  1. As promised! Here's over 460 inches of coues whitetail from one family! Congratulations Adam, Jason, Mark and Ron and of course super jumbo himself, "Dave" WOW!!! 109+" 112+ 115+ 124+ Group Photo!
  2. Welcome aboard "superjumbo". I knew it would only be a matter of minutes before someone wants to see your pics! You can't go posting around here with big numbers like you mentioned without photos!!! It's cause for a pile on! LOL! I can tell everyone that you will see the pics as soon as they are sent to me. These guys know coues and how to hunt them. I wouldn't say that they are lucky at all...(we'll maybe a little) but they just spend more time in field year around than anyone I know. Scouting scouting scouting and more scouting. That's how they get it done. Welcome aboard Dave! By the way, the buck in my avatar is a direct result of Dave and his brothers scouting! That's Dave's arm holding up my bucks head. Thanks guys.

    Vin's 1st Deer!!!

I arrived in our hunt unit on Monday morning, 4 days prior to the Junior hunt. Even though there was a lot of rain most of it actually missed my camp spot. WOW! I think they had it much worse in the valley. Not much activity until Wednesday evening when I spotted a great 4 x 4 muley still in velvet. Finally a buck! Thursday morning I glassed up 3 whitetail bucks with one being a nice 5 x 5 (counting brow tines) that I'd put right around 100" with two reasonable 3 x 3 's (counting brow tines). My son Vinnie arrived with his friend Justin and Justin's dad around 1:30 Thursday afternoon. We went out for one last scout before the hunt and glassed up one more smallish muley buck that evening. After showing them some video of the bucks I had previously seen Vinnie asked who would hunt where? Bob (Justins dad) respectfully said that since I'd done all the pre scouting that we should have the first choice on where we wanted to go. Vin and I discussed the two possible locations and he chose to go after the whitetails. YES! Even though the muley was a great buck to go for there where more possibilities going after the whitetails with one of the bucks being a great buck for any hunter. And the fact that they were WHITETAILS!!! Opening morning was uneventfull until 10:00 am when I spotted our first deer in the shadows. Not until he stepped out into the sun could I tell it was a buck. I told Vin that I had a buck in the binos and let him take a look. One look and he simply said "lets go". It was one of the 3x3's I'd seen the morning before. We packed things up and headed down the hill for the stalk. The wind was in our face and the sun high enough not to be a problem. We simply stayed on the opposite side of the ridge we were on until we possitioned ourselves directly across from the now bedded buck 153 yards away. I readied my tripod with a rifle rest attachment and pointed out where the deer was to Vin. I said that it was the grey spot in the shaddow of the trees across the canyon. His first shot the deer stood up. His second shot put him down for good. He actually hit him both times. Vin did a great job being quiet during the stalk, acquiring the deer in the scope all on his own, helping with removing the meat and cape from the buck and packing him out. I couldn't have been a prouder dad!!! These junior hunts are great in that they limit the number of people hunting which makes for a great hunting expierence. Nice job Game and Fish!!

    Vin's 1st Deer!!!

Justin and Bob went on several stalks (including one for a giant muley) and had a great hunt! They did not connect with a deer this year. However, Justins attitude was great and he hiked his butt off trying to make it happen. We sat both kids down before the hunt and went over several possible outcomes of the hunt. We said that no matter which scenario takes place that they should be happy for the other guy no matter what. Here's what we told them: 1) Both of you might not get a deer 2) Both of you might get deer of similar size 3) Both of you might get deer but one will be bigger 4) Only one of you might get a deer Both kids had a great time as well as us dads!

    Camo on a rifle hunt?

As allready said, the camo isn't really needed to be successful. However, I'll often were my lightweight camo Scentblocker pants and tops (long sleeve tee and fleece jacket when needed) to try and keep my scent down and also be less visable to other hunters. I carry a light weight orange vest I put on once I get something on the ground. Especially if I'm packing out the head hangin out of my back pack. Always be aware of wind direction, even with scent control clothing. Their nose will get you more than just about anything else. Good luck and welcome to the forum!!!
  9. Brian, That is one awesome buck! As allready said, that 23 rifle tag of your's was definately Not Wasted! Some young kid is going to have a great hunt to boot!!! A definate Win Win!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

    Quiet AND Waterproof camo

The rain gear I presently use if MT050 from Cabelas. I know it's expensive but it's relatively quiet and definately is very water proof. Most of the time, "You get what you pay for". I love my rain gear, never let me down yet!!

    Tree Stand Hunting

Bring a rope to haul up your bow and gear. I also like to attach my quiver to the tree and get it off my bow. Quickie Quivers makes an adapter you can screw into the tree. If you'd like to video your hunt Gorilla makes a real affordable video camera adapter that works pretty good for the money. A light that attaches to your head is nice when your climbing up to your stand in the dark. I bring a closed cell foam pad for my butt and attach it to the seat with large rubber bands. Some of my tree stands have hard seats. Saftey harness is a must as well as many other things all ready mentioned. Good luck!
  12. Some good advice so far. If you're going to hang your cheese cloth type game bags anywhere outside of your pack you should pepper it down. Blow flies can get right through the holes in cheese cloth bags. Pepper will help keep blow flies off the meet and from laying eggs on your meet. This happens really fast in the heat.

    question about tripods

I'm sure that the rating is at full extension. If you are going to have it fully extended you certainly will have some flexing going on. However, if you will be sitting down you should be fine. IMHO The Slik Carbon fiber tripods are the best value in lightweight tripods on the market today. I have the 713 pro and absolutely love it. I shoot off of it all the time. Even at full extention. You'd probably be more stable with the 613 since it has 3 legs verses 4 legs on the 614.

    bow hunter happening

My son and I had a great time despite the rain! We were there on Saturday and just waited out the rain. I was amazed at how many bow hunters DID NOT have their rain gear with them!!! What were you guys and gals thinking??? Amanda, It was nice to finally meet you. I wish I had more time to chat!! Carl

    advice on a range finder

I second the Nikon 550. Great range finder for the money. Last year I was hunting with two guys that both had the newest Leica range finders. The trouble was that we were ranging deer on a severe angle and both of these guys kept asking me what my range finder was reading because I had the angle compensation. The range was quite different at just under 300 Yards. Leica now makes the 1600 with angle compensation, so I will be saving my $$$ for a new Leica as soon as I can aford one.

    120+ New Mexico Set

Beautiful Mount and a great story!!! Dan Lee does the best coues deer mounts period. I saw his work years ago at one of those outdoor expos. I wasn't that into hunting coues yet but couldn't stop staring at and coming back to these particular coues deer mounts. They looked life like and were absolutely stunning. I remember Ken Rowe's name but didn't remember Dan's name on the business card. Fast forward several years...I met Dan at the sheep banquet in 2000. He had some of his work there and we talked it up for quite some time. We figured out we had a couple mutual friends and he mentioned he use to work with Ken Rowe. I've seen alot of his work since then and am just amazed at his artistry. I recently found that business card in a box not too long ago and there was Dan's name on the card also. You get what you pay for!

    Application Anxiety

I NEVER WANT TO SEE ON LINE APPS AGAIN!!! I want to hunt. If more people apply I have less chance to do so. I know how to write correctly and know where the post office is as well as the Game and Fish. YES, it takes more time by hand but if that means that my odds go up substantially of getting a tag then lets make it even harder to apply. And yes, I also get almost twice as many envelopes that I need because I make sure everyone of them is neat and legible with no mistakes. I fill out 4 separate applications for each species. I haven't been rejected because of a mistake in 25 years. Just my 2 cents worth!

    odd question

Just have the magazine sent to your house for a lot less than news stand prices. http://www.bowandarrowhunting.com/ Sorry I can't tell you where to get the magazine locally. I live in Chandler. I get the magazine sent to my house and think it's the best Bow and Arrow mag out there. Good luck!

    buying new bow imput please

To be honest, if you ask 10 guys "Whats the best bow to buy" you're likey to get more than 10 answers. Just look at the previous posts. Try every bow in your price range and then try the ones above your price range to figure out what you like best and if the extra money is worth it to you. Year to year the "best bow" will most likely be from different manufacturers simple because they are always changing features. I have access to just about all bows made and have shot PSE's, Bowtechs, Ross, Mathews, Bear, Jennings, Hoyt, Darton etc.etc... I have found great bows from all these manufactures from one year to another. I'm currently shooting the Reezen 6.5. This bow is lightning fast and shoots very forgiving for a 6.5" brace height. You can also get this bow in a 7" brace height. I didn't care for the draw cycle as well on the 7" so after shooting them both I went with the one that felt better to me. It just happended to be the faster one. You can get a bit faster bow than the Reezen but IMHO you start to get into a harder bow to shoot. Try them all and let us know what you walk away with.
