    Hunting Coues on Horseback

Yep. Lots of boot leather and buckets of sweat in that country.

    Trout Fishing

Nice fish! In a few weeks I will be hitting the rivers pretty hard here in Montana. Then we get snowmelt and runoff which turns the water to chocalate milk for awhile.

    Hunting Coues on Horseback

I am not certain about the details of that shooting. Just going by what the outfitter told me? He made it sound like it was in the area I was hunting. We got to talking about an area I was In, and he said "your hunting down by deadmans", then he went into the story?

    Hunting Coues on Horseback

Bill, About 10 or 15 years ago my pal, Bill and I road off the rim on our mules and right into what I think may have been Saunders Cabin. There was a smelly green bear hide there and as I remember no evidence that the cabin was being taken care of. I was thinking about hunting 10 miles east of Strayhorse, south of Bear Mountain, but you think west of Strayhorse may be a better bet? Hope you're doing well. Rollin Adams Gilbert, AZ Don't know what it would be like now. It was more than 25 years ago that I was in there, and although there was a big fire right after that, I would guess that everything has grown back thicker than ever. Whitetails and mule deer were running together in those days. If I were to go back again with horses and mules, I'd start at Strayhorse and work west to about Baldy Bill, glassing the ridges and canyons between Chitty Creek and McBride Canyons as I went. Like I said, though, it's been a quarter century since I was there and it could be too thick to hunt now. I never went east of Strayhorse, but it should be good, too. Bill Quimby Bill, I confused Saunders cabin with Sawmill cabin. I have never been to Saunders, but in 2005 I was down by Sawmill which I accessed using the Sheep Saddle trail down into Hot air/east eagle creek. One of the canyons up by Sheep Saddle is where the incident with the guide being killed took place.

    Hunting Coues on Horseback

Thanks for getting back with me and the photos and info. I don't know the 27 rim country very well at all. I've been on the rim east of Strayhorse and out towards the NM border, but wasn't thinking Coues at the time. A couple of guys have talked about hunting west of Strayhorse and I rode into the Saunders Cabin once, but I remember it being one-thick bugger, hard to hunt. Anyway, that eastern country towards NM seems to be calling out to me. I'm thinking of checking it out again. I have not hunted that country south of Bear Mountain on the east side of the Blue, I did take a bear on the northwest area of Bear Mtn. It is good looking country, and I bet you would never see another hunter back in there. Even though the whitetail population in 27 is increasing, it can be spotty. The south /central part of the unit is probably best for numbers. I am sure there are big bucks in there that have never seen a hunter, and die of old age, if they don't get eaten by lion first.

Remington 700 CDL in .300 RUM

Thanks for the info. I have hunted with Remington rifles all my life. I am looking to possibly get a new one late this summer. Something with more "oomph" than my old 30-06. Either a .300 RUM or .300 WSM ? There is a place up here called Shedhorn sports in Ennis,Mt. It is famous around the west as a gun store/sporting goods. Great prices and over 1300 guns in stock. They are having a big expo on August 20-21 at shedhorn, and I hope to be there with cash in hand for a good deal.
  8. I was wondering if anyone owns a Remington 700 CDL in .300 Ultra mag, and what you think about the gun in general? Thanks!

    Hunting Coues on Horseback

Bill, I have hunted(hiked) in that area in 2005. Its a good area. An outfitter I know told me that a hunter that was hunting with another outfitter, shot a Bull elk that dropped off into a steep canyon. The two guides went down to retrieve it and the hunter who was above them on the ridge was looking at them through the rifle scope and accidentally pulled the trigger. That particular spot is now nicknamed "deadman's canyon" A pretty sad deal. You are right about the bear. I saw more bear scat in that area, then anywhere I have ever been in the unit.

    Hunting Coues on Horseback

There are alot of Coues along the rim in 27. The Hi-Line trail going west from Strayhorse campground is a good trail, but it is very thick in there, and not as easy for glassing up deer. The Sardine trail, and some others further south will take you in aways. Decent Coues country. The Red Mountain trail will get you into good country, all the way to the Blue.

If you hunt down in the southern units, you will find much worse things than a snickers wrapper...........just sayin!

    Africa With a Muzzleloader 2012

This is from Africanhunting.com Black Powder and Cap supplies in South Africa As a manufacturer of muzzleloaders we generally always have a supply of BLACK POWDER FFFg, FFg and 1 1/2 Fg by WANO and or SWISS, we do not get PYRODEX, 777 etc in South Africa as our market is just too small. In addition to this we also have caps in #10, #11, #11 MAGNUM and Musket Caps as well as a selection of flints in stock. If there are any hunters passing through Johannesburg we can probably put together a parcel of what they would like and need given a bit of notice. Late unit 27 Bull

It can be crowded in areas closer to the roads and along horse trails, especially on top of the rim. My last rifle hunt up there, I only came across 3 people while hunting, and they were with an outfitter riding horses on the trail. I did not see anyone else in the hills or canyons I was hunting. The big one got away, but if you get a couple miles off the beaten track, the crowds will dissapear quickly.
  17. Since I Qualify for a Montana resident hunting license. I can get a Sportsmans license which includes all of the following: Conservation license General hunting and fishing license General deer, elk, and bear permits. Small and upland game (excluding turkey) All for $85.00 That is cheap! A non-resident general deer/elk license increased to $912.00........ouch!

    $$$ For Sheds???

From what I saw on the internet, it is the buyers and collectors selling elk antlers from $10-14 a pound. Much more for unique or trophy size antlers. But I guess most buyers are only paying $5-6 dollars a pound on average. A local guy I know here in Montana, said the average price was $10 a pound for quite awhile, I am not sure about current price.

    $$$ For Sheds???

I think the average is around $10 per pound If you're getting $10 per pound I want to meet your buyer! I haven't seen prices like that for many, many years. The guys up this way have been giving $6 bucks a pound (unbroken browns) pretty steadily for a few yrs now. I don't know much about shed prices. Just what I heard in other areas on the internet? I will see if I can find that link?

    Late unit 27 Bull

Chimichanga, That is a great bull. I know exactly how much work was put into getting that bull down, and packed out. I have put hundreds of miles on the boots in that unit, hiking, hunting, and packing out mostly deer and bear. I did not score on my last elk hunt there, but I will try again someday. Congratulations on a fantastic bull.

Awesome! Are those holdover fish? It has been along time since I fished there last, but I remember catching my limit on a black Wooly Bugger.
