He said he is going into the wilderness. Queen valley and peralta aren't in the wilderness. If he was to hike in to the wilderness from there, he would be in deer country. South of Tucson brings a new set of considerations to the table for somebody who is not familiar with the border. No one even mentioned 37b, and since he specifically mentioned coues in the wilderness I don't think you have anything to worry about. No need to try and protect your spots from this non-scouter. Flatlander it sounds like I stuck a nerve with your 24 b unit if you got to point out all my flaws. I was just pointing out other options if his wilderness adventure doesn't work out and have to hunt closer to towns. If I was going out of town I would at least have a plan B. The only wilderness I've hunt is 24b. But if we can't make it in for whatever reason he can still hunt other parts of the units that doesn't involve a bunch a quads which is right next to the wilderness ( Queens valley area). I'll try to be a little more specific next time.

For a unit to just show up 24 b is not the choice for you. It has a lot of deer and it's a great unit if you know the spots to hit. Stay away from queen valley and peralta trail. It's full of weekend warriors quad and target shooters. If you do do that unit and want to head to a ( spot ) that doesn't need much scouting and just show up back pack into the wilderness. If you head south of Tucson most of those units you can pick a area and do ok. If you don't care if it's couse or mule hang out at the base of the mountains you will get a mix of mule and couse deer. Find a ridge and glass the flats and turn around and glass the slops. Stay away from 37b. That is a unit only for hunters who put the time into scouting. Good luck

I've seen lots of good spots on these trail cameras. Lots of good areas with seep holes. I'm just curious how many miles are you guys putting on the boots to find these spots or am I not alone in struggling in finding a spot and should just stick to what i know which is Glassing and Glassing?

Ok lancetkeyon I got some new information. I went out today to mess around with new loads. But something's are still off but it might not matter if I like the loads. My last velocity on those round that I started with on the forum were slow but my brothers factory Winchester round shooting 150 grain vs my 140 grain was shooting 2780 ft to 2800 fps. So we pulled one of his rounds apart and it weighed 47 grains of what it looks like Winchester powder (the small BBs type). My buddy had some W760 and loaded 53 grain max on the nosler book and I got 3000 fps and the book says 3018 (close enough) and we up one to 54 grains and got 3064 fps but the bolt got sticky and bulge the primer, so I stopped right away. Then I retried the H4831sc which we had a mistake and loaded it to the max of the IMR 4831 (which is 53.5 grains). This explains why that load was so slow. But it still doesn't add up to well. I shot the Max load according to Nosler Book at 58 grains. The book says 3000 fps but I got 2810 fps. I then shot a Winchester brass of what you said Lance earlier but it shot 90 fps slower. I cant be sure exactly I didn't load to many Winchester brass. Then I loaded the 4831 up to 59 grains and got 2850 fps, then loaded 60.5 grains and got 2945 fps, my brass is almost topped out but it showed no sign of wear on the brass and no sticky bolt. Lance with your H4831sc you have 57.5 grains and shooting 2900 fps and shooting the 150 grain bullet and still passing my 140 grain accubond. Could this be truly the brass for this cause?? Or primer? I haven't tried a different primer yet. My brain starting to hurt!! Also if my W760 works out I might go with that. I have never used it before so does any one have any experience on that Powder???

Thanks Mill house, I did read 5:30 mountain time but your right it's midnight. So I got one!

I followed your link Average Joe. One problem about the points. To buy a bonus point it ended 30 minutes, maybe a little longer since it is on Mountain time. Bummer !!!!!!!

Need Help with choosing .243 or 7mm-08 Remington/Savage or Ruger???
Zeke-BE replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Youth Hunters
I have the Tikka T 3 in a 270. The gun is light weight and I have a Limbsaver on it. Feels good in the hand and the bolt is very smooth. The savage to me feels cheap, but there is lots of up grades for them. In the end shooting a deer to 100 yards to 200 yards with a cheap brand or a high end brand it's going to do the job just fine. If you are going switch his gun out in the future just get him the .243. If a long term gun get the 7mm 08. Personally I just want to get both!!!! -
Everybody I talk to has 20-25 points and I got 4 Measly points, so i opt out and went to New Mexcio this year at the end of August So now I got one!!!! It was a lot of fun and now I'm investagsting wyoming. If you can shed any more details to start that would be awesome.

They do overlap a lot! I used to bow hunt that area and whatever type of breed of buck stepped in front of me I was willing to take a shot at him. I've seen couse from apache lake all the way up to globe. Pick an area and Glass Glass Glass
-
It's very realistic to just scout from the computer show up, glass and find bucks. I've done it many times do to work, or f Financial reasons when I couldn't make it out scouting. Two years agos I couldn't do any scouting and showed up 2 hours late opening morning and just pick a good ridge. After an hour I got onto a nice 95" buck but messed up on the shot. But everybody is right just Glass and Glass!!

According to my Nosler book, your loads are a far cry from published velocities. You are using their preferred primers (Fed 210 LR), but you never mentioned case brand/head stamp. They loaded with Winchester cases. If you use a different case, it could have different capacity, causing either lower pressure/lower velocity, or high pressure/higher velocities.47.0gr. RL15 (published max) should net you about 2832fps.53.5gr. IMR4350 is over published max load of 52.5 which should net you about 2858fps, so your load should be even hotter.55.0gr. RL19 (published max) should net you about 3003fps.These are all book loads, so take them for what they are worth as far as "Max". Books are usually very safe on what they will publish as a max load for liability reasons. My head case/ stamp which I believe you are talking about the brass, is Nosler ( I'm still new to reloading). I have it set at 3.330 which barley fits in my Tika magazine, which slightly pushes back as I chamber it . But I do apologize my buddy wrote down IMR 4350. It was loaded H4831c. But I don't remember if we loaded it to the max at the H4831 or loaded it at the IMR. If we did load it at the max for the IMR I would be almost 4 grains short for the H4831. I'll take one apart and weigh it. But my other powders are according to the Nosler Book.

That was my idea. Can changing a primer change the speed up to 1-200 fps faster?

Dove done by 7am
Zeke-BE replied to Couzer's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I haven't seen a place to shoot dove off of Ellsworth for years. You must be packing it in somewhere? -
I use my buddies electronic scale. Then we would double check it with a. Manual scale.

Predator I'm using Chrony. But I think it's on! I also tested it out on my brother factory Winchester round that stated it was shooting 2850 fps. I punched a couple through my rifle and Chrony was saying 2805 fps.

Maximus I've hunted that same private ranch the summer before last just to say I did it. I shot a 700 lb Russian hog. It was a beast it literally took four shots before it went down from my .270. Good eatin. The web site is fortrockhuntimg.com. But I have never seen feral hogs before. I would send a picture but don't know how to do it off the iPad .

That's my guess about the population. Unit one always has water and as a kid and young adult I've seen many deer. But ever since wolves came to be it's just been less and less every year.
-
Hello everyone I'm pretty new to the forum. From what I've read it sounds like there is a lot of good people on here. My question though is how to hunt deer in unit 1. This is a hunt that I'm already planning on for next year 2015 September. I've camped this area around big lake and west fork my entire life and know it very we'll. I love the beauty of it so this is more of a 50/50 hunt. 50% hard hunting and 50% just enjoying being up there with the family and friends. The problem is that I'm a desert spot and stalk hunter and I'm not sure how to hunt the pines. I have notice the deer is a lot lower in numbers than I've seen in the past 5-8 years. Any ideas or expertise would be great?
-
Nice!! You guys got me excited too bad I didn't do it this year, i'll do some of my desert hunting but I'm gonna go all outt up in the Pines September next year. In unit one is it really busy with archery deer hunters?

Quail season is coming
Zeke-BE replied to Coues assassin's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Average-joe if you want me to help you out to get these quail scared of hunters I can do that for free. No charge. I always hunt without dogs. My best hunt was 7 birds in a half day. It was a great spot, little hunting traffic in 37b about 6 years ago. Every year that area and the surrounding areas was less and less. Last year I only had 1 quail jump up and that was at my friends feet 60 yards away. Went back to some old areas and it was dead too. Hopefully 37b will pick up in the future. -
What about mount baldy wilderness? I know it's really thick. Use a tree stand, or wait on a game trail ? Or just stick with burns?

Thanks lancetkenyon! Will they bed down in those area or do they head for cover?
