  1. COOL!!! one of my favorite cartridges! are you able to get your eye behind that scope with that euro buttstock? My CZ550FS is in 9.3x62, and I needed to add a leather cheek piece to get my eye high enough to use the scope I put on it. Poole

We have lots of steel like this: That canyon has 8 or 10 steel targets out to 1000 yards
  3. Thanks for the great report Lance ! Landlord says they'll have that shaded platform on east range in 2 weeks, I'd predict a bit longer but it will be built. It will be about 30' x 10' I'm waiting on a calender from the landlord and feedback to see who can volunteer as RO then we'll announce the schedule of october and thru 2014. Thanks to everyone who came out. Poole
  4. This notice just sent out: Shooters! To everyone who has inquired about Cowtown Long Range Shooters! In about 11 hours our grand opening begins! Enter Cowtown (map at http://cowtownlrs.com/ ) and after paintball turn right and head towards the "east range", find somewhere to park and head down to the covered picnic area at the end to sign in. EVERYONE MUST SIGN IN READ THE SAFETY RULES AND SIGN THE WAIVER! From there, right up the hill we have the east range platform looking out at lots of steel from 100 to 1000+ yards. Once we get a range safety officer to open the gate, we'll also open up what we call platforms 2 and 3 on the "west range". Lots of steel visible from the two platforms, we have "don't shoot" regions roped off to keep a safety fan. Limited parking up there, but limited shooting spots too, so it should work out. Bring your Ear & Eye protection, (we'll have some if someone forgets), whatever water or food you need, but we'll have a cooler full of water. We will have NRA style Empty Chamber Indicators for your rifles if you don't have one, all rifles will be cased or ECI inserted except when shooting! Bring your rifle(s), ammo, shooting mat, rangefinder and similar gear, all you get from us is dirt to lay on and steel to shoot at! (and lots of each!) (Don't shoot the cactus, the burros or the yellow house!) If any of you are a Range Safety Officer interested in doing that regularly for the club, let us know when you sign in! We'll be ready before the 8AM start and stay into the afternoon as long as interest holds till 4PM. Vendors, who have signed in with Cowtown management can set up in Bay 6 before 8. See you all tomorrow! CTLRS!
  5. rifle golf inspired this. http://spiritridgeriflegolf.blogspot.com/ unfortunately getting a 6 mile walk out of it won't work on this property. but I like your suggestion lancetkenyon, come out on the 4th, lets walk thru it and start planning something! Poole
  6. LR Shooters! THANKS for all the comments! I posted the announcement on about 10 different forums and am getting a lot of comments! Some background: Cowtown Arizona, private property owned by Cowtown Management Group, has been there for decades and does a lot of cool photo shoots, movie sets and hosts lots and lots of high end contractor training for LE and DoD. They have also leased a tiny valley to a cowboy group for decades and some river bottom to a paintball operator. They were looking for someone to start a club to get long range rifle shooting going. Some Long Range hunter guys I know started talking to CTMG about forming that club and CTLRS was born. I have helped run some ASRPA (http://asrpa.com/) events out there and served on the board of several clubs so that’s how I got involved. 4-Oct is the grand opening, from that we’ll gauge interest and set up a schedule, tentatively one full weekend day per month, preferably the same weekend every month, but that might expand to several full weekends every month and maybe some weekdays (harder to schedule due to commercial usage). Depends on usage. We need volunteer RO’s and shooters filling the range to justify scheduling additional firing points and shoot days! We will have at least that one firing valley in the photo, where about 5 or 10 guys could lay down side by side and shoot, but there are 3 other similar firing points on the property and places to set up more. I picture guys shooting and spotting with a buddy till their barrels get hot, and walking back to the picnic area to cool down both shooter and barrel while others shoot a bit and doing it again till the ammo runs low. Cowtown, the landlord, owns the dirt and the steel. We won’t have to go out and set up steel, we might have to cease fire and paint the steel once or twice a day but there won’t be public range style 15-minute shooting sessions followed by target time… No personal steel, only Cowtown steel will be allowed. Just walk up, sign in, lay down and shoot! We’re not planning competitions. This is NOT a known-distance NRA/Palma/F-class firing line, all 3 ranges in phoenix have 500 to 1000 yd matches nearly every week, check out http://www.desertsharpshooters.com/ if that interests you. Nor do we plan Tactical Long Range Precision shoots, PRGC already runs some of the best such shoots in the US. http://www.phoenixrodandgun.org/ The founders are long range HUNTERS, who want a place to work with their LR elk rifles. But depending on interest of the members the direction of the club may evolve. As to the fees, the feedback is GREAT. It sounds divided between “I just joined online!” to “The numbers don’t add up” I’d strongly encourage all of you to come out to the 4-Oct event! See the facility, meet the management guys, express your opinions, volunteer to help run shoot days, etc. Like I said the direction of the club will evolve to best serve the shooters! Post or email questions, See you all on the 4th! Poole CTLRS http://cowtownlrs.com/

My sleeping bag sucks/// Which one to get

Another vote for that -35 elk hunter, I like to sleep out in the open if the sky looks clear. Up on Lemmon a few years ago woke up in the middle of the night to pee and found 2" of snow that had silently come in, didn't even notice it in that bag with just a blue tarp laid over. wayyy too warm for nice weather camping, wayyyyy to big for backpacking. http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/sportsmans/Rustic-Ridge-Elk-Hunter-35-degree-Sleeping-Bag/productDetail/Rectangular-Bags/prod9999008370/cat100842

Hunting Rifle Shoot – PRGC 30-dec-12

would you hunt with it?? this is not a competition to see if you can beat the guy on the firing point next to you, its a chance to practice your hunting rifle. If its the rifle you hunt with, its a hunting rifle! By the way there is a monthly tactical rifle match for "sniper rifle" type rifles at PRGC, 3rd saturday every month, they shoot steel mostly. and if you see "prone" or "F-class" on a schedule for Rio or PRGC that's 500 yd competition at a round bullseye paper target and u can use a rifle with big scope that has turrets. ( but the 20 shot string is hard on heating up barrels). Poole http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/

Hunting Rifle Shoot – PRGC 30-dec-12

yes and yes if you hunt with your AR-15, then its a hunting rifle. .223 is under powered for most big game (per this shoot's rules) so there is a point penatly for that... but who cares... just make sure you are squaded on opposite relays so one of you is working targets and one shooting Poole
  14. Shooters! Wasn't sure where on CWT to put this posting.... so I'll start it here... This coming Sunday, 23-Sep, PRGC will hold a “Hunting Rifle Shoot”! This is a non-competition fun shooting event for you to use your hunting rifles at hunting distances from field positions at life-sized animal targets! Details here: http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/hunting-rifle-shoot-PRGC.html We’ll try to set up at 7 and shoot 8 till about noon! I’m planning on starting at 200 yds with sighters and deer, then move back to 300, 400, 500 yds for more deer and bear, then up to 100 for Javelina and Coyotes! Bring your usual hunting gear plus eye & ear protection, a pen to write down your hits and $15 entry fee. We’ll do it again 30-Dec and then nearly monthly after that till summer. Following weekend we’ll have the Safari Rifle shoot, in case you need an excuse for a .458 Win Mag! http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/safari-rifle-shoot-PRGC.html Poole

    New Rifle

Remington M700 is made in USA, as is Kimber, Winchester M70, Ruger 77 & #1 high end weatherby, Marlin, and Savage centerfires. Browning A-Bolt and X-bolt are made in Japan, as is Howa, low end weatherby. Tikka & Sako are from Finland. CZ rifles and pistol from Czech Browning BAR is Belgium or portugal If buying American made is part of your decision. I have a Winch Model 70 in .25-06. But the proper name is .25-06 Remington, so maybe buy your first in a M700 I often buy guns for their appearance too, so if you really like the looks of the X-bolt, buy one, I may some day get one for that very reason too... 600 yard match

I just stumbled upon this post, so I'll follow up with more info with my opinion on how a shoot like this can benefit a hunter. The shoot mentioned is an NRA style high power rifle prone shoot, many of the participants shoot 5000 rounds a year from 500 to 1000 yds and have never eaten a piece of meat that did not come wrapped in cellophane. Ben avery doesn't have shade on the high power range so they take the summer off, but the prone shooters have several weekend long range shoots per month and the retired guys practice nearly every wed and thurs october thru may, see http://www.desertsharpshooters.com/ for schedule. the http://www.desertsharpshooters.com/ website as well as the 2 club websites http://www.phoenixrodandgun.org/ http://www.riosaladosportsmans.com/ will have the schedule for the 500 yd prone shoots at those 2 ranges, which will be at least once a month all year round, even in the summer. My thoughts about NRA-style shooting and applying a hunting rifle to it: The normal process is that we split into 2 relays, one group goes to the target pits and marks targets the other group shoots sighters and 20 shots, then we swap out, either every 20 shot string or just once after firing 3 strings, and the other relay shoots their strings. there will be shooters of military rifles, Match rifles with olympic style aperture sights (neither of those shooters pollute their beloved rifles with optical attachments) and "F-class" which permits scopes and bipods or sandbags. Usually big benchrest style rifles or "tactical" style rifles. if you show up with a fairly lightweight hunting rifle (they will be pleased to learn that you took off the muzzle brake and left it home, but if that is not feasible ask for a firing point on the end so you can move way way off to the side, bring another spare non-brake rifle in case they cannot accomodate that) Tell them you will shoot F-class and are new to the game and are not shooting for score. After squadding, tell the other guy on your point you may not fire all 20 shots. Better yet, 2 hunters go together and bring your own radios and get squadded on the same point. I would never fire a 20 shot string with a lightweight hunting barrel, I'd fear the thing would catch on fire or melt! I'd recommend either just shoot 5 shots, let the barrel cool and shoot 5 more during your 20 minute string, or bring 2 or more rifles to each 20-shot string (which last 20 minutes). Concentrate of position, shooting fundamentals, getting a good known-distance zero and learning to read the wind. In this way an NRA style prone/F-class shoot could be a good training technique for a hunter. Alternately, learn what you need to make up a good match or F-class rifle and take up the sport of competition shooting! Poole I also run this thing for hunters, next one is 22-May: http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/hunting-rifle-shoot-PRGC.html
  21. Shooters & Hunters! This coming saturday 23-Apr is the Hunting Rifle Shoot - hunting rifles and equipment, animal targets, realistic distances, positions and scenarios. http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/hunting-rifle-shoot-PRGC.html I am planning the stages now, if you have any suggestions let me know! We'll probably have antelope out to 400 yds, in addition to whitetail or mule deer and bear from 200 to 300 and maybe as close as 100 and coyote's at 100. Phoenix Rod & Gun Club, PRGC is at 7th AVENUE south of baseline, on the High Power Range 7am set up, 8am start or so. bring 40 rds of ammo one or several hunting rifles. eye & ear protection, water etc. $15. This is a monthly event, except we take summer and hunting season off. We'll do it again 22-may and 25-sep. Poole
  22. No age limit but obviously one must be big and mature enough to handle a rifle have never filled up and if we did we'd still squeeze a few more shooters in I did a 3 gun shoot with CF rifle (big game), clays (quail) & shotguns then rimfire rifle (rabbits). May do that again. but not this weekend. use any gear you would carry and use on a real hunting trip. Since its a standard high power rifle range, its pretty easy for members to estimate distance, if you're half way between the 200 yd and 300 yd line, its probly 250 yds.... but use the range finder if you normally do, that will give you practice handling the equipment, for instance if there is a 30 second target exposure, that's how long you have to get into position, zap the laser, put it away, get the rifle up, get on target, breath, squeeze, follow through.... to those coming, see you in about 8 hours! to everyone else, see u 22-May! T/C icon vs. Savage

I'm a few weeks late seeing this, but I REALLY like the icon and I really dislike the looks of Savage. The icon is very accurate, nice trigger, feels good, except when carrying it with a sling then that stupid bolt handle digs into the back. I usually recommend Rem 700 for a first BG rifle. Simply because they are so easy to find. Poole

    PRGC Hunting Rifle Shoot – 31-Jul 7AM

Shooters! I did not get a card turned in from Roberto! but here is everyone else's score. We shot 300 & 400 yd antelope, an assortment of deer from the mounds against the clock and as a bonus shot at the charging bear. Being a good conservative bear, he kept veering to his right, I'll have to re-design the bear buggy before next shoot. 2 guys left early and weather looked scary so we skipped the paper prairie poodles. we finished up, put the bear back in my truck and right about then the rain started coming down, I mean it POURED!!!!! I got soaked putting stuff away (good thing I was wearing a stainless revolver!) it was blocking traffic with 8" deep flooding on baseline.... got to north scottsdale it had been dry all day! So I added up the deer/'lope scores including time with a 120 sec par time and get these scores. The Bonus bear we 2 runs per person, either kill it (+20) or be eaten (-100) The most interesting quote, first time hunting rifle shooter, who's a FABULOUS 500 yd prone NRA style rifle shooter - "I learned I don't know my hunting rifle very well!"
