I believe that Research Manikins does the Faux Velvet in three different colors. I don't see it online but I remember it being in their catalog. Give them a call. Just Google them.

I have the 713 also and love it. The 614 is a 4 section tripod and a bit smaller diameter legs than the 713 or 714. It would be great for backpacking for 8's and 10's. It would be a little light for 15's. The 713 handles the 15's well. I've had mine for years with no problems. I like the leg adjustments. The are concentric with the legs and make for a streamline tripod. B and H photo have them for around $230.00.

Nice Cat Josh! Dan does, without a doubt, the best lion mounts around. He makes them look so real. I think lions are one of the most difficult animals to mount good. I've just seen way too many look so fake. Dan's ALWAYS look great. He does a GREAT Coues deer also!!!

December Hunts are always my first choice for many of the reasons all ready stated. I always see a ton of deer and enjoy the low hunter density. One other reason I like the December hunt is that the days are really short so you can hunt all day and still get a great nights sleep. My Avatar buck was taken in December but I've taken a couple nice deer in the early hunts also. As long as I have a tag in hand I'm a happy camper. One other twist on this would be what a friend of mine did one year. He had a monster located that was in the same spot everytime he went to scout. In this case, he put in for the early hunt first so he'd be the first one to have a shot at him. He drew the early tag and took the best buck of his life. It just all depends. But I'd say most people, as Amanda's data shows, like the later hunts best. And don't count out the deer as not being in the run during these hunts either. I've seen many deer in full rut in December, allthough it usually is better in early/mid January. Good luck hunting this year!!!

My Avatar Buck at 114" is my personal best rifle coues. 20 inch main beams on both sides. We saw this buck about 15 times on the same hill side before opening day. Talk about habitual!!! Good luck to everyone finding their personal best this year!!!! Oh yeah!!! Not sure I'll ever top this one.

My Sons First Outing With His 10/22
cpugsie replied to cpugsie's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
When ever time permits we will be out there again! Vin had a great time just plinking. Good shot for his first time shooting. The stock is still a bit long for him. I think I'll cut it down for him!!! Just kidding! I purchased this 10/22 at Kmart about 15 years ago. I wasn't even looking to purchase a gun that day but the stock caught my eye on this display model. I told the old lady behind the counter that I wanted to purchase that gun. She said she had to get one from the back of the store and before I could say anything else she took off to the back. When she came out all she had was an empty box and said there were none left in the back and she would have to sell me the display model. Sound good to me I'm thinking. Then she goes back to the back of the store and comes out after about 10 minutes and says she can't sell the gun because there is no clip with it. Well, at this point I've decided I'm not leaving the store without this rifle. I ask her if she has any clips for sale. She says yes but she can't just put one in the box. So I purchase a clip for 8 bucks or so and give it to her to put in the box. She finally decides she can sell it to me. I even went back later in the week to get a few bucks back cause it went on sale two days later. $129.00. I wrote Ruger and told them my gun didn't have a clip and they sent a new one. I just gave the gun to my son last year. I'm not sure he knows what he has there quite yet. I'm actually thinking of getting another stock for it until he can take care of it a little better. Thanks for the compliments!!! -

Congratulations Mike!! You deserve it. You're the most dedicated coues hunter I know!!! You put in the time both in the field and getting your equipment dialed in. You've set the bar pretty high but if any one can best this deer it will be you. What a beautiful buck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck!!! Carl

I've heard that human pee does not scare away deer and that some people do just as you mentioned by peeing in mock scapes and from the tree stand. I've hunted from trees sinced the 1979 and out of habbit just never peed from my stand. That is until one day in Montana when I just couldn't hold it any more. Your right, it didn't seem to bother the deer that came buy my stand later that morning. Some old habbits are hard to break. One more thing to check is that your stand is DEAD SILENT. No squeaks AT ALL when shifting your weight. A squeaky stand is a deal breaker every time. Mark, Thanks for the kind comment!!

Don't cut sapplings at an angle, 12" from the ground right under your stand. Take a pee before you get in your stand. Take some snacks up with you. Dont' leave too much scent around the tree or on near by trails. Wear rubber foot ware to keep your scent down. Where some kind of scent blocker clothing and take a shower as much as possible. This is one place I feel that scent control is most important. Do not climb the tree with your bow in hand. Bring a rope to pull your bow and pack up to your stand. ALWAYS WEAR A HARNESS. If your stand is far from where you park, hike to your stand with an extra pair of clothes or just wear the basics to keep from getting all heated up. In extream cold, bring some hand warmers and feet warmers with you. Cold extreminties will end your hunt quickly. Some bring a pee bottle up in the stand with them. Continually look around 360 degrees slowly. Even though your up in a tree keep movement slow and to a minimum. Try to hold your bow ready as much as possible. I like to attach my bow quiver to the tree to leave my bow lighter and more manuverable. Walk off known distances and mark with something natural (wood, cowpie,...whatevers around). Bring a small saw and/or pruning shears to clear shooting lanes. Try to do this before the season opens or you plan to hunt the stand. Bring some little screw in hooks or extra tree steps to hang your bow and pack from. And include what everyone else all ready said. I love tree stand hunting!!! All the deer I've ever taken with a bow have been from a tree.

Is a guided hunt as satisfying as do-it yourself?
cpugsie replied to lousyhunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
The land my guide has access to in Montana does not block access to any public land what so ever. I do agree that it sucks when this happens but I didn't think this thread was about that. Every few years me and 3 or 4 of my friends go on aguided hunt to Montana and have a blast. I agree that it's not the same as a DIY hunt but after several DIY's it's nice to have some one else do some of the work once in a while. On a DIY it's much more intences on many levels. The guided hunt lets you focus more on the hunt itself. If you have a good guide and see alot of game with oppourtunities you will definately have a good/memorable experiences with satisfaction of taking your animal. remember you still have to do your part. I'm assuming that this is all fair chase and NOT a high fences situation. -

I love guided hunts when I can afford them. I've been to Montana 7 or 8 times for whitetails on guided hunts over the past 20 years. Where we go you will have more oppourtunities in one day than you can get in a life timeof hunting whitetails here in AZ. I love being in a stand with tons of deer around. The guide has access to private land where no one will screw it up for you and he also places the stands in the most likely spots. You still have to make the shot, be quiet, don't move too much, keep your scent down, keep your sh!t together when the moment of truth comes and generally know how to shoot your bow and when to draw. You thing just because you go on a guided hunt its easy??? Not always. I've come home from this paradise more than once with only memories. I'd go on guided hunts all the time if I had the money. I don't always have time to scout with young kids and a wife at home. It's great when someone can do some of the leg work for you. It's still fare chase and gets my heart pumping just like any other hunt. I like to hunt so much that it realy doesn't matter to me when I get an easy hunt once in a while. I work hard no matter where I hunt and never go home disappointed weather I kill or not. To each their own. Happy hunting!!!
