Muzzeloader Question
Gr8 White Jr replied to azbownunter22's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
I'm still shooting my Knight Wolverine I bought in 1996 when I was 14 and drew my 1st elk tag. I shoot open dights with 90 grains of pyrodex powder and a 385 grain conicle bullet. Shoots great out to 100 yds but pretty much hits the brakes and heads straight for the dirt after that. Some say I should upgrade but I have killed 3 elk, 2 javelina and an atelope with that set up and I am very stuborn and feel why fix something thats not broke. On the other hand my dad shoots the Knight Magnum Disc rifle. He shoots 150 grains of pyrodex pellets with a 285 grain sabot. It is scoped and he shoots unbelievably great with it. 3 inches high at 100yds and 4 to 5 inch groups at 200yds. Muzzleloaders sure have come along way in the past ten years. We both love our muzzys. It just depends on what set up you feel comfortable with. -
whitetail on unit 23 very low
Gr8 White Jr replied to isaluca's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Last year on my Unit 33 Nov hunt I killed a whitetail buck really low down in the muley country. Not sure if they are normally there or if they were pushed by the hunting pressure. My thoughts were that the pressure pushed them lower, that is why I decided to hunt low toward the end of the hunt. My buddy kikked a whitetail buck in unit 40 last year. Not sure of the exact elevation but it was some where around 2000 feet. I think if they must they will adapt to just about anything. -
Thats the thought that made my final decision to just leave it be.

Whoooo Hooooo! Drew Unit 33 Oct whitetail hunt. Had the Nov hunt last year and had a blast. Took an odd 5x2 last year. Was a wierd one but a good buck for my first whitetail. Also drew Unit 9 turkey. Good luck to all who drew tags! -
Nobody will probably believe this but I will tell you guys anyway because I swear it is true! Last year I bought a new AR34 from Corner Archery. I was was shooting in their indoor range at 20yds trying to get the frst 125 arrows through it before tuning it. After about ten minutes of shooting I got my first robin hood ever. I was so excited. The unbelievable part is that not even three minutes after I had got my first robinhood, I did it again. I couldn't believe it! After seven years of shooting archery I had never gotten a robin hood before and then in a mater of 2, maybe 3 minutes, I had done it twice. I was so glad I was at Corner and had witnesses! Ronda (store owner) didn't charge me for my range time because she said that in all the years she had an archery shop she had never seen or heard of anyone gitting two robin hoods that quick. After all I had to order another half dozen arrows from her because I had just wasted four. Expensive but worth it!

TLH is absolutely right! Just because a buck may only be 13 or 14 inches doesn't mean he wont score high. It is very tough to judge a lope but you have to pay attention to their mass every bit as much as their hieght. I took a decent buck in Unit 8 in 2002 on the muzzleloader hunt. He was only 14 1/2 inches tall but he still scored 78 5/8 because he had some mass. Nothing huge but not to bad for a 14 1/2 inch buck. Just remember its all about what you want and what you would consider a trophy. In my opinion any antelope is a trophy. There aren't too many people who get the chance to take one or even hunt one so just having that tag you allready have a trophy. Good luck buddy and let us know how it turns out. Gr8 White

Unit 33 Whitetail Nov 10-19 Unit 33 Javelina Nov 10-19 Usually I see pigs while I'm deer hunting and deer while I'm pig hunting so I'm guessing I probably won't see much of anything on this hunt! Actually, I am very excited! I hope to get a nice buck and a fat pig all in the same picture. My dad drew a Unit 9 archery bull tag

If I were you I would be out there trying to call on that lion!

I don't think that is going to be a problem. I give my buisness to no one other that Corner! Cabela's may be more popular but you will never get the personal customer service there that you get at Corner. At Cabela's you're a number, at Corner you're a friend! Just my opinion. Hey Mulie Hunter! How do you like that AR37? I bought an AR34 last year and I love it!

Que paso Kaffer62! I think you ment to say if you weren't in another unit you would be hoofing the hills about 200 yds behind me. That is untill I stop and wait for you to catch up. I'm just joking! I gotta hand it to you. I have never known anybody to follow me into the places you have. So you're going ot have to hurry up and shoot your 35" muley over in 42 so you can come hunt with me!

Hey hunt4horns! Just joined the sight last week. I drew a 33 coues tag also. Have you had this hunt before? Did you get the first or the second hunt. I got the second hunt and I also got a 33 javelina tag at the same time so I am hoping to kill two birds with one stone.

Thanks for the welcome and all the help! I figured it will be a crowded hunt since there are 725 tags. I am pretty good at getting away from people seeing as most hunters wont go as far on foot as I will. My hopes are high! Last years success rate was pretty good at 45%. I also drew a fall javelina tag for the same unit at the same time so we will see if I can kill two birds with one stone. Thanks again guys!
