2014 Coues Deer Kill Distances Poll
Zeke-BE replied to Little Creek Calls's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
My hunt begins when I turn in my application. It continues all spring/summer as I practice, practice, practice and scout, scout, scout. It continues as I prepare in the months before a hunt. It keeps going in the fall as the air turns crisp and the animals are being watched and photographed. Then, after about 7 months into my hunt, I can actually pursue the game animal I have been dreaming about for years, months, weeks, and days. A few days before season opener, I am out again scouting in preparation for opening morning. Then, God willing, I get to take a game animal sometime in the next 7-10 days. Is my hunt over? Absolutely not. It is now just beginning my hunt for the next time I draw a tag and get the blessing to be out enjoying what I love. Hunting is not just about the kill. It is the entire experience, anticipation, frustration, exhaustion, elation, and satisfaction of knowing you did everything you could for that one chance at filling your freezer and feeding your family, and also possibly hanging some antlers on the wall and some bragging rights and giving thanks to God for His creations. And if you get to spend it with family, the hunt continues when your kids are born. So my daughter's hunt began 12 years ago. And so far during her hunt, she has taken a javelina at 18 yards, and a bull elk at 160 yards. We hope to get her another tag in the next couple years. Until then, her hunt will continue with pursuing coyotes, shooting long range, getting some doves and squirrels, maybe a duck or two, bunnies, and whatever else we get the opportunity to chase and harvest. If it takes being 30 yards from a game animal to get my blood pumping and adrenalin flowing, I might as well quit hunting. Personally, I get a rush seeing does in June, let alone a big buck or bull during hunting season from a mile and a half away. Lance and Huntharder are spot on!! The hunter decides what's enjoyable. I bow hunt and rifel hunt. This last weekend I was just out calling coyotes, and in the middle of the day practicing at 700 yard on a plate. First time I hit that far. Took me 4 shots with 10-12 mph winds to hit a 12" plate. The other 3 shots I missed it only by inches, but thanks to a lot of guys on this forum helped me get my load on my .270. To me that's hunting just getting there was a thrill. 300 yards and 400 yards is cake!. This January I was out with the bow chasing a nice buck that was rutting, 300 yards was nothing exciting, until I watched my brother put a stalk on it, because it's the mentality of choice of weapon you're using at e given moment. Just in November I shot my tiny forker, which has been many years since I've taken a deer, at 300 yards and believe me the rush was unreal!!! I love both bow and rifle, close and far for both weapons, I just love to hunt. -

Can you verify the steady of the rifle? Example did you flinch a little bit up when you pulled the trigger? That is flat!! My standard .270, 3000 fps accurbond at 100 yards is 2" high, at 200 yards it 4-1/2" high and zeroed in at 300 and at 500 yards is 5 MOA which I don't remember in inches but I believe it is exceeding 35-40 inches. Most guns after 350-400 yards start dropping like a rock. You need to go out and shoot that gun and see what' it's doing and tell us your secret

Sako A7, Browning Xbolt, Weatherby Fibermark, opions?
Zeke-BE replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
This summer I'm on the same quest for a 300 win mag. But I shoot a .270 tikka and been hitting plate at 700 yards this weekend. I love my gun and the tikka but want a bigger caliber for those 4-600 yard elk shots. So why not. 26" barrel tikka??? That's what I'm planning on and getting a Bell and Carlson Tikka custom stock. I think it was B and C I need to,double check. Sweet looking stocks with a tikka bolt!! Tikkas has the smoothest over the counter rifle bolts I have ever used. But this is my opinion, but let us know which one you get. -
Can't remember if it was 15 or 17 at bass pro

I am heading down south for a coyote hunt. I've hunted down there many years. Since Arizona now lets you use more than five rounds, so out of curiosity, can you stuff a magazine with FMJ and leave the first 5 rounds with varmint hunting rounds? The rest are more of a quick get away, for example let's say you hiked in and by chance you just stumbled across drug smuggles and one has an AK and decides to take a shot. By extinct I'm sure I would hit the deck, and maybe get a shot off in his direction, and he rest of my magazine would be running away suppressive shooting shots as we get away. Obviously both sides of the parties will probably be running away from the situation. And I'm more then likely to die in a car wreck getting there then that happening. But my guess everyone and game and fish will say just load it up with the hunting rounds and you won't have a problem! The more and more I'm typing this up the more silly it sounds. Well! I've wrote this much down I might as well post it.

I remember your first post in how you asked for a close area and if someone wants to give up a small buck so you can fill the freezer. Then later on you asked again about you helping out a new hunter and if someone can give you information close to town. Now your asking the same thing for coyotes. A little hint! Close to home areas are rare, so if anyone has a spot most people don't know about for deer, pig, yotes, whatever, I would never give up that spot. You keep asking the wrong questions. These aren't question for assistance or help, these are questions; can you give up you secret close spots ( because anything close in my mind is a secret) so I don't have to drive far, scout, and make it easy for me off others people effort. That's what everyone is thinking when you post questions like that. Sorry but Mulepackhunter has a good answer!!! I'm doing the same thing this next weekend, I'm heading down to the 36 units lots of yotes. That is a 2-1/2 hour drive for me. I live in Gilbert and to get to any good hunt areas for yotes I still have to drive 40 min out. Are there closer spots than that? Yes but harder to find and get away from all the quads. Search the forum all over someone is bound to give up an area. Research, scout, ask the right questions and people help out!!!! Good luck and nail some yotes for us!!!!!

I have my Springfeild xd 40 in my finger print locked and loaded next to my bed. Plus my wife sig 380, ( for quick response), a short barrel shot gun in the closets (rounds are in the top drawer to keep kids away, 4 shot high brass) and the Ar-15 with side pouches loaded magazines. Have 300 rounds shotgun, 1000 rounds of 223, few hundred .270 rounds, 100 rounds 380, and 1000 rounds of .40. Of course all this is recreational and I enjoy hunting and shooting, but this is the minimal amount I keep. Everybody's prepping is different, but I prep for the Katrina type scenarios. I don't think this country is going to fall apart any time in my lifetime or that were forced to fight the government for any reason. But I am prepared for lawlessness that might happen. If a natural disaster happen that we lost power drinking water food for a long period time there might be a mass panic. Just like Katrina there were fire fights with defense contractors that were hired because police went home and was trying to support protect and help their families out. So if Phoenix and outer cities ever becomes a tombstone of modern-day for a few weeks or so at least I'm prepared with protection, 4 months of food, 2 months of water. Now if something did happen like that I know a lot of people will be out there helping each other out. More so then bad! But perhaps rougher cities or neighborhoods it could be different, or they might pour in your neighborhood. What's your prepping situation and what do you believe in? Any tactics or ideas?????

I'm with Lance a little more info why this area can't be hunted? I'm I'm curious.
