  1. Shooters & Hunters! So, for all'a ya'll that got drawn! This coming Saturday, 31-Jul, is the monthly hunting rifle shoot at Phoenix Rod & Gun Club! Great chance to warm up and practice for hunting, and especially warm up! This nearly monthly shoot is at animal targets from field positions at sporting distances with hunting rifles and equipment. Since it will be warm, we’ll try to set up before 7AM and get shooting shortly there-after. We’ll shoot mostly slow fire at antelope (only because I have not yet made up more whitetail targets) from the covered 300 yd firing line. We’ll dare run out under the sun and shoot a variety of deer and bear and maybe finish up with Paper Prairie Poodles. I doubt we’ll shoot more than 20 or 30 shots. I might have the Charging bear done in time, that will be a bonus. We’ll try to finish up mid morning. PRGC is 7th AVENUE south of baseline, at the foot of south mountain in Phoenix, we’ll be on the high power range. Bring the gear you’d use for hunting these kinda animals in this kinda weather. & lots of water. http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/hun...hoot-PRGC.html We’ll do this again one TBA day in sept and oct-2, then probably take November & December off to hunt, Then it will be monthly again starting in Jan. In other hunting news, AES has an elk seminar the same day and Safari club has some shoot going on at SGC. Google for them! Poole

  5. I was hunting javaelina north west of prescott 12 or so years ago and glassing a canyon, quite a ways from the nearest road, I saw a guy walking the floor of the canyon with what looked like a bag of groceries in one arm and holding a party balloon with the other hand. he disappeared from view and I have no idea where he could have been coming from or going to. most of those are southern units where there are problems getting access thru private land to get to the NF and then we have worries about leaving our truck or our camp unattended due to, well we all know what... Poole

    loose or pellets?

I thought I'd go with 777 pellets and a saboted 300gr Hornady, in my 700ML 209. but I found I was getting slight hangfires, a slight, non-consistant delay, so I went to loose powder and the brief delays went away. Javelina went away too..... never did see one.... Poole

    6.5x55 ammo

I'd not be inclined to use such light bullets as the barrels have a twist for heavy bullets and that's what makes that caliber shine. I shot my only Coues deer with a 70 featherweight in 6.5 and 140 factory winchester I usually load 140 for that round, some 160's, havent shot anything else other than water jugs if you want to load lighter rounds for varmit calling.... perhaps you now have an excuse to buy a new rifle Poole

    .270 or .280

There's a HUGE difference if you forgot to buy ammo and you're running into a small town walmart the evening before opening morning. in terms of lead hitting venison ..... no difference at all but that's coming from a guy who does not own a .280 Poole http://arizona.rifleshooting.com/

    sighting in problems

if you are shooting low when max'd out, the front of the scope is a tiny bit higher than the rear look very closely and see if there is anything causing that, I just mounted a scope with Leupold QD rings, the base has a lever with a bar thru the base held in place with a roll pin, the pin was just a tiny bit too long and that lifted the ring up a tiny bit, 1 minute with a dremel tool fixed it. but if there is a burr of metal on the receiver or the base that lifts it up higher than it should be, you are effectively (but poorly) shimming it the wrong way. if the receiver, bases or rings are out of spec and rise the scope then get a new set or shim them the other way. if you mount a scope 90 degrees offset, with the up/down knob on the left and the left right knob on the top, you get the text (and ballistic reticle) screwed up (as described by another poster) but that is sometimes done by lefties and target shooters who don't want the knob over the loading port. Target scopes often have removable knobs so you can decide which to put where, I don't think this is your issue. oh wait.... if you are off by 9" plus the 24"(half the adjustment range) you are off by nearly 3' when centered. if you divide the range (300 feet) be the ring spacing (1/2 foot) you get about 600 times as much bullet hole movement as scope base movement... I'm too tired to calculate it, so I might be off by a factor of 1000 but I thinks its about 1/16" way more than just a burr, are you sure you have the same size rings for both? are you sure the bases are really for your gun? (winchester bases on a rem?) are you sure you did not get a special 20 degree offset base that long range target shooters use? my brother once bought a gun that shot way way low, we boresighted the old fashioned way, pulled the bolt out and looked down the bore, ... the barrel was BENT! you should be able to rest in on sandbags, look at the target thru the barrel and thru the scope and line it up within inches, if it is as far off as you say and I think i just calculated you should be able to see the problem hope this helps Poole http://arizona.rifleshooting.com/ if you can't finger it out, try a different scope, different bases & rings or take it out to Derrick at Rio Salado. Where to go for good gunsmithing

its a long drive from safford, but on the grounds of Rio Salado Sportsman's Club located at Usery Pass is Accuracy Speaks http://www.accuracyspeaks.com/ I give Derrick most of my limited business, he's especially noted for competition guns. if its just refinishing the stock, it might be an enjoyable home project.
