Probably the same ones I have. Mine are the wind River Cascades. I refer to them as Leupolds since that's who made them. Think they were only $300 back when I bought them and have been very good for the money too. I'll keep on looking for there replacement. A good pair of 10s is probably the most useful thing you can have on a lot of hunts.

Sure this topics been talked about a lot, but hoping to get fresh ideas. I have some old Leupold wind rivers that need to become my back up pair. I'm looking to upgrade and hoping to spend under $500 but may go slightly higher if the value is there. After looking through them a 12x50 pair of Swaros is in my future but want to get some carry 10s or possibly 8s first.

My buddy brought out brand new Viper HDs on our hunt a week and a half back. They were sharper and had better color contrast than my old Leupolds, but I was not blown away. I looked through a pair of 12x50 Swaros recently though and everything else seems to suck! I'll have to own a pair of those someday. For now I'm still looking at various 10s, trying to decide. I have the German BL 15x56 Minox and have been playing with them on the tripod. They are very good for the money I'd say. Been looking out on the lake and over to the CA side from my house and I'm quite impressed For the price. Thanks for all the comments and opinions.

Well said. Comparing 7mm rem mag to 308 is like saying should I buy the mini van or the 1 ton diesel. It depends what your using it for. when someone says 7mm, I think of 7-08 or 280 rem. The 7 rem mag is an awesome long range high powered cartridge which is why so many custom long range rifles are build around it.

A buddy of mine routinely kills cow elk with a 243. He killed one at 600 yards with a 243, said it went right down. I don't agree with using such a light bullet, but he's a gunsmith and excellent shot. He knows his guns and what they'll do. A 270 is plenty for elk at reasonable ranges with modern powder and bullets. The argument of knock down power always cracks me up. A 458 win mag doesn't have enough knock down power if the shot is way back behind the lungs. At 400 yards a 270 with a good bullet hits with very similiar energy to a lot of "bigger" calibers.

I had a good one a few years back. Can't remember the brand or anything. It was light and easy to set up. I need to replace it so i I have that option back in my arsenal. Still have a good pack, thermorest, etc. not a fan of sleeping in the open, just in case of rain or snow. Done it plenty of times though.

Drop compensation .22 cal pellet gun
Havasuhunter replied to SwampMafia's topic in Long Range Shooting
Huge difference in pellets. Only way to do it will be too shoot at all those distances with the pellet of your choice and make a chart. Pellet guns are fun. I'm thinking of picking up a 22 or 25 cal PCP myself. -
Hornady Superformance Powder for .270 Win???
Havasuhunter replied to scoutpylot's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Wow. That is amazing performance. Almost bought a pound the other day, may have to now. I recently traded into a 270 from another member that I need to work up loads for. Thanks for the updates. -
Beautiful buck. I've seen a few in Mohave county, but not many. Congratulations

20c had good deer in it several years back. Sure there's still some in there. Good luck to everyone.

Is that like the mile high club, but in a Cessna? Just kidding. Great shooting.

Depends on the zone whether I wear it or not in states that don't require it. Some AZ zones it may be smart.

best cooler canyon or yeti
Havasuhunter replied to hunter72's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I didn't think folks where your at used coolers, just threw it in the truck bed and defrosted on the intake manifold in the morning haha!We use them to keep the beer from freezing! That's no joke. When I worked in ND I used ice chests wrapped in sleeping bags to keep my food from freezing. -
Flagstaff Duck Migration
Havasuhunter replied to bowsniper's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
None at Havasu when I left. Weather still nice and warm up here in Northern UT. WY and MT got a little snow, but nothing major. Probably need a good pacific storm before we see any migration. -
I have a ton of 30-06 loaded ammo and brass I'd like to get rid of. I'll be home Thursday, hit me up and I'll do an inventory and make you a good deal. Have to meet somewhere or figure out shipping though. I'm 3 hours from Phoenix.

Unit 33.. coming soon. Need help with getting there at night.
Havasuhunter replied to varnco's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I like red lenses a lot when walking in at night. Don't spook game as much and preserves your night vision. Nothing worse than your well meaning buddy shining a white light in your face. I fish at night, all night sometimes with a red lensed headlamp. Either on boat or walking the shore. It's a little creepy when a coyote or something sends back red reflection from its eyes. For hunting in 33, an early start is better. I had that hunt a few years ago. Lots of road and rude hunters on the early hunt. In some areas it must also be required that you never shut off your 4 wheeler for the entire hunt. We hiked a couple miles up a ridge with no vehicle access from any other side and both killed little deer. My first Coues and I killed on the last day, so I was happy with my little guy. -
Study the regs cover to cover is a good start. Then go to the game and fish web site and read about every unit, especially the mule deer info and access section. Find a unit close to you and go hike, glass, and check for sign. Narrow it down to a couple zones or areas, double check the regs to see if and when they are open for the OTC hunt, then ask some more specific questions.

260 rem vs 7mm-08 vs 243 vs ?
Havasuhunter replied to creed_az_88's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
6.5 Swedish, 6.5 creedmor or 260 rem would all be great. Can't go wrong with 7-08 either.
