What rifle are you taking on your elk hunt?
Huntn coues replied to Stray Horse's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I, too, have no faith in the -08's...... The .308 is a good cal...... but the .30 cal. bullet is what gets it done in that round... IMO. I never shoot my .308 any more cuz it kicks as hard as my bigger .300 wby mags. but it is still a good elk round. I'd much rather have a kid or a woman shooting a .270 than any -08..... the .270 is much more suitable for that all purpose gun. Personally.... I would Never own a 7mm-08..... I won one at a banquet and it was gone as soon as I found a guy that had a want for one.... never even took it out of the box! And of course... you will always see a .300 Wby Mag on my elk hunts!!!!! CnS Gino- The 7mm-08's that the girls shoot sure pummel everthing it hits. -
Start The Wait,Does It Make A Difference ?

Just got off the phone with azgfd and got some preliminary numbers for this year. They recieved 66,700 (and change) total applications for this year including all big game for the year.(elk and ant. included) Now they have a number that they use to average the total amount of people per app and they are coming up with 99,000 and change for this year but will not have an exact number untill they get all the info put in the draw process. Last year they had 107,000 (and change) total people. With those numbers and the possibility of multiple apps with bonus points only it could be a good year for those who put in. -

I will have to disagree with ya on this one. I will get the numbers for us and post em in the next day or so. I use to think the samething but after talking with some people in the draw department they gave me the overall numbers of the total people that applied over the last few years and regardless of paper or online they were within a nats a$$ of each other. I do think that the economy will have a impact on the draw this year as well especially Bighorn. -

There was another thread on this topic recently but as far as out of state hunters it does reduce them a little because they have to put the license fee up front with no refund if not drawn. IMO As far as paper vs online the numbers stay about the same year in and year out. -
Nice bear pic.. Lets see the wolf too!

Get of the roads and hunt and you will not see that! Hey Coues and Sheep I think he may have bumped into you once or twice!!! LMAO.......

What part of there is no difference do we not understand? The riff raff will alway's be there and the ones who can not find enough spit to seal the envelpoes will still be there!!!(they will borrow some from someone else) I for one do not give a rats butt because my family of 5 will put in either way because we are hunters. Online is just more to my liking. Do we actually think that the riff raff will disapear because they can use the internet???? Just look younghunter and Casey knows how to use one

I send mine in every time unlike some people I know -
+1 When you plan your scouting trips- Double them When you think you have classed enough- Double it Be in shape for a Quick move to get a shot. If you find a shooter figure him out the best you can and be in position WAY before daylight, You are Not the only one who knows about him. Have a couple back up Bulls. Welcome and good luck Well I have not hunted that unit much as you must have but the few times I have been there I have glassed up MANY elk time after time. Now that might just be that I am lucky or maybe I am just a fairly good at glassing but there is several GOOD areas to take a peep at IMO. Or maybe he can just walk around a bunch and leave his glass at home

Online or paper does not make any difference!!!! I have researched this for the last few years and accorrding to someone I know down there the numbers STAY the same year in and year out. IMO- I prefer the online process.

Well this turkey season was a pretty tuff one for me I just could not find many gobblers for the life of me except for 2. One who led me and a friend of mine on a mile and a half chase We ended up within 80 yards and could not seal the deal The second one my daughter my father-in-law and I got into was in roost a hour and a half before dark. We closed the distance to 30 yards and I spotted him. I was gonna wait for him to blow out of his roost before I took a crack at him. Well to make a long story short when I turned around to see if my daughter had the cam rolling and turned back to the Tom he was already in the get the heck outa here mode (and yeah I know Gino) so no bird for me. I hunted a total of eleven day's and seen countless hens and was able to put the wammy on a couple of yotes with my new chotgun My daughter and I even had a bear come into a tank we were sitting. Well I decided to sit a tank that I had seen lots of strut marks. I had sat this tank a couple of other times in the evening and saw no birds. I did manage to see a hen on this tank in the early a.m. one morning on my way to another set up. I had all but given up on the season when I called up Mike "bowhunter4life" for some advice. And all I can say is he hit the nail on the head! I had told him about this tank with tons of drumming/strutt marks and also told him about the hen that was on water early. He told me to get back on that tank and get set up a little before the time that I saw that hen which was 6:35 a.m. Well off I go.....Oh yeah BTW I had just got home and got unloaded when he told me this so I threw my gear back in the truck and drove the 2 hours back up there. Well there my father and I sit in the pop up when at 6:32 a.m. my dad says there is a bird coming. As the bird came in through the trees I kept looking for a beard and telling myself its a hen and about that time the bird took a drink and thats when I saw the beard and I pulled the trigger. The bird dropped in its tracks but about a minute later it flopped around al little and went right into the pond. While getting the bird out I noticed i had a tag in its wing and called it into AZGFD. As I was cleaning all the mud off the bird I confirmed it was indeed a hen sporting a 5 1/4 inch beard. I did some researech with G/F and found out this bird was transplanted as a juvy(spelling) as a bearded hen. She was captured on 2/07 in unit 23 and transplanted to Unit 21 on the west side of Pine mtn. Also they were amazed on how far she traveled and are very interseted in the details. Also a big shout out to Gino for keeping my butt motivated and sticking with it. I shot this bird in 5a.
