Reload accessory tips?
Havasuhunter replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I really like the Lee case trimmers that use a cordless drill. Saves a lot of time. Just always go slow to not heat up the brass and harden it while trimming. My press, most dies and other accessories are RCBS. I do have a Lyman stainless steel caliper that has worked great for years too. My tumbler is a Cabelas brand and has worked just fine. -
Shotgun patterning question

Lots of great info there. Thanks for sharing. -
Bass Pro can't afford a 1" wooden dowel to align scope rings. The problem with a lot of the sporting goods places is they have kids that mean well, but don't know what they are doing working a lot of the counters. The pay is not very high, so you are not going to have an industry expert working the counter unless you get lucky and find a guy that is semi retired doing it to pick up extra cash and pass the time. The cabelas and Scheels in Billings MT were like that. Retired guys that had a lifetime of experience and enjoyed sharing it. In the future, just mount and bore sight yourself. I can usually look through the bore with the bolt removed and have any scope a couple clicks from zeroed at 100 yards every time. Use a 1" wooden dowel to align your rings.

That's the hot way to break in right now for the dirt bag criminals out there. I put a cross bolt lock on mine. It's now easier to break into my house than the garage. I wish all thieves that steal from hard working people die a painful death by Cholla cactus.

I have several good friends in Nor Cal so I go every year. I buy a license every year because I'm gaining sheep, pronghorn and Tule Elk points there plus I hunt chukar across the border in The Mojave National Preserve. I'd be up for a black tail specific hunt one of these days. I also have access to private land where we hunt pigs.
-
I drew a late season hunt in Nor Cal. It's an easy hunt to draw, but I'm still amazed with my luck. If we get weather it's a great hunt, if not it's tough. I'm just excited that I get to hunt with the rifle this year.

I've killed several blacktail, but will keep that in mind. I would like to get a good blacktail someday. A backpack hunt chasing them would be a lot of fun.

Time for a new tuck Diesel or Gas
Havasuhunter replied to AZBUCKEYE's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Bought my Tundra in MT. It's not a crew max, but the 4 door with regular sized bed. Most dealers in MT don't even have 2WD trucks on their lot, so they don't act like a 4WD truck is some special order item with a huge extra premium like they do in AZ and CA.As said said above. If pulling something heavy a lot, get a diesel and a 3/4 or 1 ton chassis. For occasionally pulling a small trailer or bass boat sized boat, you will gain no advantage over a half ton IMO. I've driven all over the country, in all terrain and climates in a wide variety of vehicles and stand by that statement. -
If you get the chance to hunt Namibia... you won't regret it

Wow. Dream trip for sure. Tiger fish is on the bucket list, not to mention the hunting and scenery. Just amazing. Thanks for sharing. -
Shotgun patterning question
Havasuhunter replied to slopoke36's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Pattering is most important for Turkeys and waterfowl. With steel shot for waterfowl an improved cyl tube can actually be tighter than a full choke tube because of the way steel shot reacts going thru it. You have to pattern just to know what choke tube to use with a specific load. With lead shot and upland hunting, I just changed tubes, depending of the situation and observe my results. You'll be amazed how an upland load at 1300 FPS patterns great and one at 1400 FPS flies all over the place. When I reloaded for trap, I'd increase the speed until my pattern blew out, then back it off until it cleaned up. All wishin safe limits of course. We shot various games and a little extra speed, shortening your lead was important, but not as important as a consistent pattern. -

Unless you are pulling a lot of weight, a lot of the time, check out the Tundras with the 5.7 motor and 6 speed auto transmission. They are not as fancy on the interior as some of the others, but a rock solid truck with all kinds of power. I tow boats and small trailers here and there, but can't justify another diesel. They are nice, but 15-20k buys you a lot of gas, which is the jump up to any new diesel. I paid $33k for my 4wd Tundra, way less than any diesel. For 6k you can put the TRD super charger on them too and have 600 HP. Hate to think what the towing mileage would be though? Ouch! I know there are guys that just can't buy a Toyota for whatever reason, but Tundras are as American made as any brand out there. Made in the great state of Texas. As far as Toyota truck being overbuilt and solid? Anyone that questions that, is just plain uneducated. If you go Diesel, it's hard to beat the Dodge. Cummins motors are amazing, not sure I could trust what ford or Chevy has to offer when dishing out 50k +. My family has always been ford people, but I had a 6liter power stroke and that will forever have me pissed off at ford. My cousin had 2 of the Chevy diesels with the Allison tranny. Nice trucks but he had a lot of stupid little problems you shouldn't have on a vehicle you paid 60 K for. -
I'm about to run out on the lake myself right now. It's really hot and a bit humid. Feeling like frog weather.

If you come thru Havasu, I could hook you up. I have a good spinning outfit I'll sell. I have other outfits to loan. You may want to be prepared for more than just Yellowtail in mid July. This season is looking good.

I have the 7.5" barrel super RedHawk. Probably my favorite gun. Post some pics and stats and that thing should sell fast.

I just got back from working in CO. Luckily you missed the rain and hail we had almost daily for the last 6 weeks. Beautiful state. I saw a lot of deer, pronghorn and elk and caught several species of fish. A sportsmans paradise for sure.

Look at any water hole in AZ, you'll find quite the selection.

It's sad, but I'm betting there are a lot more people out there that are just as dumb. Unfortunately they vote too.

That's awesome. 23 lbs in 2 months is really good.

Whoa, that's quick. I haven't done 6 minute miles in a long time. Best recently is 7 minute mile pace for up to 4 miles. I put about 10 miles in with a pack, Binos and fishing gear at 10,000' here in Colorado this weekend. Heading home this week, figured I better take advantage of the altitude and temperatures before I go. Caught some nice trout too.

My 2015 archery coues takin at 110yrds
Havasuhunter replied to azhamill's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Very nice buck. I'm with the too far with a bow group on this one though. It's not really the distance of the shot for me, it's the time it takes for the arrow to travel that distance. I know guys get a big woody when they chrono there bow well over 300fps, but that is still very slow compared to how far a deer can move while the arrow is in flight, how a slight gust of wind can affect an arrow, etc. second shot on a wounded animal at that distance is fine, first shot is irresponsible. I've hunted with several guys that swear how good they are at long range archery. Seen them miss completely at 70 -100 yards and unfortunately wound several deer. -
It's the G1 tag, late season in C4 I believe. Once you draw the tag, you then draw for access which can be key to success. Hunt has a 35% success rate and some really good deer get killed if the migration works out right. After day 3, it's a meat hunt for me. An excuse to go hang out with my friends up there and hopefully bring some meat home. Bad thing about the hunt is it's impossible to scout. Being a migration hunt, there are literarily no bucks there during the summer.Ever hunted the trinity alps? Its big enough that I have a hard time thinking you cant find some solitude even though I know it gets hit pretty hard by the cali bt hunters. I corresponded with a guy from Jesse's hunting forum a few years ago that said once you get past 5 miles, you're pretty much alone. He shot a huge one in there.I fished the Tinity Alps one year. Great fishing in several lakes and got skunked on Stealhead in the Trinity River. Did hook a jack salmon that jumped off and several Browns. Beautiful country, plenty of weird mountain hippies up there like every other place in CA though.

Why do police have militarized specialty units??
Havasuhunter replied to Curtis Reed's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
North Hollywood is a great example. The fact our government does little against the Cartels is another good reason. Localized response to a terrorist attack is another. The mentality of some that our police officers should carry less fire power than the average criminal pisses me off big time. -

Dove is very good if the meat is taken care of. I like to slice the breasts and make fajitas. -

If pulling a lot of weight, Diesel, if not gas motor all the way.
