Precautions in southern units
Snapshot replied to NativeRat's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
The main concern, besides personal safety, is keeping your camp secure. It is not just illegals in the southern units that will ransack a camp. The illegals mostly want food or water. I have heard that some people will leave some water and food outside for them, maybe that keeps them from entering a tent or...?. Keep any valuables locked in your vehicle. If you see anyone carrying burlap or large packs, don't even let them see you. Just contact the border patrol and give them GPS location if possible. -
Grong, Please don't take offense to the "army of guides" comment. It was not directed towards you or any of the other respected guides or outfitters. The comment was based on what we have seen with some outfits, one of which is in AZ and the other famous one is based in Utah/Nevada who does guide high dollar clients with the army of guides and radio technique. If the client or outfitter chooses to hunt that way that is their business, the client is paying big money and if they want the red carpet rolled out to within shooting range of that trophy buck or bull so be it. Even if I was a millionaire, I would never hunt that way, but that is just me, I like things one on one. Everyone draws there own line in the sand as to what hunting methods are exceptable or not. The point being, that with the advancement of technology in hunting aids and a society of hunters looking for instant gratification without the hard work and or sacrifice that was used in years past to harvest an animal, I guess it is inevitable progress. I remember the day that all I carried was a canteen, a knife, and maybe a sandwhich. Now my day pack is loaded with so much crap that my shoulders hurt at the end of the day. I have been a guide and I have been guided(once), and I have seen things from both sides of the fence.

Because of a hand injury I was not going to bowhunt, but the hand is getting a little better. However, since I drew a tag I have been waiting to get for 5 years, I don't want to bowhunt and be tempted to shoot one and forfeit my rifle tag . I am going up over labor day and will have a bear, lion, turkey tag in pocket.

lonely pop-trailers on National Forest land
Snapshot replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
It does not make a difference to me. What someone does with their trailer/tent is their business and not mine. -

Great pics. Sounds like a great time, and a nice river to canoe on. -

No matter how bad I wanted a spot, I would never leave my trailer sitting around because of all the thieves and vandals that seem so numerous these days. -

What I have seen in the past is guys bring their trailers and set them up early to "stake their claim" to spots they like. some even do it weeks ahead of time, especially in areas of limited camp spots or access. I think you are allowed to camp for 14 days before you have to move, but I am not sure if it applies to unattended campers, you would think it would? I wonder what stance the FS takes on this? -
Digiscoping is a pretty neat deal. I would like to do it out in the field, I just have second thoughts, as my daypack is already overloaded and gets to be a real burden at the end of the day How much do you think your setup weighs? Just curious.

The scale has been sold.

Good points on those GPS. I have been looking into the Garmin Colorado also. I have an old Garmin 40 and it is o.k but am looking to upgrade with all the topo features. I

That works the best, either a blow dryer or heat gun. Just be careful on carbon arrows, blow the heat into the end and not the sides if possible.

I certainly don't think the use of radios is unethical, like I mentioned earlier, radios are a great tool. Maybe this thread has lost a little in translation to the fact that it was started because of the implication that some hunters only score big animals by the use of radio communication???. There is a big difference between a couple of buddies with radios versus a whole army of guys using radios. My Dad and I both had radios so that I could keep track of him, but since he passed away, I no longer use them because I hunt by myself 99.99% of the time, even though I carry one for emergency use. I think maybe Redbeard's point is that technology has bred lazy hunters in a sense that maybe some of their actions maybe construed as unethical in the sense of "the purity" of hunting in general. Trail cams, laser range finders, radios, gps, foodplots, feeders, salt licks and all the other gadgets that take make it easier to bag game. Are these things illegal or unethical? Certainly not as long as they are used within the boundaries of the law. If I hire an outfitter and a crew of 20 guys with radios and gps to search the hunt unit from top to bottom and radio back to me the location of that trophy buck or bull, is that illegal or unethical? Cetainly not illegal (unless state laws prevail), but ethics are up to the individual as what they perceive as being right or wrong. In 2006 I helped out my wife's uncle and cousin on a hunt in 35B. They are kind of lazy when it comes to hunting, so I stayed on the mountain too glass until dark. I spotted two decent bucks across a deep canyon, I radioed back to them that I found something and to come take a look. The next morning we hiked across the canyon and he shot one of those bucks. Does that make me or anyone else that does stuff like that "unethical" ? We still had to work very hard to get that deer. Could Randy Ulmer have taken that deer without radios? I am sure he could. If he doesn't care about putting it in the record book then it shows that he hunts for more than just an entry into a book, and that he just wants to get the biggest animal he can each and every year, and to me that says he is just competing with himself and thats what it is all about.

Thats funny I admit I am a little "old school" at times, I think a loin cloth and a spear would take me back to my roots.
