Mandatory reporting is a no brainer I think. Success is going up because of better bows, better glass, etc, but nothing like rifle hunts. Guys reporting their 80 yard misses sure shows a sign of the times too. Many deer killed at that distance and many deer wounded at longer distances because guys that don't practice think they can take those shots, even though they shouldn't. I would think more big deer killed is a good sign though, obviously they are doing well, better than many think. I've been reading all the doom and gloom for years. You'd think AZ doesn't have a single big game animal left according to some posters, yet huge deer and elk continue to get killed every year.

I'm looking for a good Elk Tenderloin recipe
Havasuhunter replied to azyota's topic in Cooking Wild Foods
Um, here's a fancy one. salt, pepper, and fire. I love elk. Tenderloins are good marinaded though, since they dry out fast. -
That's a beautiful cat. Congrats.

I have the same motivation. Smallmouth bite is going to be good this year. I'm thinking spring break may be pretty good too, definitely an eye opener.

I never use a spotting scope.

Chukar Success
Havasuhunter replied to Havasuhunter's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
CA side, but they are up on the strip and a few other places in AZ. Any where from Lucerne Valley to Red mountain has Chukar in CA. The entire Eastern Sierras the whole length of the State has then as well. UT and NV have very good Chukar hunting. You are looking for giant volcanic mountains jutting up out of the desert that have Cheat grass and s water source. Often where there is desert sheep. -
Wow!

British Petroleum is after oil! Wrong BP? Just kidding. Amazing the amount of tax money that can be spent all the while making no progress on actual border security.

Should be plenty off of Tonto road. Saw good track there and what looked like great habitat the one time I went over there scouting.

So, they do exist in 18b. Congrats, great to see the kids have success.

Unit 37B Jr Hunt camp Javelina and Beginners Small Game
Havasuhunter replied to Mrs125coues's topic in Conservation Group Events
I won't have the time or I'd help. Getting back in town late tomorrow and back out Sun Otherwise I'd help for sure. Helping kids appreciate the outdoors as opposed to sitting inside playing video games or getting brainwashed by all the negative crap out there these days is as important as it gets. Good luck to everyone participating. Hope the kids can be successful and have there outdoor fires lit. When I was young, a friends dad took me rabbit hunting. I was already a fishing nut and that one trip hooked me on hunting for life.- 6 replies

The Javelina are not edible statement pisses me off almost as bad as the Pronghorn aren't edible statement. Guys in WY and MT will tell you that. I say yes, pile six of them in the back of your truck in the 90 degree weather, leave their incredibly insulating hides on and drive around all day showing them to everyone before skinning and cooling the meat and yes, they aren't edible! Pronghorn I've eaten is delicious by the way. Some of the best meat you'll ever have if cooled rapidly and carefully cleaned the same way as mentioned above for Javelina. I've even seen it with fish. Leave them in the sun or dead in 80 degree water and wonder why the meat went bad. I have no respect for so-called sportsman that don't make every effort to take care of the meat on a game animal. I love seeing people share success stories on great tasting wild game.

I would recommend not going anywhere I have in the last couple months. If you get your Buddy on a deer his first time bowhunting at the end of the season I'll be quite jealous. I wouldn't get his hopes up too much.

Strangest thing that has ever came into your call???
Havasuhunter replied to lionhunter's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
Javelina, deer, raccoons, while predator calling. For that matter, when a coyote or bocat comes in to my call, I find it wierd! While varmint and turkey calling, we've had hogs come in in CA. While turkey calling, I had a hen come in from my blind side and stare at me from inches away. I finally blinked and she turned inside out running away. Thought she was going to peck my face. we had a couple nice Toms just out of range, so she blew that spot. We headed up the ridge and pigs had been coming down. I shot a 300lb boar at 20' right between the eyes as he came at us. That was an interesting day. Those hogs check out anything sometimes since they will make anything food. -
Way to go. Nice you took the time to really do it right. I really hate when I see ignorant comments about have Javelina aren't even edible. Almost all wild game is edible when properly taken care of like you have.

Nice. Congrats on the pig. Sounds like a great hunt.

fixed blade or mechanical broad heads ?!?
Havasuhunter replied to jgraffaz's topic in Bows, arrows, broadheads
I've always wanted simple. Fixed blades are simple, legal in every state, etc. -
It seems for buckshot loads you'd jyst be better off buying a 12 gauge to make a huge array of factory loads available to you. I just don't see reloading for buckshot being worth it. Not enough round count to ever recoup your money. If your shooting trap and skeet, which of course your not going to do with a 10 gauge, then shotgun reloading is "maybe" worth it. I load 12 and 20 gauge and there really is very little savings now with lead and powder prices so high. I just like loading my own. I have MEC size masters and at one time had the cheap lee load all which worked for me when I was a kid with no money.

That's a great hunt and a lot of great meat. Lifetime memories made on a family hunt like that.

.17 Hornet for a calling rifle
Havasuhunter replied to WampusCat's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
Nice. Great write up. I've been very interested in a 17 hornet. Used to have a 22 hornet, but it did nothing a 22 mag wouldn't do for me most of the time. Those little hornet cases are fragile too and having a tiny .17 opening to work with scares me a little too. What powder are you using? Lil Gun? The pictures speak for themselves. Another thing I love about the .17s are almost zero recoil and minimal noise. Even on s 223, you get enough muzzle jump to blur the shot. With a 17 you see the impact through the scope with very little movement. Thanks again for the great write up on an interesting little caliber. -
Yes Flatlander, there is no northeastern or northwestern ID, just northern ID. It only takes a couple hours to get across if I remember right. The ID panhandle is wild country. Lots of Moose, elk, bears, deer etc. I'd like to make a trip up there again just to see that country. It has that ominous wild feel like your going to get eaten by a Grizzly at any minute. From what I've seen and heard, definitely not where I'd spend A bunch of time and money on an Elk hunt though.
