I thought the original post was asking if a 7-08 or a 308 was better. You guys refer to 7mag like it the only 7mm made. 7-08, 280 rem7x57 Mauser are all great and I would choose them over a 308. 7 rem mag is just an awesome long range cartridge and out classes all of them. A friend of mine absolutely loves his 7mm WSM too. 270 or 270wsm are great as well. You would do well to choose any of them. If elk is in the mix the 7 rem mag would be my choice over all of them. 7 mags recoil is nothing too, at least to me. I think a good old 270 win will do anything I need it to do though. The old more bullets available argument is moot unless you are a competition shooter constantly playing with loads. Plenty of great bullets for a 270 or 280(7mm).

el nino just keeps rollin' along-september 1-day wahoo !

Awesome. Good luck out there. If the Bigger bluefin show up, it would be nice to have a 50-60lb outfit. No Bigeye in the counts yet, but they should pop up anytime too. I've got into those 50-100lb Bigeye before. That's a blast and they are the best eating IMO. -

I'd definitely go out there with nothing less than 50 right now. :-) I have friends that have been on multiple trips recently, including a 2 day on the Outer Limits August 6,7. 1 days, 2 days, private boats. Everyone one of them has said the fish were line shy at times. If you bring 3 rods right now, I'd bring 20,30,40. 20 for your line shy bait bite. A megabait on the 30 or 40 and reserve one of the heavier rods if the bigger fish show up. The yellowfin are mostly 15-25lbs. Many of the yellowtail are rats in the 6lb range with some bigger. You can easily land any of those fish on 20 if your forced to fish it. I've heard some of the boats have found them wide open again. That's fun when you can go to the 40 and really haul them in, but don't go out there expecting it. Wish I had time to get back out there. -
Lion central for sure. Very low deer density from what I've seen, but still some deer in there,

I've done class's like that with my friends in Nor cal. Definitely an eye opener. I liked it way better than a normal gym. Wish I lived somewhere and had the work schedule to be able to add it to my routine.

Make sure you get him the companion javelina tag. My little sister in law had that junior muzzy tag a few years ago. When the only buck we saw during the hunt gave us the slip, we were able to keep her interest by shifting to the pigs. Kinda cool to be hunting the only exclusively "muzzleloader" javelina tag in the state, and in December too. Great idea, a deer or a Javi should make a JR hunter pretty happy, especially with the Muzzleloader. Pretty decent number of Javelina in the zone too.

Where do you store your tag before hunting season?

My safe. -
Sounds good. Just worked 13 hours and I'm about to go do a quick 2 mile run. No excuses, hunting season is almost here.

I used to always read labels. My problem is the 14 13 hour days in a row I work in the oilfield. Makes eating anything you can grab seem ok with the limited time, but I've got to get better at all cost. I buy very few things from the middle of the store too, except dry beans and rice. I need to get a deer this year, having fresh Venison always helps. After my recent tuna trip, I'm eating a lot of yellowfin which is good. I also eat stripers out of the river fairly often. Thanks for all the suggestions, I really need to start planning my meals better so I can bring healthier stuff to work. Not being home most of the time makes it tough.

That looks really good. Don't do desert much, but may have to try that.

Way to go. Glad an honest person found whatever the items are. Great looking out for fellow hunters.

You are way ahead of most of us I'm sure. My favorite training is trail running. Was doing it a lot for a while. I also kayak, hike and do a little weightlifting, but not enough.

Question for gun safe owners in the lower desert areas

I brought mine in the house. I didn't feel comfortable with the heat in the garage. -
Very sad. He was a great actor and very nice guy. He went out of his way to be kind and caring. You'd be hard pressed to find anything negative about the guy. I too don't agree with his politics, but I don't judge someone for having a difference of opinion with myself. I feel for the family. Depression is not anyone's fault, it takes many victims.

Got to be something metal stuck inside your target. -
Mine was a 6 liter too. Ford lost me as a future buyer on that one. I happily drive a new Tundra now.

Few pics if your interested.

I have a carbon fiber stock Browning X bolt RMEF 338 win mag. It would be an elk thumper. I would be interested in trading the binos and the 38 for it if your interested.

Best trucks ford ever made. I sold my newer one. If it was a 7.3, would have kept it. Nice rig.

Great idea. I consider hunting a physical sport, where training and fitness are a huge part of the package and enjoyment. No offense to anyone, but if my butt ever becomes glued to a 4wheeler like some out there, I will give up hunting. Boots on the ground in the quiet fresh air is what it's all about.

Nice elk for sure.
