    first time mule deer hunt

What Edge said! Just go north from where your from. Honestly a lot of my time for archery was a side gig hunt. I usually focused on rifle, and when I didn't bag out I would go on a day hunt with my bow just to get out and hunt. I had no plans I just found a spot hiked in, glass, hiked, glass. Without any scouting i shoot at a little spike and missed, stalked a really big 2x2 mule, and put on a 1-1/2 hour stalk on a 190 inch mule deer (no joke). And yes no luck got busted by a doe. These were all close within 25-40 minutes. Just make it your scout/hunt all in one. If your dead set on bow hunting and really want something then you really need to put the time out in the field. And yes it's very common to hike miles and miles and glass and glass and not see anything. Then 2 weeks later same spot you spook up 3 bucks and glass 5 more. It's the name of the game. Good luck

    I dont understand

I actually agree with you, I was asking 300 why he thought that to build off my comment made in the post about spot and stalk or blind and tree stand sitting. I say that because it takes absolutely zero skill set to sit on your a$$ in a ground blind or in a tree stand over water and kill something. Someone actually tried to say that it's not easy finding a spot to put a ground blind or tree stand, any numb skull could figure out to set it next to water or near a large game trail. Anyways, I agree, back east "hunting" isn't really hunting. It's waiting and killing. My favorite part is when they get dressed up in all the camo and all the scent cover sprays and then go sit in an elevated blind over a corn field with windows and a heater. Go get 'em! Haha Or start crying after they shot their monster buck from their elevated stand ,shooting through their open glass window, on top of their food plot, and feeder. Seems like most of them are like that. Raley have I've seen any stalks in the thick bush. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't go back east and shoot off a tree stand on a game trail to shot a nice eastern buck.
  3. Hey guys I've seen many pictures of guys hunting deer that they have tripod attachments that you clamp to your rifle. I've taken an antelope this year by shooting off my tripod just sitting it right on top, and figured that shooting would be a whole lot more accurate with an attachment. Where do you find these?

    OK, who does this?

And yes I think once or twice I have had a retarded moment in my hunting career so sorry to any one I have wronged.

    OK, who does this?

I'm convinced that 1/4 of the population is retarded. These people are the ones with no filters, no common courtesy, no common since, no respect for others and their property. These are the guys that say F it it's your problem and not mine. Unfortunately these people breed and teach their young the same pattern. So yes 1/4 of people are like this. So when you are in a hunt with 400 tags, there are 100 people retarded people hunting with you. The real question how do we Tolerate these people because sadly they are not going away? . Sorry about your hunt!

    My 12 yr old son's 1st coues!

"He was ok with it" !!!! That's a great buck! I think he's spoiled after his first 4x4 muley and this deer didn't quite meet his standard. Ha ha ha . That's awesome the young kids can bag out with some great bucks! Good job

    Antelope in Wyoming 2014

I did a New Mexico hunt this year with a guide, but I really want to do a DIY trip in Wyoming. Any tip on what unit to pick and easy access to state land? Also can't you get more than 1 buck tag? I took average joe advice and bought a point.

Money for Glassing deer. That's a great idea. I think there needs to be a limit after the 3 rd year

    Optimizing Glassing For Coues Bucks

Depends on the area. If i am in a location where I only have less then a 180 degrees from side to side and less then 800 yards I'll move more often or just go over the other side of the ridge and glass. If I got more than 180 degrees from side to side and a mile out its very common to stay there for hours in one spot. Depending on some spots and landscape I've brought in lawn chairs and a few sodas and glasses very comfortable for a few hours

    Optimizing Glassing For Coues Bucks

Couse 7 I never thought about Glassing the shadows in the morning. I always did that when it warmed up. I'm keeping a mental note of that. My advise is what everybody has said. Then one more advise for the October hunts I've been in 100 degree weather before and wonderful cool weather. But when it stays hot I did notice during the morning at the base of the mountains, in ravines or small canyons ( Physics) that cold air would settle down there and I would find groups of deers up to 10 bedded down there, bucks as well. Every hot hunt it was like that. When you did make your way through it, it was really nice and cool.

    37A&B input/suggestions

I've been hunting quail by the black mountain for over a decade. I have not once seen a pig. Seen tracks and smelled them before. This is mainly on the north side. I never remember the name of the areas really well but on the east side of black mountain you will see a radio tower. Just east of that I got into some heavy quail and found some abandon mines with hundreds of piggy tracks. I kept a mental note of that area and when I left and open the gate I realize there is no trespassing sign on the ground which would make since why the quail were so easy. The next year I went back there were brand new signs and very clear postings of no trespassing. Maybe Hoover around the ranch property and maybe you will find one around there. I believe this is the same direction snapshot is talking about.

    HELP PLEASE

I am assuming this is at 100 yards right! 2-3 inches is a lot. Are you shooting from a sled/ stand or is it off your shoulder and tri pod? When I shoot from the shoulder on a tri pod or bag I'll be in 2-3 in grouping at 100 and be around 3-4 at 200'yards. I'm not the most advid shooter but that's what I get shooting off the shoulder. Off the sled strapped down I'll be an 1" or less. If you are using the sled maybe your mounts are not totally tighten down. That my guess. I'm new to loading so I have no advice with the powder. Good luck

    coues wilderness jan hunt

He said he is going into the wilderness. Queen valley and peralta aren't in the wilderness. If he was to hike in to the wilderness from there, he would be in deer country. South of Tucson brings a new set of considerations to the table for somebody who is not familiar with the border. No one even mentioned 37b, and since he specifically mentioned coues in the wilderness I don't think you have anything to worry about. No need to try and protect your spots from this non-scouter. Flatlander it sounds like I stuck a nerve with your 24 b unit if you got to point out all my flaws. I was just pointing out other options if his wilderness adventure doesn't work out and have to hunt closer to towns. If I was going out of town I would at least have a plan B. The only wilderness I've hunt is 24b. But if we can't make it in for whatever reason he can still hunt other parts of the units that doesn't involve a bunch a quads which is right next to the wilderness ( Queens valley area). I'll try to be a little more specific next time.

    coues wilderness jan hunt

For a unit to just show up 24 b is not the choice for you. It has a lot of deer and it's a great unit if you know the spots to hit. Stay away from queen valley and peralta trail. It's full of weekend warriors quad and target shooters. If you do do that unit and want to head to a ( spot ) that doesn't need much scouting and just show up back pack into the wilderness. If you head south of Tucson most of those units you can pick a area and do ok. If you don't care if it's couse or mule hang out at the base of the mountains you will get a mix of mule and couse deer. Find a ridge and glass the flats and turn around and glass the slops. Stay away from 37b. That is a unit only for hunters who put the time into scouting. Good luck

    Finding Honey Holes

I've seen lots of good spots on these trail cameras. Lots of good areas with seep holes. I'm just curious how many miles are you guys putting on the boots to find these spots or am I not alone in struggling in finding a spot and should just stick to what i know which is Glassing and Glassing?

    Help with .270 Reload

Ok lancetkeyon I got some new information. I went out today to mess around with new loads. But something's are still off but it might not matter if I like the loads. My last velocity on those round that I started with on the forum were slow but my brothers factory Winchester round shooting 150 grain vs my 140 grain was shooting 2780 ft to 2800 fps. So we pulled one of his rounds apart and it weighed 47 grains of what it looks like Winchester powder (the small BBs type). My buddy had some W760 and loaded 53 grain max on the nosler book and I got 3000 fps and the book says 3018 (close enough) and we up one to 54 grains and got 3064 fps but the bolt got sticky and bulge the primer, so I stopped right away. Then I retried the H4831sc which we had a mistake and loaded it to the max of the IMR 4831 (which is 53.5 grains). This explains why that load was so slow. But it still doesn't add up to well. I shot the Max load according to Nosler Book at 58 grains. The book says 3000 fps but I got 2810 fps. I then shot a Winchester brass of what you said Lance earlier but it shot 90 fps slower. I cant be sure exactly I didn't load to many Winchester brass. Then I loaded the 4831 up to 59 grains and got 2850 fps, then loaded 60.5 grains and got 2945 fps, my brass is almost topped out but it showed no sign of wear on the brass and no sticky bolt. Lance with your H4831sc you have 57.5 grains and shooting 2900 fps and shooting the 150 grain bullet and still passing my 140 grain accubond. Could this be truly the brass for this cause?? Or primer? I haven't tried a different primer yet. My brain starting to hurt!! Also if my W760 works out I might go with that. I have never used it before so does any one have any experience on that Powder???

I followed your link Average Joe. One problem about the points. To buy a bonus point it ended 30 minutes, maybe a little longer since it is on Mountain time. Bummer !!!!!!!
  25. I have the Tikka T 3 in a 270. The gun is light weight and I have a Limbsaver on it. Feels good in the hand and the bolt is very smooth. The savage to me feels cheap, but there is lots of up grades for them. In the end shooting a deer to 100 yards to 200 yards with a cheap brand or a high end brand it's going to do the job just fine. If you are going switch his gun out in the future just get him the .243. If a long term gun get the 7mm 08. Personally I just want to get both!!!!
