. How do we get that back as a society??? I know what needs to be done in my home to teach ethic and safety which is by far the best way to teach the younger generation but how do we instill that in the minds of the masses??

Every bone in my body screams conservative! But in only 2 areas. One managing hunting and the second I wish made it a mandatory apprenticeship programs in AZ like Utah, and Washington. Still a right to work state but they cant do their trade unless they are in the program. In my experience these people are lot more skilled. Ive hired plumbers who has been plumbing 15 years and can't read plans or now the plumbing codes. We lack in knowledge and it keeps us stupid in the trade with out education. Now for hunting I wish they did have a hunter safety course for archery and a state wide mandatory hunter safety Like Wyoming and Colorado. I would one up it and say every few years you need to up date the safety course as well. Couple things will happen. 1. This does weed out the yahoos because its to much work for them to complete leaving more for me and you. 2. WE are being educated more and more on ethics and safety keeping stupid stories like this out of hunting. Now I know this logic is very Left (Blue) but I don't see another way! The right (Red) isn't right about everything and the Left isn't wrong with everything either. Some things do make since. I do get it though you add one law and then many more will come and then be like California. But us die hards won't have a problem doing extra classes to go hunting.

Bringing this back!!! Any updates on your range finders?? I have a L1600B but in New Mexico was having a hard time with it. No dark objects and hard to come up with range. Not sure if these other ones are having that problem. Lance your post was a year ago about the G7 any knew news about it. And why do you guys love the Sig over the G7? Details, details!

Zeke-BE replied to Ldonovan's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Stay in that area and scout. You will find bucks. Rut wont' happen till late December- middle of January. Usually couple weeks into January -
How did you do with ear protection. I know in the heat of the moment a non muzzle break doesn't ring my ears. But a break it doesn't matter. But I always keep ear plugs in my pocket

Unit 33 pick a mountain side to work on and you will find deer

Congrats! I second a story for this beast

In the past 5 years Ive hit everything on purpose from 350-500 yards and miss one antelope with a scope coming lose!! But I practice from 500 yards to 1000 yards. A few weeks ago in New Mexico with Stanley and Lances hunt I crawled 130 yards and the skin on my knees came off. Had to sit at a sitting position and my back bipod head came off so that was out. Then it was so flat I couldn't get a range on him. I guessed 300 yards. Missed. The next day we spotted my buddies buck and drove toward him and the mean time my buck just ran in front of us. Man the luck! I got out and try to do a stand up shooting shot at 100 yards and missed while he was running. I got prone and he stopped in a perfect broadside shot. My buddy called out 430 yard. I dialed breath out and held my breath and pulled the trigger. Nothing!!! Crap in the excitement I forgot to chamber a round. He took off. I let my buddy take my truck and I was in pursuit. Covered about 1/2 mile over the hill. I got set up behind a pinon and again it was perfectly flat! Couldn't range him. Came up 20 yards or 600 yards. Well he looked 300 yards! Dial to that and shot over him. Crap!! He was lot closer than I thought. Chased him up a hill. My buddy called and told me he just shot his buck. I was excited. Hung up and then those antelope stood up and my buck. Again I was in another flat spot. Couldn't range. He looked close to 100 yards. Extended out my bipods and kneed. Crap grass to high. Can just see his horns. He started moving and I thought maybe stand up and shoot. Should of could of would of moment and he hurried up and started moving and I shot through the grass and missed. This time he ran off and was gone. Crap. My buddy picked me up and we process his buck. I spotted Lances Daughter buck they were after and called him in. At this time we were heading home. ON the way home buddy spots a massive heavy buck. Same thing flattttttt! I got on top of my truck and ranged him at 420. Got off and ran to the fence. Grass is to high for sitting. But I had to put a knee down with no skin and put my gun on a wavy fence post. It moved back and forth. I shouldn't of shot but I did. I could tell in the shot it was just over the back. I went after him and got set up for a 700 yard shot. I took my time for a good shooting position. It was pretty flat, middle of the day, heat waves everywhere and a shaky hand kept saying 720 yards and 890 yard back and forth. I saw 720 twice so it had to be that. The wind died down and shot! Way low. He must of been 890 900 yards then. I called it quits after that. Yeah many years of success but this time everything was against me and shooter error! This year 6 missed shots I couldn't believe it
